Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone – ‘We attack better than we defend, goals are the difference’

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has told the press that his side showed personality in order to be able to get back into the game against Barcelona, having gone two goals down in the first half. Ademola Lookman’s goal put Los Colchoneros back in front on aggregate, and they won out 3-2 eventually. “It was a robbed match” – Raphinha fumes over Barcelona exit to Atletico Madrid

Barcelona star Raphinha did not take his side’s exit from the Champions League lying down. Atletico Madrid ran out 3-2 winners on aggregate against the Catalan giants, after a 2-1 loss at the Metropolitano that was sufficient to take them through to the semi-finals. Raphinha, who did not feature in the tie due to injury, […] The post “It was a robbed match” – Raphinha fumes over Barcelona exit to Atletico Madrid appeared first on Football España.

Barcelona’s Raphinha blasts referees over ‘robbery’ in UCL clash vs Atletico Madrid

Following their elimination, Barcelona star Raphinha blasted the officiating, calling their Champions League quarterfinal exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid a "robbery." Barcelona‘s hopes of winning the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League were extinguished on Tuesday after falling short of overturning the aggregate deficit despite a 2-1 win at the Metropolitano. The controversy surrounding the tie against Atletico Madrid, however, is far from over, with star forward Raphinha pulling no punches in calling out what he described as a “robbery” by the referees across the entire quarterfinal series. Raphinha had been one of the most significant absentees for Barcelona after picking up an injury during the March international break with Brazil, ruling him out of both legs against Atletico. Although he traveled to Madrid with his teammates to show his support, he made his feelings about the officiating crystal clear when addressing the media in the mixed zone. “This match was a robbery. The refereeing had many issues; the decisions he made are unbelievable. Atletico committed I don’t know how many fouls, and the referee didn’t show them a single yellow card. I really want to understand his fear of Barca actually making it through the tie,” Raphinha said. Among the most consequential decisions that went against the Blaugrana were the red cards shown to Pau Cubarsi in the first leg and Eric Garcia in the second, though both dismissals left little room for argument, with each player having fouled as the last man. Raphinha: “Para mí fue un partido robado” 🗣️#UCLxDAZN pic.twitter.com/t2AqCVWbyh — DAZN Fútbol (@DAZNFutbol) April 14, 2026 One of the more contentious moments from the first leg arose when Marc Pubill appeared to handle the ball after Juan Musso restarted play from a goal kick, only for the officials to wave away the appeals on the grounds that the ball was not yet in play. On the foul count, Atletico committed 15 compared to Barcelona’s eight in the second leg, yet the Colchoneros escaped without a single yellow card on the night. For Raphinha, the accumulation of those decisions across both matches points to something more than isolated errors. “It was tough, especially when you see that you have to put in triple the effort just to win the match. I understand making a mistake in one match, but in two consecutive games?” the Brazilian added. Musso responds to Raphinha Raphinha’s pointed comments did not take long to make their way around the mixed zone, and Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso was given the chance to respond. The Argentine, who was outstanding across both legs, was having none of it. “You can’t talk about a robbery. I understand what anyone might say. I respect everyone’s opinion, but let’s not frame the series as if it were a robbery, because that wasn’t the case. We won it on the pitch; we won 2-0 away. Being the last man in football is a red card, unfortunately,” Musso said, directly addressing the dismissals of Cubarsi and Garcia. Having made seven saves in each leg, Musso was a central figure in Atletico’s progression through the Champions League quarterfinals, and he made a point of acknowledging the quality of the opponent while firmly rejecting Raphinha’s characterization. “They are a team we respect a lot and one that truly motivates us to play against. They are a great team, but I think talking about a robbery is madness,” he concluded.

UCL Debrief: Liverpool knocked out & Atleti down Barcelona

Did Arne Slot let Liverpool down as the Premier League champions were knocked out by PSG at Anfield? Or did the Reds show positive signs for the future with a much more energetic and competitive performance than in last week’s first leg in Paris? Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, ex-Premier League winger Andros Townsend and French football journalist Julien Laurens join Ian Dennis and Kelly Cates to dissect a thrilling night of Champions League action. As well as Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to PSG (4-0 on aggregate), Atletico Madrid progressed with a memorable victory over Barcelona, 3-2 on aggregate. Shearer reveals “exactly what Liverpool have been missing” against PSG tonight

Liverpool have crashed to a 2-0 defeat at Anfield against PSG in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. After losing the first leg 2-0 away from home, they were hoping to overturn the deficit at home, but the defending European champions have managed to get the job done at Anfield, and they […] The post Shearer reveals “exactly what Liverpool have been missing” against PSG tonight appeared first on CaughtOffside.

