Manuel Neuer’s potential return to the Germany national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been addressed by head coach Julian Nagelsmann. Germany do not have an undisputed first-choice goalkeeper heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which has fueled speculation about a possible return for Manuel Neuer. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann spoke about the situation. “I always find it quite amusing when the public asks me whether I’m in contact with Manu. Yes, I am,” Nagelsmann admitted during a recent interview with MagentaTV. However, the coach then clarified the nature of his communication with the veteran goalkeeper. “We call each other occasionally, we text occasionally. He is capable of using WhatsApp, as am I,” Julian explained. “We also sometimes talk about other topics beyond football. We have a very good relationship.” Nagelsmann and Neuer share a close relationship, having worked together for several years. The coach was in charge of Bayern Munich between 2021 and 2023, during which time the goalkeeper remained active and played a key role in the Bundesliga title in 2021 as well as the German Super Cup triumphs in 2021 and 2022. Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid attempts to shoot past Manuel Neuer of FC Bayern Munich. In addition, when Nagelsmann was appointed Germany head coach, Neuer was still part of the squad and played under him at Euro 2024. Following that tournament, the goalkeeper decided to end his international career, and Nagelsmann does not believe that decision will change: “Manu has retired of his own free will. He has repeated that several times now. So I don’t think it makes much sense to keep discussing it constantly.” The race to be Germany’s goalkeeper at the World Cup Speculation about a possible return for Manuel Neuer is not only linked to his performances with Bayern Munich, but also to the lack of a clear standout option to fill that role for the Germany national team. Marc-Andre Ter Stegen appeared to be the natural successor, but a difficult run of injuries in recent times has hurt his chances. In fact, the Girona goalkeeper is currently in the final stages of recovery from a hamstring injury and hopes to return in time for the closing stretch of the La Liga season, which could give him a chance to compete for a World Cup spot. For now, however, that race has a clear frontrunner. Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann has started seven of Germany’s last eight matches, including the entirety of their World Cup qualifying campaign. That places him as the leading candidate, with Stuttgart’s Alexander Nubel serving as the main alternative.

The retired midfielder’s absence for the semi-final of Euro 2016 was the great ‘what-if’ of Welsh football, but even so his brilliant career managed to transform a footballing public for ever If some footballers take time to reach their potential, others seem to be the finished article before they’re able to drive. A teenage Aaron Ramsey was firmly in the latter camp. After only 11 league starts for Cardiff he had made his international debut for Wales against Denmark, turned down Manchester United in favour of Arsenal, and given Cardiff fans one of the great what-ifs of their club’s modern age after Dave Jones chose not to start him in the 2008 FA Cup final against Portsmouth, with Ramsey being the tender age of 17. Success-starved supporters who should know better will pin their hopes on to the narrowest of young shoulders and yet it all seemed so easy for the teenager from Caerphilly who was captain of his country by the age of 20, would go on to play in a World Cup and two European Championships, and this week retired as an icon of the Welsh game.

Luis Suarez could end up facing Lamine Yamal’s Spain after leaving the door open for a return to Uruguay national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Luis Suarez had not been part of Uruguay‘s World Cup plans until now, currently 39 years old and winding down his career at Inter Miami. But the veteran striker could yet find himself facing Lamine Yamal‘s Spain after leaving the door open to a surprise return to the Celeste. Suarez brought his international career to a close in September 2024, playing the full 90 minutes in Uruguay‘s CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier against Paraguay before stepping away. Since then, he has been absent for the Celeste’s last 17 matches, including the remaining qualifying fixtures and the most recent round of friendly games. In an interview with Uruguayan outlet Diario Ovación, Suarez opened up about what retirement from the national team has felt like: “I’ll be honest with you… It’s a reality that since I retired from the national team… The flame of football has been slowly dying out for me. You maintain the desire, that passion for football through goals, through dreams, and you always dreamed of being in the national team.“ The striker then shed some light on the thinking behind his decision, while also hinting at second thoughts. “I retired from the national team to pave the way for other players and because I thought a time had come when I could no longer be useful to the national team.” But he stopped short of closing the door entirely. “Obviously, the national team is always what you want. Today you start thinking and turning things over in your head, and you are close to the World Cup, and if they need you, what do you do?” he added. Luis Suarez acknowledges the fans on his last match as a player of the Uruguay national team. One of the biggest obstacles standing between Suarez and a potential comeback is not his form in front of goal, but his strained relationship with head coach Marcelo Bielsa. Just a month after announcing his international retirement, Suárez publicly took aim at the Argentine manager, claiming that “Bielsa has separated the entire group, even through his way of training.“ Despite that friction, Suárez made his loyalty to Uruguay crystal clear, with the final squad list expected to be submitted in May. “I will never say no to my country; I will absolutely never say no to my country. If they need me, I will never say no to the national team. That is impossible, as long as I keep playing, as long as I remain competitive,” he concluded. Suarez and Yamal could clash for the first time Although Suarez was one of Barcelona’s most lethal strikers during his time at the club, he and Lamine Yamal never shared a pitch in the first team. Suarez left Barcelona in 2020 and Atletico Madrid in 2022, while Yamal made his debut in April 2023, by which point the Uruguayan had already returned to South America. The 2026 World Cup, however, could bring together the past, present and future of FC Barcelona on the same field. Uruguay and Spain have been drawn together in Group H and are set to meet on Friday, June 26, at Estadio Akron, in what figures to be a pivotal match in the group standings, one where both Yamal and a potentially returning Suárez could prove to be the difference-makers.

