Dean Saunders | Senegal Need The Diouf

This week on the pod we’re joined by the legend Dean Saunders. Now best known for his TalkSPORT appearances, but many moons ago he was managing “two strikers who could do things Haaland couldn’t” our very own Chris Brown and Jon Parkin… and he didn’t have a bad playing career either. Dean’s training sessions have gone down in Under The Cosh folklore, especially for the prizes handed out, including a racehorse for Friday’s man of the match. Today, we finally hear straight from the horse’s mouth (Saunders, not Constitution Hill 🐎) about the science behind it all and how he even used a local reporter to motivate his players. Looking back on his playing career, Saunders once set the British transfer record — which some might say would make him a £100m+ player in today’s market… our research says closer to £36 million. While starring for the likes of Aston Villa and Liverpool, he became prolific using a foolproof technique that guaranteed 18+ goals a season without relying too much on his own ability. We also hear stories involving Ron Atkinson’s genius man-management, El Hadji Diouf playing an integral role in presidential elections, Jamie O’Hara causing him to get sacked, Graeme Souness starting a riot, and Pascal Chimbonda’s unforgettable wink. Senegal win the AFCON, Man Utd’s derby victory and Glasner goes off

Senegal are winners of the AFCON for the second time! Musa and Ryan begin with one of the most dramatic and astonishing international finals of all-time, which saw Senegal beat hosts Morocco in extra-time in a game that saw incredible drama and an amazing winning goal (03:24). They then move on to Manchester United’s 2-0 win over City in Saturday’s derby (27:29), as well as Michael Carrick’s appointment as head coach until the end of the season. There's discussion about the reaction to the appointment, how free United looked against City, whether this is a sign of things to come or if this is another example of something fans have seen before. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace have had a horrid week or so (56:35). Man United dominate City in the derby, plus the incredible AFCON finale

It’s Jimbo, Daniel Storey, Colin Millar and Luis Miguel Echegaray in position after another dramatic weekend of Premier League action. It’s 4 games without a win for Man City as Michael Carrick’s Man United produce a performance for the ages to win 2-0. How did the Red Devils do it? For the second matchday in a row, Arsenal fail to fully capitalise on City’s slip-up as they draw 0-0 at Forest. Will Mikel Arteta come to regret these missed opportunities in the title race? Perhaps not as Villa also stutter with a 1-0 defeat to Everton. We record the pod as the AFCON final is in progress, not knowing what was about to unfold. A controversial penalty, a walk-off, pitch invasions, a Panenka and eventually a heartbreaking defeat for hosts Morocco against Senegal. Maher Mezahi was there. Billed by some as El Sackico, West Ham are last-minute winners at Tottenham, who lose a third straight game. What next for Thomas Frank? And what next for Oliver Glasner after a remarkable few days where he reveals his plan to leave Palace in the summer, then takes aim at the board for abandoning him and his players.