How Liverpool’s win, draw, or loss against PSG today could affect the UEFA Champions League bracket

After losing 2–0 to PSG, Liverpool are looking to stage a comeback in the second leg of the 2025–26 Champions League quarterfinals. However, the Reds not only need a win, but they are also forced into a specific scenario. Here, we will analyze the three possible outcomes of today’s match. Despite being defeated in the first leg, Liverpool still keep their hopes alive for a comeback against PSG in the second leg of the 2025–26 Champions League quarterfinals. Far from being a simple task, the English side not only need a win, as the 2–0 defeat shapes their path forward. With this in mind, the Reds require a specific scenario to secure their place in the semifinals of the tournament. Paris Saint-Germain come in as clear favorites to beat the Reds. Not only are they coming off a dominant performance in the first leg, but they also have their key players in top form. In addition, coach Luis Enrique has imposed his authority on the game, relying on a high press that suffocates Liverpool in their build-up. Moreover, Désiré Doué and Vitinha are expected to be decisive in securing another victory in today’s match. Unlike the first leg, coach Arne Slot could opt for a more offensive approach, looking to make the difference through Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai. In addition, they will aim to assert greater control in midfield by introducing Florian Wirtz to enhance their creative output, linking up with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch. With a comeback needed, Hugo Ekitike must play a key role in front of goal. How could Liverpool’s win against PSG affect the UEFA Champions League bracket? Even though Liverpool secure a victory over PSG, they would not immediately secure a place in the 2025–26 Champions League semifinals. Having lost 2–0 in the first leg, the Reds would need to win by a three-goal margin against the French side. If they manage to do so, they would face the winner of the tie between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. In that case, the English side would surpass their performances from the last three seasons in the competition. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia of Paris Saint-Germain goes around Giorgi Mamardashvili of Liverpool to score a goal. How could Liverpool’s draw against PSG affect the UEFA Champions League bracket? Being a two-leg format, Liverpool would be eliminated immediately if they draw against PSG. With a 2–0 deficit on aggregate, the Reds would have no way of reaching the Champions League semifinals. If they manage to defeat PSG by a two-goal margin, they would level the aggregate score, opening the door to compete for a place in the next round of the tournament. As this is the second leg, a winner would have to be decided in extra time, with two periods of 15 minutes each. If there is still no winner, the match would go to a penalty shootout, where a definitive winner would be determined to face the winner of the tie between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. How could Liverpool’s defeat against PSG affect the UEFA Champions League bracket? If Liverpool were to lose to PSG, they would be automatically eliminated from the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. This would mark the fourth consecutive season that the Reds have failed to reach the tournament’s final. The situation is quite different for the French side, as they would be reaching the semifinals for the third consecutive season and are favorites to advance to the final and seek their second consecutive title in the tournament.

Football Daily | Arsenal take a ‘punch in the face’ but will it really be a knockout blow?

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! They say that if you’re expecting a kick in the swingers but only receive a punch in the face, you can probably consider it a good result. Because he probably wasn’t expecting his Arsenal players to ship a hoof to the collective crown jewels from Bournemouth on Saturday, Mikel Arteta understandably failed to find any positives as he told one post-match interviewer after another that his listless side’s thoroughly deserved defeat felt like “a big punch on the face”. Whatever about their toothlessness up front, devotion to sideways and backwards passes and an at times almost comical inability to beat the Bournemouth press, the manner in which Arsenal’s players seemed genuinely paralysed by terror will be of the greatest concern to their equally terrified fans. Whether the sight of an extremely agitated Spaniard bouncing around his technical area like Basil Fawlty thrashing his Austin 1100 with a tree branch does much to alleviate the cloud of anxiety that has descended upon the Emirates Stadium is open to extremely one-sided debate. Manchester City’s luminous monstrosity of a kit at Stamford Bridge made them look like 11 operatives in search of their missing bin lorry. ‘Didn’t help’ – Viktor Gyokeres gives bizarre excuse for Arsenal’s loss to Bournemouth

Viktor Gyokeres suggested a dry Emirates pitch was partly to blame for Arsenal's disappointing 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.

