Man City battle to another final, Mick McCarthy packs his suitcase, and a royal rumble in Antwerp

Kate, Luke and Vish look back on last night’s Manchester derby, where Pep’s City Rollers (one for the youngsters) cruised to a fourth straight League Cup final. But while Pep and John Stones got dizzy on that sweet, sweet Carabao, it was an all too familiar sinking feeling for Man United and Vish in his bedroom fort. We also pay homage to Mick McCarthy after his latest sacking at APOEL Nicosia - and even more so to poor Jack Byrne. But it’s all good, because Fizzer has been head-hunted for an ambiguous “role” at Inter Miami. And, of course, we address the giant, Belgian elephant in the room and give our assessment of the most unorthodox attempt to secure a transfer we have ever seen. Southampton climb up the table, Gareth Bale gets off the mark, and Mick McCarthy’s back in business

Each Premier League match seems to be falling into one of two categories: ‘chaotic goal-fest’ or ‘tedious, dull nonsense’. Join Jules, Luke and Pete on today’s episode as we sort through this weekend’s games. Southampton’s annihilation of Aston Villa certainly fits into the former category, as free-kick extraordinaire James Ward-Prowse showed his class. Man United vs Arsenal, though a great win for the Gunners, was a decidedly torrid affair. We get into those, plus Newcastle’s win over Everton and Mick McCarthy’s new gig, in an action-packed edition of the Football Ramble! The Football Ramble, the original and best football podcast. The Blizzard: Ireland 1-0 Netherlands, 2001

You join us in the Emerald Isle for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re taking a look at a historic afternoon for Irish football from 2001, alongside JOE’s Dion Fanning! The Netherlands arrived at Lansdowne Road with qualification for the 2002 World Cup on the line, while Mick McCarthy’s men had enjoyed a hugely successful qualifying campaign. Louis van Gaal had began to drift from his traditional 4-3-3 philosophy by this point, after a tough spell at Barcelona, and as this game slipped through their fingers he even finished the game playing four strikers. In contrast, Dion remembers how this game was perhaps “the last time Irish football felt united and moving in the same direction.” The Green Army were still the usual underdogs but, with a fantastic goal from Jason McAteer and a stalwart performance from captain Roy Keane, they secured World Cup qualification in front of 35,000 at Lansdowne Road.
