On Tuesday night PSG lost for first time since Kylian Mbappe left for Real Madrid having started the season seven games unbeaten prior to their visit to London. They were also without Ousmane Dembele against Arsenal, the player was dropped for disciplinary reasons. So can PSG succeed without superstars? Ayo Akinwolere is joined by Tom Williams, author of Va Va Voom, the modern history of French Football and Pierre-Etienne Minonzio from L'Equipe to discuss PSG's start to the new season, the role of Luis Enrique in their re-styling as well as which young players amongst their ranks could blossom into being their next talisman. The Athletic's Peter Rutzler also drops in with his view having been at the Emirates while Mike Stavrou also catches up with the travelling PSG supporters. Paris Saint-Germain surprised many during the summer transfer window by not finding a direct replacement for Kylian Mbappé (25) after his free transfer to Real Madrid. However, with Bradley Barcola’s (22) impressive start to the season, PSG may have validated their decision to skip signing another left-winger. Barcola, a former Lyon player, joined the Ligue 1 champions in the summer of 2023. Fans of Lyon were puzzled by his choice, given the fierce competition in Luis Enrique's forward line. Mbappé was seen as nearly irreplaceable in Paris, and with Barcola's preference for playing on the left, it seemed likely he would see limited playing time. Initially, that concern proved accurate, as the Lyon academy graduate struggled to secure a spot in the starting lineup early on. However, he gradually established himself as a reliable option next to Mbappé before the conclusion of the previous season. Now, with the France captain having moved to Spain, Barcola has emerged as a key player for PSG this season. Could he be the solution to filling the void left by Mbappé? Having started as a striker at Lyon's youth academy, scoring has always been part of Barcola's game, a facet he aimed to enhance. While he showed effectiveness in attacking positions during his time at PSG and Lyon, he often played a creative role rather than a finishing one, netting 9 goals in 51 appearances during his first two Ligue 1 seasons. This season, however, Barcola seems to have elevated his goal-scoring prowess. As of now, he leads the league with 6 goals in his first 6 matches. Despite starting every game, he hasn't played the full 90 minutes each time, totaling 374 minutes of action. His strike rate translates to a goal every 62 minutes, placing him among the elite in Europe. Since emerging at Lyon, Barcola has not lacked confidence, but the added responsibility this season has appeared to unlock new potential. He has assumed a leadership role in the attack, embodying the concept of leading by example through his performances. With remarkable skill and impressive dribbling, Barcola creates spectacular moments on the field. Defensively, his tireless work ethic and effectiveness in regaining possession make him a coach's ideal player. Compiling all his attributes, the 21-year-old has become essential this season, making the departure of Mbappé much more manageable for PSG.

Bayern Munich has reportedly given up on persuading Alphonso Davies, a target for Real Madrid, to extend his stay with the club. The Bundesliga team has made occasional attempts to communicate with Davies' representatives over the past few months but has achieved no progress towards a contract renewal. The Canadian player had proposed lowering his salary request from €20 million per year to €17 million, which is close to Bayern's previous offer. However, there has been no significant movement since then, while Real Madrid remains poised to act. With Davies' current contract set to expire in 2025, he's at a critical juncture at the age of 23, and Real Madrid is not inclined to pursue him in January. According to Relevo, the Spanish club is determined to avoid taking Davies' potential signing lightly, as they have with previous transfers. Their goal is to secure him on a free transfer next summer as part of their defensive restructuring efforts.

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL: KROOS VS. REUS. This Saturday, two German legends play their final games for their respective clubs on the biggest stage in European football...the Champions League Final. And on the season finale of European Nights, Rog and Rory preview that epic clash by deep diving into the respective careers of Real Madrid's Toni Kroos and Dortmund's Marco Reus. The narratives surrounding these two gents could hardly be more different: Kroos, the ageless, effortless maestro with a cabinet full of trophies looking for one more taste of glory with Los Blancos. And Reus, the electric former wunderkind, hoping to enact revenge for a career snakebitten by injuries and BVB second-place finishes. Two men enter, but only one can leave victorious. All this and more on the latest European Nights... See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
