France national team manager Didier Deschamps has sent a heartfelt message of support to Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike after a serious injury ended his World Cup hopes. Ekitike has suffered a suspected Achilles injury, which could likely put him out of action for the next nine months, with Deschamps admitting it’s a “huge blow” for […] The post “Huge blow…” – Manager sends message to Liverpool star who’s set to miss World Cup appeared first on CaughtOffside.

Set to face Sporting CP in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, Arsenal might be dealing once again with the absence of star Bukayo Saka. Arsenal host the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium this Wednesday, looking to protect a slim lead and advance to the final four. While the Gunners enter as heavy favorites, star winger Bukayo Saka has been entirely left out of the Gunners’ squad. Bukayo Saka won’t be featuring in the return leg against Sporting CP due to injury. The England international was widely expected to return for Saturday’s fixture against Bournemouth but failed to make the squad; his subsequent absence from Tuesday’s training session further dims the prospects of him playing a role in this continental decider. Manager Mikel Arteta was noncommittal when asked if Saka or defender Jurrien Timber might return to the fold, offering only that “maybe one of them” could be involved. However, when pressed on the nature of the winger’s injury and its recent persistence, the Spaniard provided a bit more clarity for the worried Emirates faithful. “It’s something that he was carrying for a while. It was an Achilles issue,” Arteta said. “It’s progression but hopefully it’s going to be a matter of days and not weeks. But he has to see when the load is more how he responds to that kind of progression,” he added. Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber of Arsenal. Arsenal navigating a fitness crisis Saka isn’t the only concern for a depleted Arsenal squad; Tuesday’s training session raised red flags regarding several other key contributors. Missing from the main group were midfield anchors Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, along with defender Riccardo Calafiori. While Rice has reportedly recovered and should be available for selection, significant questions remain over whether Odegaard and Calafiori are fit enough to start. This personnel crunch may force Arteta to lean on his depth as he looks to defend a narrow 1-0 aggregate advantage in the Champions League clash. Confirmed lineups for Arsenal and Sporting CP Arsenal’s confirmed lineup (4-2-3-1): David Raya; Cristhian Mosquera, William Saliba, Gabriel, Piero Hincapie; Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice; Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, Gabriel Martinelli; Viktor Gyokeres. Head coach: Mikel Arteta. Sporting CP’s confirmed lineup (4-2-3-1): Rui Silva; Eduardo Quaresma, Ousmane Diomande, Goncalo Inacio, Maximiliano Araujo; Morten Hjulmand, Hidemasa Morita; Geny Catamo, Francisco Trincao, Pedro Goncalves; Luis Javier Suarez. Head coach: Rui Borges.

