The Blizzard: Red Star 2-2 Bayern Munich, 1991

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at an absolutely phenomenal match - one that Jonathan describes as potentially his favourite ever game of football. The Athletic’s Rafa Honigstein joins us to represent the other half of this fixture, as Bayern Munich take on Red Star Belgrade in the second leg of the 1991 European Cup semi-finals. Political instability formed an all-encompassing backdrop to this game, with Slovenia and Croatia both declaring independence unilaterally in the months leading up to this game, and it was built up as a momentous footballing occasion. The 1991 European Cup was a tournament both sides were desperate to win; Bayern were obsessed with winning the European Cup again after 1976, and had suffered some traumatic final defeats in subsequent matches, while the Yugoslavian national side had notoriously lost a range of finals in the latter half of the 20th Century. With a home defeat in the first leg, Bayern were praying for a miracle - as we discover, the game more than lived up to this sizeable billing. Fancy getting in touch?
