Episode 480 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Fallen Leaves)

The latest AFTN Soccer Show is out for another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS, and Canadian football chat.We cover a lot of bases this week as we talk football at club and country level around the country and the region.Kicking things off in Major League Soccer, we delve into the latest Cascadia Cup clash that saw the Whitecaps fall to a 4-1 defeat in Seattle. After a horrible start, they gave a decent account of themselves at times during the match, but defensive lapses loomed large and cost them dearly. We look at all the highs and lows coming out of the match, where that leave's the 'Caps in the MLS West playoff race, and look at the season run-in for all the team in and around them.Moving on to the international stage and CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, we look back at Canada's two draws with Mexico and Jamaica, the chances taken and the missed opportunities, and after a dramatic round of games, where that leaves all the teams five matches in ahead of a big Canada v Panama game on Wednesday evening. And we round things off this episode with a discussion about the new League 1 BC that was officially announced this week. We chat about the details that have been revealed thus far and discuss whether BC is ready for such a league, the importance of getting the excitement in the local communities in growing the game here, what this can mean in the grand scheme of player development, and a lot more. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode:01.41: Intro and football cards11.46: Sounders v Whitecaps postgame analysis29.41: MLS West playoff race - the lie of the land and the road ahead46.00: Canada CONCACAF World Cup qualifying chat82.07: League 1 BC launch discussion104.45: Wavelength - Loyalty - Give Football Back To The Working Class

Episode 148: USA v Panama, Concacaf in Austria

It was a Concacaf meeting in Wiener Neustadt, southern Austria. Second friendly syndrome. Despite all the goals and the young debuts, it just didn’t have the same pop as that 0-0 draw against Wales. We discuss the match in detail, and what we think we learned from it.

2020.08.18 - Frying pan, fire

After the mildly unexpected victory of Lyon over Manchester City in the last of the Champions' League quarter-finals, Kris, Jez and Phil convene for a short bonus pod in which we all try to work out what the heck happened, who was (ir)responsible, who shone, who didn't, and what might happen as the semi-finals heave into view.

2020.08.13 - E-Moting

It's been a busy week as the 2019/20 season hits the business end(TM) - Kris, Jez and Phil review PSG's last-minute comeback against Atalanta, Lyon progressing against Juventus, and the Coupe de France Feminine final, where OL beat PSG on penalties after an unexpected goalless draw. In the Champions' League, Lyon will play Manchester City on Saturday, and we nervously consider how that could pan out, as well as discussing PSG's chances against their yet-to-be-confirmed opponent (Atletico Madrid or RB Leipzig). In the women's game, both OL and PSG will be off to Bilbao for the final stages of the WCL, to face Bayern Munich and Arsenal respectively.

2nd’s the best: England draw Colombia, Panama make their mark, heartbreak for Senegal

So, there’s no football today. It’s so weird. However, nature abhors a vacuum so we’ve got a podcast full of it anyway. We look back over England and Belgium’s strange, somewhat empty battle for top/second spot, Japan’s self-flagellation regarding their slightly ironic qualification via fair play and bid a fond farewell to some of the characters we’ll miss from a brilliant World Cup group stage. On top of all this we also have an update on the various Marci who are still in the competition, plot England’s route to glory and turn our attention to the last 16.