In the hot seat today is David Bentley. Coming through at Arsenal with every day on the training ground being a fight, with powerful figures such as Vieira, Henry and Keown all sharing the dressing room under Wenger. Bentley who is proudly considered Invincible, dives into squaring up Thierry Henry, getting slapped by Vieira for daring to sit in his seat, and even an awkward encounter with a naked Wenger in the sauna. After a loan spell, where he played with possibly a future pope, Bentley came back in and told Wenger he didn’t want to stay at Arsenal so went up to Blackburn to host ‘legendary parties’. Bentley is a true maverick of the game but as well as that he is a man with “no regrets” so he opens up on his why he walked away from football at the age of 29, and the misconceptions that followed him from “not caring” to being too much of a maverick. It's been a bad stretch for the Brazilian national team, having lost three in a row and fall to sixth place in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying. I mean this news only gets worse--star forward Neymar Jr. will miss next summer's 2024 Copa America scheduled for American shores. Brazilian sensation The Al-Hilal forward has been out with a knee injury since September of 2023, and team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar commented on Neymar's recovery while the knock takes about nine months to recover from. In an interview with Radio 98 FM, Lasmar says: “It's too soon now; from one extreme to another is wrong. Why would we hurry things and risk unnecessary harm? We hope that he can return as early as the beginning of next season (August) in Europe." Given the ligament damage Neymar suffered and his own injury history, it's difficult to force a 31-year-old back into action as soon he becomes available. It doesn't help matters that Brazil have been struggling without him in successive World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru either. This news increases the pressure on Real Madrid`s Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, two players who Brazil will have to depend upon in future when Neymar finally hangs his cleats up. Their latest blow still has them coached by the interim manager Fernando Diniz, who also happens to be head coach of Brazilian club Fluminense. With no competitive matches before June 2024-a date set only on May 7 this year when they lost their first international match since October in a World Cup warm-up against Panama), there may not even have time The Neymar era is over: If Brazil is to avoid wasting another generation of talent, the 2026 World Cup must be planned without star-struck Al-Hilal. It would be foolish to count on the old Selecao attacker, who is now just a physical wreck. Brazil's 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Uruguay offered a depressingly familiar sight of Neymar being carted off the pitch in tears. Al-Hilal later announced that the 31 year old had sustained a tear to his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his knee, penciling him for surgery. Thankfully Neymar's operation went well, but there is still a long period of rehabilitation ahead. The seasoned striker is unlikely to return to action in Saudi Pro League this term, and experts believe he has no chance of making Brazil's squad for the 2024 Copa America starting June 20. So worries about his physical condition led Paris Saint-Germain to sell Neymar in the summer. He found the back of the net 118 times in his 178 games for Le Parc, winning five Ligue I titles along with three French Cups and one Champions Trophy. But Mbappe also missed more than 60 matches through injury during this time. 🤩 @neymarjr is happy with the win 🫶🏻#AlHilal 💙 pic.twitter.com/4yZd72RMRR — AlHilal Saudi Club (@Alhilal_EN) November 3, 2023 With that dismal fitness record, Fernando Diniz still insists that Neymar has an important role to play for Brazil in the next few years. Speaking at a press conference last week, the interim Selecao boss said: "We hope he makes speedy recovery and gets back into action better than ever." " I believe that he has still not written his most beautiful pages. This incident hasn't made it impossible, just more difficult; but using this injury as a springboard to come back tougher will make him even stronger." When the next World Cup swings around in Canada, Mexico and the United States, Neymar will be 34. That exquisite trophy of solid gold is one missing from an otherwise gleaming CV, and Brazil won't be able to hold high their sixth world crown if Scolari remains in his starting XI by then. If Brazil were lacking in attacking firepower, it would make sense to help create an atmosphere conducive for Neymar's international career. Unfortunately they are enjoying a golden age of strikers at the moment and have more young talent than even the most wildly optimistic minds can imagine. The full potential of the former Barcelona superstar will never be realized, but plenty others promise success where he failed. It's time for a cold-blooded choice to stay or go. Brazil is still far from leaving the past behind, but continously holding on to an iconic figure whose time has clearly passed can only hamper their chances of becoming world's best team again. Neymar has contributed so much to his country, and he boasts an incredible return in international football of 79 goals from 128. He netted the fastest ever goal by a Brazilian, and in doing so passed Pele to become Selecao all-time top scorer with 74 (it should be enough just for that reason alone -- he's already mentioned as one of the great legends). For one thing, glory in the World Cup and Copa America has proved elusive for Neymar. But he hasn't slacked off either bit around here! At these big tournaments he has netted 13 times and eight assists from a total of 25 outings. Some of the recollections from those performances will live forever. His goal in Brazil's World Cup quarter-final against Croatia in 2014 is not only one of the great ones on that stage but also goes down as a second masterpiece among his own creations. Since the time he first appeared on our screens against America's as an 18-year old way back in November, 2010 Brazilian fans have been blessed to see Neymar do so many things that make you feel good. If you were to turn and run, they would cheer. Even so, Neymar has been a good servant-he doesn't want to risk damaging the legacy that his willpower and determination have helped him earn for Brazilian football by continuing make himself available. The time is ripe for Neymar to put an end to his Brazil career and give way for a new generation capable of greater achievement than any team he has been involved with previously.

Should we judge Gareth Bale for the end of his career? Yes, Gareth Bale won everything there is to win at the club level, but his career ended with him sitting not playing on purpose. His loan back to Tottenham was a failure. Even his time in MLS was unremarkable until the absolute last second when he scored to help LAFC win MLS Cup. Did he win enough or could he have done more?