Arsenal verdict: Gunners never believed they could turn it around against Bournemouth – what an absolute disaster

WHAT an absolute disaster for Arsenal. Alex Scott, the best player on the pitch, scored the winner as Bournemouth grabbed a 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium. Eli Junior Kroupi put the Cherries ahead and Viktor Gyokeres equalised from the penalty spot, but no complaints from Arsenal. They were really poor and it just proved,...

Champions League Takeaway: Bayern Finally Win at the Bernabeu & Arsenal's Smash and Grab on Sporting

Hello Rank Squad! It's the first Champions League Takeaway of the week, looking back at Tuesday's action from the First Legs of the Quarter Finals - where both away teams found a way to win, albeit in very different fashions. At the Bernabeu, Bayern won the European Clasico, triumphing at the Bernabeu for the first time in 25 years - it's been a while since Élber scored the only goal in May 2001! This was a classic in many ways, living up to the billing, and both teams have reasons in the aftermath for both happiness and regret, given the way that this played out. Bayern were much the better team, and will be a little frustrated they didn't kill the game, but it's still a win at one of the toughest places to go in Europe; whilst Real Madrid will be frustrated by the defeat but also pleased with the fact that they're still in this given at one point they felt on the verge of collapse. In Part Two we head to Lisbon for a different type of away win - this time by Arsenal, who needed a late Kai Havertz strike to smash and grab their way to an important win at the Jose Alvalade against Sporting. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't much fun to watch, but it was a crucial win for Mikel Arteta and company in a place where Sporting have been absolutely sensational this season. Sporting will have regrets on this one, but a combination of David Raya in outrageous form and some profligate finishing have left them a mountain to climb at the Emirates. It's Ranks! Unethical Things Done to a Crude Effigy

It was a terminal week for Manchester City's Champions League hopes, with elimination at the hands of Real Madrid (including the hand of Bernardo Silva if we're being strictly accurate about it all). Meanwhile, the team's hopes of winning the Premier League title were dealt a blow after they failed to keep pace with leaders Arsenal with a 1-1 draw at West Ham. David Mooney is joined by City fans James Faulkner and, from the MCFC Lads podcast and social pages, Luke Stanley. They discuss the performances and the results this week... because there is a difference in how each is perceived... and they look ahead to what will undoubtedly be a tough test against Arsenal in the League Cup final on Sunday. Arsenal fan Michael Keshani returns to the show to give his thoughts on how Mikel Arteta's side are playing. Are they as good as previous Arsenal teams and are they even good to watch? We get into the narratives around the league leaders, plus look at how Sunday's final could impact the remainder of the title race, however unlikely it is that City close the gap at this stage. On top of all of that, we've roped in Chris Higginbottom and, from the City Ramble podcast, Amos Murphy to discuss City's best fluked goals. That's after Bernardo admitted that his strike at the London Stadium wasn't quite as intentional as it might have been. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Lennon's Late Heroics Save Reds from Crushing Wigan Defeat at Oakwell

