Write off: Germany crash out, Brazil get it done, England are up…

Woo hoo! It turns out that very, very occasionally you can write off the Germans, and we at the Football Ramble are happy to embrace this opportunity mere hours before they play FIFA's third-ranked team. Hubris. Mitro's on Newcastle United form rather than Fulham's – basically on the wrong kind of fire. Brazil showed their cupboard of pristine cogs and gears to the world, and Marcus doesn't want to talk about Felipe Baloy. German Genie: Argentina scrape through, Peru get their win and Iceland say goodbye

The dynamic player-management duo of Lionel Messi and a bleedy Javier Mascherano saw Argentina through the group after a scare. Was it ever in doubt? Yes. Yes it was. Alongside this there’s gushing over Croatia, scorn for France and Denmark as they provide the tournament’s first 0-0, and some odd chat about bones. Also, Luke writes off the Germans again, which is probably as close to a spoiler as you can get in a World Cup. Get involved, you Squares. The Iran-Rontra Affair: Drama in Group B, consolation for Saudi Arabia and a wake up call for Russia

We’re back to mash buttons, chat bitrates and harness the power of sexiness! Group B ended in chaotic fashion and we look back on it with fond memories. Farewell, old friend. Glancing further around the tourney we feel for poor Mo Salah, postulate on the merits of Argentina using Lionel Messi as an impact sub in an intriguing Group D, and delight in a surprise appearance from Scatman Speller. Hoi Baloy: England hit six, Colombia impress, round three begins…

Eeeeeeeasay! How about that, eh? We’re still giddy from England’s 6-1 demolition of Panama, a display that was as much a party as it was a football match. No we’re not getting carried away, we’re just loving every moment. We’re on such a high we’re even talking about England and Belgium trying a different sport for their final group game, tennis also gets a mention due to an old favourite, and a little bit of goat-based cabin fever sets in. Verdammt: Don’t write off the Germans, respect Sweden and get ready for England…

Germany are back and almost certainly invincible again. We knew it couldn’t last. You have to respect it though. Damn it you have to respect it. Mexico also kept their Group F party going, having harnessed the power of red meat, and Belgium revealed that Tunisia aren’t that good after all. Elsewhere Matthew Kelly is the latest figure to get an inexplicable mention, the Argentina team picks itself, literally, and Senegal delight us with a joyous warm up exercise. Drunk on Mitro: Group E gets tasty and Nigeria arrive

We look back over an entertaining game full of quality and political hand gestures as the Swiss overcome the tough test of Mitro’s Serbia, Neymar’s emotional levee breaks as he opens his account for the tournament, and Nigeria show that there’s more to them than kits as they break Icelandic hearts. Elsewhere there are predictable stepovers, borrowed celebrations and Marcus Berg: Landlord. Messy: Argentina ruin everything, France do enough and Peru will be missed

Marcus’ aunt is particularly giddy today after Argentina’s woeful showing against Croatia, with further dispatches from good old Slappy regarding the sweary reaction to the result over there. There’s also a little reminder that Germany lost to Mexico, which they did when they lost to Mexico, the importance of Olivier Giroud, a history of Herve and Germany losing to Mexico. Happy slaps: Ronaldo scores again, Spain and Uruguay do enough

Sepp Blatter is here, Luis Suarez is scoring, Pepe’s had a fall… oh it’s a classic already. Mostly. Yesterday was a bit drab actually, but whatever. It may have been a cagey day but we’re still having a lovely old time. We discuss Roy Keane’s change of nationality, Cristiano Ronaldo’s giant locker and find that you, our beloved listeners, are now fact checking your own emails, which is frankly ideal, as it saves us (Pete) the work. Chapter two: Sadness for Salah, glee for Russia, disappointment from Poland and Colombia

The first round of games is done and dusted but never fear, the second one has just begun! We delight in Russia’s strange status as both hosts and surprise package, ponder the next moves for Colombia and Poland and look ahead to Cristiano Ronaldo battling it out with Own Goal for the coveted golden boot. One down: England start brightly, Belgium do what you’d expect and England are going to win the World Cup

