Jimbo’s joined by his continental crew - Pol Ballús, James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Seb Stafford-Bloor - to look back on a seismic week of European action - and all the fallout from Monday night’s Ballon d’Or ceremony which has left Real Madrid rather unhappy… We dive into the big news coming out of Old Trafford - that Manchester United are working on a deal to appoint Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. Portuguese journalist David Novo brings us the latest. There was pandemonium at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday night as La Liga leaders Barcelona thrashed their fierce rivals in El Clasico to move six points clear at the top of the table. It was also a week to forget for Atléti, beaten 1-0 at Betis which means they’re 10 points off the pace despite their record summer spending. There was also chaos in Serie A, with the Derby d'Italia finishing 4-4 between Juventus and Inter. Napoli took advantage to extend their lead at the top to 4 points after their narrow 1-0 win over Lecce. Bayern Munich responded to their midweek mauling by Barcelona by dishing out a 5-0 defeat to Bochum, while Dortmund were condemned to their third straight away Bundesliga defeat at the hands of Augsburg AND Leverkusen got Leverkusened - conceding a 90th minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen. And in Ligue 1, PSG are now the only unbeaten side in the division as they comfortably disposed of Marseille 3-0, while Monaco and Lens both tasted defeat for the first time this season. Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moment of the weekend & Ballon d’Or fallout (00.35) • PART 2: Rúben Amorim to Man United? Greetings, one and all – welcome to a brand new episode of On The Continent! Andy Brassell’s in the chair alongside Nicky Bandini and Miguel Delaney to discuss another week of continental capers. We begin with a truly underwhelming El Clásico, as Barcelona’s struggles continue. We discuss the difficulties Quique Setién is facing as the first ideology-driven manager the Catalans have had in a long while, and wonder whether the era of Lionel Messi is nearing an end. We then swing over to Italy where, as well as trying to make sense of the widespread disruption thanks to the Coronavirus, we discuss Lazio lead at the top of Serie A, their first for ten years! There’s also time for a discussion about German ultra culture, after protests against Dietmar Hopp continue, and Daniel Sturridge’s worldwide ban from football. Fancy getting in touch? The Fussball-Meisters are back again for a brand new episode of On The Continent. There’s a whole load of stuff on the docket today, and we begin with last night’s El Clásico. It was the first goalless tie between the two sides since 2002, and Real Madrid were (predictably) unhappy with some of the officiating. We discuss Zinedine Zidane’s deserved public praise for Gareth Bale after his impressive display, as well as Luka Jović’s struggles in the Spanish capital. We then take stock of a crazy Bundesliga game Andy saw earlier this week, as a Jadon Sancho-inspired Dortmund somehow didn’t emerge victorious from a cracking 3-3 with RB Leipzig. We also celebrate the goalscoring return of original OTC Goalbae Patrik Schick, before looking ahead to Leipzig’s intriguing matchup against Spurs in the Champions League and previewing the draw more generally. James also talks about his recent chat with Max Allegri, and we have some cracking Games of the Week lined up. Join us! Correspondence?
