Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has issued a stark assessment of football in West Africa, pointing to poor player salaries, weak structures, and inadequate infrastructure as key reasons the region continues to lag behind leagues in South Africa and Morocco.Speaking in an interview with Brila FM, the Nigerian shot-stopper gave a frank evaluation of the challenges facing domestic football across the region, stressing that many players are forced to leave in search of better conditions abroad.“In West Africa, our leagues are not as good. We want to go to Europe, we want to come to South Africa, we want to go to Morocco,” he said.Nwabali explained that only a few clubs can offer competitive wages, leaving many players with limited financial security during their careers.“The league, the pay is a little bit nice for a certain level of your team,” he added.Beyond financial issues, the goalkeeper highlighted the clear gap in infrastructure and organisation, noting that leagues in countries such as South Africa and Morocco benefit from better stadiums, stronger administration, and more professional setups. He argued that these advantages make their domestic competitions more attractive and sustainable compared to many West African leagues.In...

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Fred Pappoe has called on Ghanaians to throw their full support behind newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz as the team intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.The Portuguese tactician has been handed a short-term contract to lead Ghana at the tournament, replacing Otto Addo after a difficult run of results that included defeats to Austria and Germany in March, as well as Ghana's failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.Speaking on Adom FM, Pappoe stressed the importance of unity and collective backing given the limited time before the World Cup.“We have limited time for the World Cup, and if you look into the list available and you check our pocket, I believe we have to rally behind whoever has been appointed,” he said.Pappoe added that Queiroz’s extensive experience—including four World Cup appearances—should be seen as a major advantage rather than a point of criticism.“We were all clamouring for a respected coach, and someone who can transform the team has been chosen, so we must support him,” Pappoe stated.Queiroz is expected to meet the Black Stars squad next month during a...

Senegal are champions of Africa for the 2nd time in the last 3 tournaments... but somehow, that seems like just a small part of the story. We'll share our thoughts on everything from the controversial calls to ball boys battling for towels to players being pulled off the pitch. Then, it's off to Manchester where the boys break down a dominant showing from Manchester United in Michael Carrick's debut. We'll talk about what we liked from United in this 2-0 win over City and whether or not we think it's sustainable. And finally, following their latest home defeat to West Ham, we'll take a look at Tottenham and ask the question "can it get worse?" in our our newest segment titled "It Can." Alexi Lalas and David Mosse are back with a new episode of State of the Union! Today, we discuss the utter CHAOS that was the AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco. Disallowed goals, controversial penalties, players leaving the pitch, a missed panenka, fights over towels and so much more went down in Senegal’s 1-0 victory. We go to England next to break down the latest in Josh Sargent’s transfer saga with Norwich City, both Haji Wright and Patrick Agyemang finding the back of the yet, and the potential of a Ricardo Pepi Premier League move. In #AskAlexi, we have a voicemail asking if the USL’s move to a pro/rel system will have a bigger impact than MLS changing its season calendar. Finally, in One for the Road, Alexi reacts to the rumors that Sporting Kansas City will be sold for $700M. It’s Jimbo, Daniel Storey, Colin Millar and Luis Miguel Echegaray in position after another dramatic weekend of Premier League action. It’s 4 games without a win for Man City as Michael Carrick’s Man United produce a performance for the ages to win 2-0. How did the Red Devils do it? For the second matchday in a row, Arsenal fail to fully capitalise on City’s slip-up as they draw 0-0 at Forest. Will Mikel Arteta come to regret these missed opportunities in the title race? Perhaps not as Villa also stutter with a 1-0 defeat to Everton. We record the pod as the AFCON final is in progress, not knowing what was about to unfold. It may have made sense on paper but in the end, Xabi Alonso was just not the right fit at Real Madrid. How much of it was his fault and how much of it were just the pitfalls of trying to coach a squad loaded with massive egos? Then, we'll get into Manchester United's decision to hire Michael Carrick as their head coach for the remainder of the season. He may be a familiar face but is he the right face? We'll discuss. Plus, Semenyo and Cherki lead City to a first leg win over Newcastle while Arsenal manage to overcome the "Aging Men" of Liam Rosenior's Chelsea in their first leg. And finally, Timo Werner is coming to MLS, Conor Gallagher is headed to Spurs and the Africa Cup of Nations has a final that will hopefully be better than the two semis. Welcome to It Was What It Was, the football history podcast. In today’s episode, co-hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper explore one of the most powerful stories in football history: Zambia’s remarkable triumph at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Jonathan, who covered the 2012 tournament on the ground, shares firsthand reflections of what he calls the most emotional press box moment he’s ever experienced. Nineteen years after a devastating plane crash claimed the lives of their national squad, Zambia rose from the ashes to claim continental glory. This episode retraces their journey - from the tragedy off the coast of Gabon in 1993, the rebuilding efforts led by legendary captain Kalusha Bwalya, right through to their unforgettable victory on penalties in the very same country that witnessed their darkest hour. 00:00 The Final Match: A Battle Beyond the Pitch 00:15 Introduction to an Inspiring and Tragic Football Story 00:36 Zambia's Uplifting Victory After Tragedy 02:26 The 1993 Plane Crash: A National Tragedy 04:37 Zambia's Football Rise in the Late 80s 08:15 The Aftermath of the Crash and the Struggle for Resources 18:42 Rebuilding the Team: The Role of Kaia and New Coaches 24:01 The 2012 African Cup of Nations Journey 25:06 The Quarterfinals and Beyond 27:01 Gabon vs. Mali: A Penalty Heartbreak 27:30 Unexpected Journey to Bata 31:12 Ghana's Complacency and Zambia's Rise 38:38 The Emotional Beach Ceremony 40:27 The Dramatic Final Against Ivory Coast 51:10 Zambia's Historic Victory 52:16 Reflecting on the Significance Hosted on Acast. Ivory Coast won AFCON! Managerless, thrashed by Equatorial Guinea earlier in the tournament, and with Sebastien Haller grabbing the winner after overcoming cancer barely 12 months ago, last night really was one of the great ‘that’s what football do to ya’ moments! What we want to know is… does the manager they sacked after the group stages still get a place on the victory bus? Marcus, Luke and Pete discuss the weekend’s two big continental cup finals and – unfortunately for West Ham fans – plenty of Prem action, too. Luke “inadvertently” starts a debate with some Hammers, Pete launches his bid to be new dictator of the United Kingdom, and we discover that Ivan Toney has a new Captain Tom tattoo. Plus, Joel Glazer finds a new role at Manchester United as a ‘filthy magician’… Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, and email us here: [email protected].
