Marcus and Luke also get David to reassure all the Sunderland fans listening by confirming that he thinks they’ll stay in the Premier League next season and a listener offers Marcus the chance to swap Italy’s results from the last ten years with England’s. Adam Hurrey, Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker entertain this month's listener entries for Mesut Haaland Dicks, as the Clichés faithful nominate their niche footballing fascinations and irritations. Among the selections are the injury reports in 5-a-side group chats, players who look like they think throw-ins are beneath them, the horror of watching a game on a TV from an angle of less than 40 degrees and the unsatisfying asterisk that looms over at least half a dozen major international tournament winners since 1954. Meanwhile, the Adjudication Panel ponder how many departing players make an "exodus". This morning the joint UK and Ireland bid to host Euro 2028 was confirmed as successful with Turkey joining Italy to host the 2032 tournament. The awarding of the tournaments came soon after FIFA had confirmed six nations across three tournaments would host the 2030 World Cup... and that leaves an inevitable host for the 2034 tournament. Are one nation host tournaments now a thing of the past? How do Suj and James feel about Football Coming Home and the choice of selected venues across the UK and Ireland? Is it now inevitable that Saudi Arabia will get the 2034 World Cup? And could we be moving towards Winter international tournaments? Michael Owen crashed on to the scene in May 1997 in a Premier League game for Liverpool against Wimbledon, and marked it with a goal. Obviously. From then on his career was a whirlwind that involved setting international tournaments alight, a move abroad to the biggest club in the world, injuries, and goals. Lots and lots of goals. Marcus caught up with Michael for this latest edition of Ramble Meets... to discuss his career, what it takes to get to the very top, a certain night in St Etienne in the summer of 1998, and how he views his time at Real Madrid. This episode of Ramble Meets... is available to acast+ subscribers from Wednesday 5th September, and all Football Ramble subscribers a week later from the 12th. This interview took place at Pro:Direct LDN19 for the launch of Umbro’s Speciali 98 collection, a boot inspired by that night in St. Etienne.