It’s on! It’s happened! England were good! 1966! Scones! Bank holidays! Still pepped up from the night before, we’ve bounced into the studio to pore over what was a thoroughly enjoyable first game from England. Despite some at times Sassi play from Tunisia they got the job done, and, frankly, we are like dogs with a number of appendages. On top of this we look at Belgium’s controlled demolition of Panama, Sweden and South Korea going through the motions, and the opinions of a certain Diego Maradona. Dare to dream: Mexico make waves, Brazil start slow and England are up…

Viva Mexico! The most World Cup team of all have set our hearts racing with the stand out moment of the tournament so far and we are giddier than a certain Auntie Speller! It wasn’t just Germany who stuttered though, Brazil need to wake up too, while we also got our first glimpse of Mitro. On top of that we hear tales of invisible dragons, Nobby Solano’s generosity, and the ordeal Australian fans are having to go through just to watch the tournament. THUNDERCLAP: France start slowly, Iceland shut out Messi and Peru miss a big chance

We’re in the studio again, even though it’s Sunday, because the World Cup doesn’t stop for anyone. We marvel over Iceland and their warrior-like performance against Argentina, with Rúrik Gíslason getting a lot of attention. From Pete. It’s very intimate. Elsewhere there’s heartbreak for Peru BUT IT’S NOT OVER YET, we try to fathom what we’ll do if England actually win this damn thing and we gear up for for Brazil, Germany… and Mitro. Ha’way the lemurs: Ronaldo arrives, Suarez fires blanks and OG heartbreak for Handsome Hervé

Well! Spain and Portugal treated us to an all time great and we’re still frothing at the mouthes just thinking about it. Cristiano Ronaldo, David De Gea, Diego Costa, that Nacho goal. So many moments. This is what it’s all about. On top of all that there’s Mystic Marcus the psychic pig, a surprisingly misfiring Luis Suarez, and an own goal that may prove to be fateful for everyone’s favourite heartbreaker. Our excitement - and snack budgets - are off the scale as the World Cup finally begins. There’s discussion of Robbie Williams and his relevance, ITV and their always confusing approach to broadcasting, Russian moustaches, BOTH Ronaldos, the Peruvian presence, a man called George Resurrection, Handsome Herve and so much more. A World Cup injury special in association with patient.info

Good news: It's bonus Ramble time! Injuries. Every World Cup has them. Nobody likes them but they’re simply a part of the game. Sometimes their impact can define a nation’s tournament, while the panic over the loss of a key man can all be for nothing after a Lazarus-like recovery. Here we look at the effects of injuries to David Beckham, Franco Baresi and Neymar, via the usual nonsense of rubbing photos to cure a broken foot, Jim’s recently discovered internal udders and Barry “Basher” Davies. ***Please take the time to rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you get your pods. Fever to Tell: England get a win, some big guns slip up and ohGodit’snearlytime!

We can hardly contain our excitement as the WORLD CUP is almost visible in the distance! Gareth Southgate’s heroic England dispatched Nigeria at Wembley, Germany arrogantly leave out Leroy Sane, and Peru’s reinstated hero Paolo Guerrero looks the business at a crucial time. It’s all happening. On top of all this we hear tales of Marcus’ historic meeting with the one and only Kevin Keegan, reveal our fabled Premier League predictions from the start of the season and get a surprisingly unsurprising peek behind the curtain at Legoland. The Football Ramble HISTORY Specials: Beckham kicks Diego Simeone in the 1998 England vs Argentina game

David Beckham is not short of iconic moments for England, but perhaps the most memorable and important came when he was sent off against Argentina for kicking out at Diego Simeone in the 1998 World Cup. Here we look back at the story around the incident and the incredible journey that Beckham took towards redemption. La Decimocertero: Real win three in a row, Fulham and Rotherham up, World Cup fev-o-meter goes into overdrive…