Barnsley 1-1 Wigan Athletic League One - Tuesday 17th March A point salvaged in the dying embers, but let’s be honest — this one should have been more than a dramatic draw and less than a rescue act. Barnsley did enough across the night to suggest they ought to have taken all three points, yet still found themselves staring at defeat until Charlie Lennon arrived deep into added time to spare Oakwell a long, muttering walk home. Wigan had spells of control, yes, but this was not some one-sided exercise in damage limitation. Barnsley created the better openings, struck the woodwork, and forced the sort of saves that usually come with the expectation of reward. Instead, a familiar defensive lapse left them chasing the game, and only a final burst of persistence kept the evening from becoming another self-inflicted wound. Early Warning Signs Go Unheeded If we’re being fair, Barnsley started brightly enough. There was intent in the pressing, movement in the final third, and a sense that Wigan’s back line could be got at if the Reds were patient enough to work the openings. The problem, as ever, was turning those encouraging passages into the sort of ruthless edge that settles a match before it drifts into anxiety. Wigan saw plenty of the ball in the early stages, but it was far from one-way traffic. Barnsley looked the more dangerous when they broke with purpose, and there were enough warning signs for the visitors to know this was not going to be a quiet evening. Oakwell sensed it too. The frustration had not yet arrived; for once, there was at least the faint outline of a football match we might actually enjoy. Taylor’s Moment of Class Punishes Poor Positioning The goal, when it arrived, felt less like the inevitable outcome of pressure and more like the sort of defensive slip that has stalked Barnsley all season. One moment of looseness, one passage where the structure softened, and suddenly Taylor had the space to pick his spot and punish it. That was the irritation of it. Barnsley had not been suffocated. They had not been camped on the edge of their own area, hanging on for breath. They had simply switched off at the wrong moment and paid for it. The finish was sharp, clinical, and exactly the sort of thing that turns a decent enough half into another chase. Frustration Mounts as Chances Go Begging If there was encouragement for the Reds, it lay in the fact that the response was immediate and substantial. Barnsley created enough chances across the evening to win the match outright. One effort clipped the woodwork. Another forced a proper save. A third brought the kind of collective intake of breath that tells you everyone in the ground thought the net was about to ripple. That, more than anything, defined the mood. Barnsley were not absent from the game. They were in it, pushing, probing, and creating. But the final action remained just loose enough, just rushed enough, or just unlucky enough to keep the scoreboard leaning the wrong way. Lennon’s Last-Gasp Heroics Save the Day As the clock wound down, the possibility of leaving empty-handed became more ridiculous and more believable in equal measure. Ridiculous because Barnsley had created too much to get nothing. Believable because this season has had a nasty habit of punishing every wasted moment with interest. Then came Lennon. Deep into added time, with the ground somewhere between resignation and one last desperate appeal to fate, the defender arrived to force home the equaliser and rescue a point that had felt both deserved and maddeningly overdue. The finish was scruffy in the way late goals often are, but nobody in red was asking for style points by then. The release around Oakwell was instant. Not jubilation exactly. More relief. The sort that comes when a game you should never really have been losing is dragged back from the brink before it can ruin your week. Team Line-ups: Barnsley (4 - 2 - 3 - 1): O. Goodman, J. Shepherd, E. O'Connell, M. de Gevigney, C. O'Keeffe, P. Kelly, L. Connell, R. Cleary, V. Yoganathan, S. Banks, D. McGoldrick Subs: J. Bland, T. Bradshaw, K. Flavell, C. Lennon, N. Ogbeta, A. Phillips, T. Watson Goals: C. Lennon (90+6') Yellow Cards: V. Yoganathan (50'), L. Connell (75'), M. de Gevigney (45+1') Wigan Athletic (3 - 4 - 1 - 2): S. Tickle, L. Chapman, J. Kerr, W. Aimson, F. Murray, C. Wright, J. Weir, R. Borges Rodrigues, O. Moxon, C. Saydee, J. Taylor Subs: H. Bettoni, D. Costelloe, C. McManaman, L. Robinson, T. Savin, M. Smith, C. Vickers Goals: J. Taylor (29') Yellow Cards: O. Moxon (57'), C. Wright (88') Match Stats: Statistic Barnsley Wigan Athletic Possession 64.1% 35.9% Shots 14 16 Shots on target 6 4 Goalkeeper saves 3 5 Aerial duels won 28 10 Fouls committed 11 9 Corners 11 5 Final Whistle Here’s the problem with this being framed as a dramatic rescue: it lets Barnsley off too easily. The equaliser was deserved, but so too was the frustration that came before it. This was a game in which the Reds created enough to win, showed enough attacking intent to feel encouraged, and still needed the final seconds to salvage what should really have been a more routine outcome. Wigan will point to their organisation and the moments where they kept Barnsley at arm’s length. Fair enough. But the better openings fell to the home side, and the balance of the evening suggested Barnsley had more than enough in them to take three points if the details had been handled with greater care. So it finishes as one of those nights that leaves everybody half-satisfied and fully irritated. A point is better than none. Lennon’s intervention matters. The pressure was real, the response was genuine, and there is at least something to be said for refusing to let the game die. But this was not a smash-and-grab draw. It was a match Barnsley had enough chances to win and enough lapses to nearly throw away entirely. Same old tension. Slightly different ending.

Frustration at The Etihad as City are held to a draw by Forest. Semenyo opened the scoring, Gibbs-White hit back, Rodri looked to have won it, only for Anderson to level again.
