The Premier League continues to dominate and it’s where Musa and Ryan begin this week, recapping the games they live-tweeted via The Ringer’s Twitter account, after Manchester City beat Arsenal (02:37) and Manchester United beat Newcastle (12:18). There’s chat about the synergy between Everton’s men and women’s teams (15:51) and the Merseyside derby, which saw one red card and a potentially season-ending injury for Virgil van Dijk (15:51), plus normalizing Aston Villa’s winning ways (25:31). They then recap the two wild 3-3 draws between Chelsea and Southampton (26:47) and Spurs and West Ham (33:18), before rounding up the Women’s Super League, including Vivianne Miedema breaking the all-time league goal scoring record (37:07). Then, there’s a trip 'round the Bundesliga (41:13), La Liga (45:51), Serie A (51:55), and Rangers’ victory in the Old Firm Derby (55:43) before some reactions to the Disrespected XI podcast (58:10). Musa and Ryan are back to try to make sense of a wildly chaotic weekend of soccer. They begin in the Premier League, where Leicester beat Manchester City 5-2 at the Etihad, thanks to a Jamie Vardy hat trick (4:40), where Sheffield United and Wolves are struggling at the start of the season following defeats to Leeds and West Ham (16:11), and where Brighton and Spurs were the victims of last-minute VAR calls (17:58) and Chelsea came from 3-0 down to salvage a draw at West Brom (21:25). The guys give a roundup of the Women’s FA Cup results and then move on to the Bundesliga, where the chaos continued as none of last season’s top five won, with Dortmund losing at Augsburg (25:38) and Bayern losing at Hoffenheim (30:25). Also, Lionel Messi was back in a Barcelona shirt, scoring in a stress-free 4-0 win at home to Villarreal (38:58), Luis Suarez scored two of Atleti's six in his debut (42:58), and the guys take a quick look at Serie A. They move on to a weird game of two halves at St. Mary’s, which saw Spurs beat Southampton 5-2 (17:41), Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat at home to a brilliant Crystal Palace (26:40), Arsenal grinding out a win against West Ham (35:30), and Everton beginning to blossom (40:49). They then head to the Bundesliga opening weekend, where Bayern demolished Schalke 8-0 (46:51) and Dortmund were victorious in the Borussen Derby, with the young guns doing the damage for BVB (56:02). Then it’s off to Serie A for a first look at Andrea Pirlo’s Juventus, which featured a brilliant Weston McKennie performance in midfield (61:46), and they end up in La Liga (65:59). We’re looking back at one of the most infamous seasons in Serie A history on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Writer and musician Dan Carney joins us to discuss the 1964 title-deciding playoff between Inter and Bologna! Nobody would have expected Bologna to be challenging for the Serie A title at the start of the 1963/64 season, since their previous title came in 1941, while Helenio Herrera’s famous Grande Inter side was among the favourites. What followed was an era-defining Serie A title race, featuring drug scandals and points deductions, that ended in Inter and Bologna finishing on the same points. There was only one thing for it: a championship tie-breaker at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico! We look back at one of the famous sides of post-war Europe on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Journalist and author Dominic Bliss joins us to discuss the Grande Torino side and their 5-3 win over Atalanta in the 1946/47 Serie A season. After managing Torino in 1939, Jewish coach Ernő Egri Erbstein had to return to Hungary as the Second World War begun. He saw no alternative but to volunteer himself to work in fascist labour camps to try and survive – after six torturous years where he and his family endured the worst of the Hungarian holocaust, he managed to escape the camp and stay alive. After the war ended, he returned to Torino and coached a side that had won two Serie A titles since his departure, on the back of his central European counter-attacking football that was so prevalent at the time. Dominic joins us to discuss Erbstein’s remarkable life, his return to Turin and his place among the pantheon of great Hungarian coaches. We're not just immersing ourselves in any old atmosphere on today's retrospective episode of At The Match – we're off to sample one of the most intense atmospheres in world football. In November 2018 Andy travelled to Italy for a Serie A blockbuster weekend, which concluded with a trip to sample Luciano Spalletti's Inter revival. At the San Siro, he caught up with coach and pundit Kevin Cauet, who discusses what it means about being part of the Inter family and the fans that have kept the club going through leaner times. He also talks about his father Benoit, who signed for the Nerrazzurri in 1997, and recounts his tales of training with Ronaldo and Roberto Baggio.