So, club football is all but done for another season, and how. We look back at Gareth Bale’s acrobatics, Sergio Ramos’ villainy and Lorius Karius’ tragedy after one of the stranger Champions League finals. We also look at Fulham’s promotion at the expense of Aston Villa - profoundly not the play off championees - Rotherham’s Wembley victory and the usual stuff like funk, goalkeepers with exploding hair and the delightful development of Martin Allen being on press release duty for Chesterfield. $kwadd Fre$hNe$$: The England squad is announced, the FA Cup final looms and Big Sam says goodbye

England only need a standard sized jet after Gareth Southgate played it safe and named just 23 players in his World Cup squad but it’s still enough to get us excited for the summer, as are Jason Derulo, the Brazil squad and Sweden. They’ve been stocking up on Marcuses, you see. Over at Wembley Man United and Chelsea prepare for a surprise FA Cup final visit from Prince William, while Sam Allardyce and David Moyes bid farewell to their respective clubs. Does this clear the way for these forward thinking young British managers to now be given a chance? Pete remains available for stag weekend hire. Piano Man: Wembley hosts a thriller, City hit 100 points and Wenger and Carrick say goodbye

Another Premier League season comes to an end! We learn that Pep Guardiola can cut it in England, learn of Alan Shearer’s unorthodox stress relief methods and say our temporary goodbyes to Arsene Wenger, Michael Carrick and probably Antonio Conte. Elsewhere, absolute banter-volcano Marcus Speller makes a final push for Jonjo Shelvey to be on that plane, Jose Mourinho consolidates his power and Pete bathes in a glorious Newcastle win. Wagner Love: Relegation is settled, City break records and Yaya says “ta ta”

Huddersfield and Southampton have ruined our hopes for a dramatic final day relegation scrap but there’s plenty of fun to be had as the Saints finally get the credit they deserve and Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola dish out awards with mixed results, to the chagrin of a certain John Toshack. Elsewhere, Big Weng is linked with a surprising move, Stevie Gers gets ready to halt Celtic’s charge for McDecima and there’s a welcome return for anti-tank missiles. RATS: The Champions League excites, Jose has a favourite and West Ham have work to do

As expected, a certain young man won big at Man United’s end of season awards (forever more known as The Scotties), Liverpool shun game management in favour of an absolute thrill ride and we try to keep some narrative going by tipping absolutely everyone for relegation. More dustbin hearts: United say goodbye to Wenger, Southampton get a crucial win and Big Sam takes flak

Pete returns from his American adventure, unable to work the production buttons, and to find that despite recent events Arsenal’s scriptwriters are as lazy as ever, Mark Hughes is earning his handshakes and it could well be the End of Days for some British managers. Respect the dogs: United make City wait, Big Sam causes unrest and Napoli get us giddy

We’re back from Naples and though pieces of us will remain there forever we’ve raced into the studio to bring you our wares. Michel Vroom: Liverpool brush City aside, Everton brace themselves and Man United look to put next door’s party on hold

Liverpool get us all giddy after their scintillating display against a rattled Man City, Mick McCarthy weighs up whether he can be bothered with the West Brom job and there’s something about Aleksandar Mitrovic stealing time. As well as all this Marcus gets understandably irked by a pitch for Ramble Airlines, Charlie Adam throws a strop and Hatem Ben Arfa has a pizza-based dilemma. Taxi for Pards: Alan leaves West Brom, Spurs win the Battle of the Bridge and Zlatan steals the show

Happy Easter you lot! We drag ourselves to the studio even on a Bank Holiday to bring you news of Alan Pardew’s departure from West Brom, David Wagner’s relaxed attitude towards the relegation battle and Man City preparing their championship champagne. Elsewhere there’s some ‘instinctual’ reactions from Marko Arnautovic, some unsurprising contractual stipulations from Ronaldinho and, of course, the gift that keeps on Kevin. Steak and Barry pie: England march on, the Premier League returns and Carlos Tevez continues his reign of terror