The road to the 2026 World Cup was always expected to test France in new ways, but few imagined that Hugo Ekitike would become the center of a devastating late setback just weeks before the tournament. The road to the 2026 World Cup was always expected to test France in new ways, but few imagined that Hugo Ekitike would become the center of a devastating late setback just weeks before the tournament. France will enter driven by the scars of the 2022 final, where it fell short in a dramatic clash that still lingers in memory. Ranked third in the world and placed on a favorable path in the bracket, the national team once again looks like a serious contender aiming for a third world title. With stars like 2018 World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe and 2025 Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele leading the charge, belief inside the camp remains strong. The national team arrives with a blend of experience and attacking firepower that few can match. N’Golo Kante has returned to orchestrate play from midfield, while the defensive core brings years of elite European experience into the tournament. This generation believes it has unfinished business on the world stage, especially after coming so close in Qatar. That confidence has now been shaken by a major setback. Ekitike suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during a Champions League clash between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, an injury that immediately raised fears about his availability. PSG maçında aşil tendonu kopan Hugo Ekitike, 9 ay formasından uzak kalacak. (L’Equipe)pic.twitter.com/QJm8QTjNZh — Meritking News TR (@mknewstr) April 15, 2026 The devastating blow confirmed The uncertainty surrounding the striker has soon turned into confirmation of the worst possible outcome. “Carried off on a stretcher… Hugo Ekitike suffered a rupture of his right Achilles tendon,” reported L’Equipe, leaving little room for optimism. As per the report, the injury immediately rules him out of the 2026 World Cup and potentially sidelines him for seven to nine months. The incident occurred during a high-stakes clash between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, where the striker collapsed without contact. “It doesn’t look good for Hugo. It’s especially difficult for him because you never want to get injured, especially at this time of the season,” admitted the Reds’ boss Arne Slot, reflecting the mood inside the club. What this means for France’s tactical setup France’s attacking structure has been one of its greatest strengths, blending pace, creativity, and finishing quality. Ekitike had emerged as a valuable option, contributing 17 goals in 45 appearances at club level and earning his place in the national team setup. His absence forces the coaching staff to rethink rotations and attacking combinations ahead of the tournament. Hugo Ekitike of Liverpool holds his ankle as he appears to be injured Despite the setback, France still enters the competition with strong depth and experience. The team remains on a favorable path in the tournament draw, avoiding early clashes with giants like Spain and Argentina. However, maintaining squad fitness and adapting to injuries will now be even more critical for Didier Deschamps and his squad. Who steps into the spotlight? Since it’s safe to say that Ekitike is officially ruled out, attention now turns to who could fill the void in the national team. According to Le Parisien, Randal Kolo Muani has emerged as the leading candidate to take his place, largely due to the trust he maintains within the coaching staff. His international experience could prove decisive despite mixed club form. Randal Kolo Muani of France controls the ball Other options remain firmly in contention. Christopher Nkunku offers versatility and technical quality, while Jean-Philippe Mateta has impressed with his efficiency in limited appearances for the national team. Each brings a different profile, leaving the final decision open as the tournament approaches.

By Martin Graham Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his concern after Hugo Ekitike was forced off with what appeared to be a serious injury during Tuesday’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The French forward went down without contact around the 30-minute mark and required a stretcher after clutching his ankle in clear discomfort. […]

The only injury concern for Manchester City to come out of their 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday was the hamstring injury sustained by Nico O’Reilly. TOTTENHAM duo Antonin Kinsky and Cristian Romero were involved in a terrifying collision during their defeat at Sunderland. Relegation battlers Spurs were already 1-0 down after Nordi Mukiele's deflected opener at the Stadium of Light. Lautaro Martinez suffered another injury, keeping Argentina concerned ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With a little over two months to go before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Argentina are paying close attention to one of their stars, Lautaro Martinez, who suffered a new injury this week that will prevent him from returning to action in the short term. “Lautaro Martinez aggravated his soleus muscle injury,” journalist Gaston Edul reported Friday via his official X account. The update, however, includes a positive detail compared to his previous muscle issue: “Not as serious.” The striker has played just one official match in the last two months. In mid-February, he was sidelined by a muscle injury that forced him to miss Inter Milan’s UEFA Champions League playoff clash against Bodo/Glimt, as well as five Serie A matches and one Coppa Italia fixture. After recovering from that setback last week, Martinez started in Inter Milan’s 5–2 win over AS Roma in Serie A on Sunday, where he scored twice. However, he has now suffered another setback that will force him to rest again. “He will be out for a few more days,” Edul added on X. Lionel Scaloni, Head Coach of Argentina. Argentina closely monitoring Lautaro Martinez’s situation Although the 2026 FIFA World Cup is still over two months away, Argentina are closely monitoring Lautaro Martinez’s situation. The striker has been a key piece of Lionel Scaloni’s squad throughout his tenure as head coach and is expected to have a place in the 26-man roster heading to North America this summer. However, the fact that Martinez is dealing with recurring physical issues so close to the tournament is a growing concern. In fact, he was left out of Scaloni’s latest squad during the March international break, when Argentina defeated Mauritania and Zambia in Buenos Aires. Lautaro Martinez still has unfinished business at the World Cup Despite playing a decisive role for Argentina in recent years—such as scoring the winning goal in the 2024 Copa America final against Colombia—Lautaro Martinez did not have the same impact during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup title run in Qatar. He started as the team’s main striker in that tournament, but an ankle injury prevented him from being at full fitness. After just two matches, he lost his place in the starting lineup to Julian Alvarez. That led to a disappointing campaign, as he failed to score during the entire World Cup. For that reason, North America 2026 carries special importance for Martinez, who will be looking to settle that unfinished business and deliver for Argentina on soccer’s biggest stage.

