Among Adam, Charlie and Dave's selections are the enduring fallacy of relegation-threatened teams “fighting for their lives”, the theory behind the greatest lower-body aesthetic in football history, the haggard goalnets of midweek 5-a-side and the childish envy when new signings score on their debuts for your team's rivals. Mailbag: Would the European Super League improve English football?

Our listener Christian has a theory: could a European Super League actually improve English football? Marcus, Luke and Andy debate the merits of that suggestion on today’s Mailbag. Elsewhere, Luke explains why someone should make a biopic all about Paolo Maldini’s tennis career and there's agreement that humiliation is the key to improving players' conduct in football! FRP Showcase: Back from the Brink - Episode 1

Today’s Football Ramble Presents showcase is one close to our hearts. Last year, the European Super League crashed into our lives. On the first anniversary of that fateful announcement, Andy Brassell and a host of journalists, fans and familiar Ramble voices tell the story of what happened, how supporters fought back, and wonder what the future holds. In the first of three episodes, we traced the long road to April 2021. From the origins of the Super League in the 80s, to the scarcely believable backroom manoeuvrings inside UEFA last year, we spoke to the journalists who first broke the story to understand the motivations and miscalculations that finally made Europe’s biggest clubs cash in their most valuable bargaining chip. The ESL battle is won, but the war for football is not over

What were we all worried about?! The European Super League is written off just 48 hours after it began, with the English clubs offering all the remorse of a captured Bond villain. Daft little tournament, silly owners, etc… Marcus, Vish and Pete are here to celebrate the fans’ victory, but stress the need for further action in a bid to improve football for everyone – not just the elite. We also bid farewell to Ed Woodward, praise the actions of Jordan Henderson and Pep Guardiola and try to work out where the game goes from here. Oh, and rumours are already linking José Mourinho to the Celtic job, so there’s that. 2021.04.19 - Away Goals Rule

Quiet weekend, wasn't it? Kris and Phil look back over a sometimes baffling week, in which both PSGs can thank the away goals rule for their progression to the Champions League semi-finals - the men after a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich at the Parc des Prince, the women after knocking out seven-time trophy winners Lyon with a 2-1 away win. As well as that there were a couple of five-goal thrillers featuring very late winners in Ligue 1, as Kris' Lorient succumbed to OM at the Velodrome 3-2 with a double from Pol Lirola cancelling out ditto from Terem Moffi, and PSG v Saint-Etienne being probably the most exciting last 15 minutes of the season ending in a 96th minute winner from Mauro Icardi as the hosts also won 3-2. We have a midweek Coupe de France round for the quarter-finals and an interesting weekend coming up which finishes with Lyon v Lille in a key game for the title race. Also - yes, we went there - the recently announced 'European Super League' (other super leagues are available) causes sadness, anger, confusion, and Phil talking about EU corporate law, even though no French teams are involved in it...yet.

Plus, the Podcast begins with a review of the 5 games played so far in Gameweek 32 and what the impact of the FA cup results means for FPL managers loking to manage strategy for a possible Double Gameweek 35 and Blank Gameweek 36... ____________________________________________ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/planetfpl Web: www.planetfpl.com Twitter: @PlanetFPLPod (James) / @sujanshah (Suj) Facebook: www.facebook.com/PlanetFPL Instagram: @planetfpl You Tube: www.youtube.com/planetfpl Learn more about your ad choices. Creatively dull people

Jimbo, Carl Anka, Daniel Storey and Matt Davies-Adams discuss a weekend that could be seismic for football in this country and around the continent. The Premier League’s “Big Six” clubs announce their intentions to start a new European Super League. On the pitch, Leicester will play Chelsea in the FA Cup final, as Thomas Tuchel ends Man City’s quadruple hopes. In the Premier League, West Ham are beaten at St James Park as injuries threaten to damage their top 4 hopes. And the same could be true for Spurs with Harry Kane limping off. Barcelona top the Deloitte Money League but still face financial peril

Mark Chapman and The Athletic's Matt Slater assess the current state of football's financial landscape as the effects of the pandemic start to take a greater hold on the game. We speak to Deloitte's Tim Bridge after the firm published their annual money league this week with Barcelona sitting at the top on revenues of £627 million, but in the very same week we've seen headlines in Spain suggesting Barca are on the bring of bankruptcy. So how can a club that makes so much money be in so much debt? How badly have clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool and Spurs felt the pinch as we approach a year without fans in stadiums? We're also joined by Roger Bell and John Purcell from football finance analysts Vysble to look at the bigger picture for football's uncertain financial future. What do the creeping levels of American investment in English football mean for the future of our game? Does it all just lead us back to the eternally looming prospect of a European super league?