England’s 1-1 draw was so promising that known misog Pete Donaldson is getting excited, even if he does also treble down on a pre-existing gripe. To temper this excitement Aleksandar Mitrovic remains aflame, Carlos Tevez continues his exemplary professionalism and Arsene Wenger pipes up about some new isms. On top of this we welcome the Premier League back into the fold, we hear from some trustworthy Barrys and there’s a treat from the Neil Warnock archives. The milk sweats: England crush the Dutch, Scotland look to the future and Ronaldo puffs out his chest

England took on the Netherlands and gave us reasons to make noises, get excited about the World Cup and talk about Bas Dost, three things that are frankly long overdue. Discover our joy as we use phrases like “distribution”, “versatile” and “got a big Lampard.” Meanwhile, in the rest of the sport, Scotland got back underway with Big Eckos of the past and dispatches from the Hamburger queue, Cristiano Ronaldo reminded everybody who’s boss and we put out a call to Barrys everywhere. Walter Tull: Profile of a Pioneer

100 years ago this weekend, Walter Tull was killed in action in the First World War. While not a name that immediately springs to mind when we think of the people that influenced our game the most over the years, Tull was a pioneer. We first profiled him back in November 2009, and with increasing calls for him to be recognised posthumously for his services both to football and the military, we thought it would be nice to re-release his entry into our hall of fame from nine or so years ago. His story is incredible and his contribution to football and society in general can never be underestimated. The Football Ramble, the original and best football podcast. Salah Days: Mo shines for Liverpool, Mourinho sulks in victory and the England squad… inspires.

Sadly the FA Cup delivered no cupsets but we still enjoyed it, certainly more than Luke Shaw will have after another dressing down from Jose Mourinho, Mo Salah excites us into thinking he may be the greatest human in history and Newcastle get in a glorious bonus dig at Sunderland. On top of this the England squad musters enthusiasm, in a way, Neil Warnock spies a conspiracy, and Romario absolutely doesn’t. You can’t go home again: Chaos at West Ham, Jose Mourinho blunts Liverpool and Newcastle gain momentum

Another chaotic week at West Ham as they took on both Burnley and themselves, Man United did some very interesting things to Jurgen Klopp’s face and Marcus continues to fill the England plane to the point where aviation laws are surely being recklessly disregarded. On top of that there’s a long time mystery solved for Steve Cotterill, some dear listeners receive a warm welcome to Villa Park and Aleksandar Mitrovic continues his war on Pete’s heart. The Football Ramble Shredder: Shred Harder

Dear Listeners, Once again we want to show some love to the many of you who send in your correspondence. In this special you’ll hear us discuss a potentially dark twist in the future of VAR, fake warmth (the scourge of League Two) and what football can learn from Wrestlemania. You want more? You got it. There’s Stuart Pearce kicking off at the opera, more warlock chat, and footballers at weddings. It’s the kind of stuff you just won’t get on Jermaine Jenas’ Mail Bag, presumably coming soon. Big Sam and The Drifters: Swansea march on, Chelsea clam up at Man City and Arsenal’s woes continue…

The lining of Carlos Carvalhal’s jacket inspires his rejuvenated Swans to victory over generous West Ham, Arsenal’s holograms at least manage consistency and Antonio Conte simply doesn’t seem that fussed. Alongside all this, Garth Crooks attacks science, we discuss our various personal vendettas and Marcus is keen to fill up that England plane, potentially with Championship players. Why not eh? Rafael the Gaffael: Spurs win in the Wembley snow, fears for Chelsea as they visit the Etihad and Liverpool vs Newcastle promises goals…

Both snow and goals fell heavily at Wembley as Spurs march on in the FA Cup, Burnley and Everton brick up their nets and scoff at the very idea of something as fancy as scoring, while the lucky boys of Liverpool look forward to a visit from Newcastle.