Pol Ballús, Julien Laurens, Seb Stafford Bloor and James Horncastle are alongside Jimbo for your weekly fix of continental action. La Liga is getting rather interesting all of a sudden, as Barcelona fell to a shock 2-1 defeat by Las Palmas - their first victory away at Barca since 1971! Real Madrid took full advantage and bounced back from their midweek Champions League disappointment at Anfield with a 2-0 win over Getafe. It means they’re just a point behind Hansi Flick’s side with a game in hand. But who’s that in third and just a point further behind… a resurgent Atlético Madrid?! Atalanta are showing they mean business in Serie A this season as they recorded their eighth straight win in all competitions with a 2-0 victory at Roma on Monday night. They’re just a point behind leaders Napoli, who were 1-0 winners at Torino thanks to Scott McTominay’s first half strike. But there were scary scenes in Fiorentina as their match with Inter was suspended and then abandoned when Edoardo Bove collapsed in the 16th minute. Thankfully the news since has been positive after receiving treatment in hospital. It ended 1-1 in Der Klassiker between Dortmund and Bayern on Saturday evening, but there’s concern for Harry Kane who went off early with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Eintracht Frankfurt were big 4-0 winners in Heidenheim on Sunday to close the gap on Bayern at the top of the table to four points. And in Ligue 1, PSG’s poor week continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Nantes - the first time they’ve come from behind to take a point all season. But despite dropping points Luis Enrique’s side are seven points clear at the top of the table - and have Marseille to thank following their 2-1 win over Monaco. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moment of the weekend and latest on Edoardo Bove - (00.45) • PART 2: Bundesliga review - Dortmund and Bayern share the spoils as Leipzig’s horror season continues (13.00) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - Disgruntlement in Paris as PSG held (26.40) • PART 4: La Liga review - Barcelona’s mini slump continues while Real and Atleti close the gap (37.40) • PART 5: Serie A review - Napoli’s slender win keeps them ahead of a charging Atalanta (50.30) Hosted on Acast. Pedri Gonzalez’s harm blow in Spain’s win over Germany has set off alert chimes in Catalonia, particularly with Hansi Flick’s to begin with pre-season fair around the corner. The German strategist will supervise his training at the begining session with Barcelona in the coming week. Whereas players on duty with the national team were set to connect the camp late for sure, Pedri’s harm takes off the midfielder in question for the whole pre-season tour. Earlier this week, Spain reveals that the Spanish midfielder had facing a grade 2 inner lateral sprain in his left knee and set his recovery period at around six weeks. With the coming season set to start in mid-August, there is concern over Pedri’s possibility for it. Likely to miss the season opener Barcelona are set to bolt horns with Valencia in their season opener for the 2024-25 season of La Liga. The match, as it stands, is set to kick off late on August 18. Exactly six weeks left to start the Blaugranas’ clash at Mestalla, and SPORT explains that Pedri has it really complicated to complete the recovery in time for the starting match of the season. Needless to say, this is a critical blow for Flick as he will be without the team’s key midfielder not as it were for pre-season but moreover the opening stage of the coming campaign. Need for change Pedri has battled to stay fit after his starting season at Barcelona and has demonstrated to be hardly helpless to physical setbacks. The later blow comes as the most recent on the youngster’s list of injured players and will be smashing, considering he was fair returning to his best form. As Flick plans for life at Barcelona, the chief must to begin with attention to up the stake in terms of physical arrangement, particularly for Pedri. Given Flick’s involvement at Bayern Munich, there is positive thinking that the coach can discover the right equation.
