Today’s episode of Greatest Games features one of the most significant games in the history of European football: the 1974 World Cup final between West Germany and the Netherlands. We’re joined by author and journalist David Winner, the author of ‘Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football’ and former biographer of Dennis Bergkamp, to recount the arrival of Johan Cruyff and Total Football on the world stage. With no real previous World Cup pedigree, the Netherlands arrived at the final in Munich having played some truly astounding football. They topped their group and beat East Germany, Argentina and Brazil on their way to the final whilst conceding only one goal. David joins us to explore the build up to the game and the ‘tragic’ outcome of the match, as we dispel some of the the myths that surround the Dutch perceptions of this game. Fancy getting in touch? The U17 World Cup starts on Oct. 26 in Brazil, the U.S. has a tough group consisting of the Netherlands, Japan and Senegal and the roster should be released any day now. Scuffed regular Matt Hartman joins the pod to talk about who will likely get called up and who will likely be left off. We each give our preferred roster, nodding regularly to what we think we can probably expect from coach Raphael Wicky.
In our regular Monday show, People's Poll, we asked which struggling Premier League team you'd like us to focus on - and the winner was Manchester United. Fresh off the back of a defeat at the London Stadium to West Ham and real cracks in the playing squad, things don't look like they are harmonious at Old Trafford. We look at who's to blame, whether Ole is the right man to move the club forward, and what areas of the playing squad ned improvement as well as a realistic analysis of where the team will finish this season. _________________________________________ You can find more from the Planet #FPL Team here: Web: www.planetfpl.com Twitter: @PlanetFPLPod (James) / @sujanshah (Suj) Facebook: www.facebook.com/PlanetFPL Instagram: @planetfpl Learn more about your ad choices.
