Spain won their first Women's World Cup last week, but the fallout has instead been dominated by one man; president of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales. Rubiales planted a kiss on Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso's lips during the medal ceremony, a kiss she said was non-consensual. Since then, Rubiales has been suspended but ignored calls to step down as Spanish football descends into chaos... even leading to his own mother going on hunger strike over accusations against him earlier this week. To discuss a fast moving story and what it says for women in sport, The Athletic's Laura Williamson, Laia Cervello and Adam Crafton joined host Ayo Akinwolere. After six years of fighting for equal pay, the U.S. Soccer Federation and the USWNT have agreed to a $24 million settlement in the equal pay lawsuit (1:44). Sandra Herrera and Lisa Roman discuss the timeline dating back to 2016 when Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd and more first raised the question of equal pay to the USSF. In 2019 this lawsuit was officially brought to the courts and has been a long fight for both the USWNT players as well as the U.S. Soccer Federation, creating a hostile relationship between employee and employer. The $24M settlement is contingent on the ratification of a new CBA for the USWNT. Once the CBA is ratified, the approval of the settlement by the courts will be scheduled and the litigation will be fully resolved. Spearheading this fight was USWNT stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe stated that they fought for equality for the future of the sport. In the second half of the episode, Attacking Third's Lisa Roman joined Poppy Miller on CBS Sports HQ with former USWNT star Aly Wagner to speak with U.S. Soccer Federation President Cindy Parlow Cone about the new settlement between the federation and the USWNT (16:28). Cindy discusses how US Soccer and the players came to this agreement on $24M settlement and what this means for the future of the sport.
