Today we take a look back at a game of genuine historical importance in European football history. On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by The Independent’s Miguel Delaney to discuss the 1963 European Cup final between Milan and Benfica. This pivotal moment in the history of the European Cup cannot be understated; it represented two dominant teams at opposite ends of their respective cycles. Milan arrived as purveyors of a free-scoring, but still pragmatic, catenaccio and regarded themselves as significant underdogs. But, with their manager Nereo Rocco’s pre-match antics on the bus helping to lighten the mood, two goals from José Altafini denied Benfica their third consecutive European Cup. This was an early example of modernity in football tactics; a team winning on the strength of a tactical system with eleven components, rather than relying on eleven individuals beating their opposite man. Miguel's article for The Blizzard about this match is available here: https://www.theblizzard.co.uk/article/ac-milan-2-benfica-1 For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one! ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Greetings OTCers! It's time for yet another episode of our European football show and today Luke and Andy is joined by Spanish football expert David Cartlidge to discuss all the big stories from around the continent. This week we look ahead to a big derby in Spain as Atletico, beset with muscle injury worries, head to the Bernabeu. What's become of El Cholo and his team this season? Meanwhile, in Italy, there's a race on for the top four, but Torino most certainly aren't in it. Roma, Atalanta and perhaps even Milan are though. Can Zlatan do the unthinkable and help this Milan side actually achieve something? Yep, there's all this and more - Leipzig's Ralf Rangnick getting annoyed at a celebrity barber, Hatem Ben Arfa making an appearance alongside the original Ronaldo, and Steven Bergwijn rocking up at Spurs. Welcome to the first of our brand new ‘Greatest Games’ series, in association with The Blizzard. Every Saturday, Marcus Speller, Jonathan Wilson and a guest from the world of football discuss some of the most significant matches in football history. First up it’s our continental compatriot, James Horncastle! James arrives to discuss one of the most infamous ties in European football history, where Milan took on Red Star Belgrade in the 1988/89 European Cup. With Milan looking like it was destined to be eliminated in the second leg, a thick fog totally enveloped the Marakana and forced the referee to abandon the game. James recounts how the visibility was so poor that the commentator couldn’t follow the flight of the ball and Milan’s Pietro Paolo Virdis was sent off 15 minutes before his manager Arrigo Sacchi realised. This dramatic delay gave way to one of the all-time great European ties, as 50,000 fans descended on the stadium to see their beloved Crvena zvezda take on the European powerhouses for the second time in two days.
