From the Jaws of Victory - Football’s Heartbreaking Moments with Rob McDonald and Adam Bushby

Seb Stafford-Bloor is joined by Rob McDonald, Adam Bushby and Brooks Peck to discuss football’s nearly men... Rob and Adam have a new book, 'From the Jaws of Victory - A History of Football’s Nearly Men'. It is packed full of anecdotes and tales of teams who so nearly tasted victory, including a chapter on Ghana’s 2010 World Cup heartbreak by The Athletic’s Brooks Peck. The quartet talk about their own footballing heartbreak, why we seem to remember those gut-wrenching moments most vividly, and whether we’ll look back on Liverpool’s 2013/14 season in the same way we look back on England ‘96. 2020.08.18 - Frying pan, fire

After the mildly unexpected victory of Lyon over Manchester City in the last of the Champions' League quarter-finals, Kris, Jez and Phil convene for a short bonus pod in which we all try to work out what the heck happened, who was (ir)responsible, who shone, who didn't, and what might happen as the semi-finals heave into view.

2020.08.13 - E-Moting

It's been a busy week as the 2019/20 season hits the business end(TM) - Kris, Jez and Phil review PSG's last-minute comeback against Atalanta, Lyon progressing against Juventus, and the Coupe de France Feminine final, where OL beat PSG on penalties after an unexpected goalless draw. In the Champions' League, Lyon will play Manchester City on Saturday, and we nervously consider how that could pan out, as well as discussing PSG's chances against their yet-to-be-confirmed opponent (Atletico Madrid or RB Leipzig). In the women's game, both OL and PSG will be off to Bilbao for the final stages of the WCL, to face Bayern Munich and Arsenal respectively.

The Blizzard: Uruguay 1-1 Ghana (4-2 pens), 2010

It is almost ten years to the day since one of the most dramatic matches in World Cup history unfolded on a raucous night in Johannesburg. BBC 5 Live commentator Conor McNamara joins us to look back at the iconic clash between Ghana and Uruguay on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard! The hopes of a continent, and probably every neutral around the world, rested on a Ghanaian side that took on Uruguay and their fearsome attacking talent for a place in the semi-finals. Two goals either side of half time set up an extra-time period unlike any other, with Luis Suárez at his infamous worst – all set to the pulsating drone of 84,000 vuvuzelas. The Ramble: David Moyes returns to West Ham, Arsenal lose but improve, and VAR is rubbish again. And again. And again…

David Moyes is back in charge at West Ham as they once again ask him to ferry them to safety! Is anything surprising any more? No, not really. Elsewhere in London, Arsenal and Chelsea played out an energetic game that felt like a victory for Arsenal - despite it being a victory for Chelsea - because they weren’t booed off. Small victories and all that. There was also lots of action in the Championship, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers got one over on Celtic and we chat thrusting, IKEA stadiums and cramp.
