Adam also announces his new book, Extra Time Beckons, Penalties Loom: How to Use (and Abuse) The Language of Football, which is available to pre-order: https://geni.us/ExtraTimeBeckons Learn more about your ad choices. The Blizzard: Peru 4-2 Austria, 1936

Today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, sees us travel back to the 1936 German Olympics. Journalist and sports writer David Owen joins us to discuss the chaotic quarter-final between Peru and Austria. The game was played against a backdrop of Nazi rule and propaganda in front of a fairly empty Stadion am Gesundbrunnen. These were two sides with contrasting fortunes throughout the 1930’s; Peru were beginning an impressive run of form that culminated in a victory at the 1939 Copa América, while Austria had begun a stark decline. Despite the sides’ lowly reputation, the match and extended aftermath were utterly bizarre. Join us as David, Jonathan and Marcus discuss a tumultuous affair involving a pitch invasion, three disallowed goals and a rescheduled game.
