Our guest this week is one third of our favourite comedy sketch troupe ‘Pappys’; it’s upper-body nudity enthusiast and massive Wolves fan, Tom Parry. The 90s were a period of medium resurgence for Wolves after a desperate period in the late 80s which saw them drop into the fourth tier of English football for the only time in their history. Spearheading that charge for Wolves was Tom Parry’s hero; Mr Steve Bull. This week comedian Ivo Graham joins us in the studio as we focus solely on one of British literature’s greatest authors; not “old Bill Shakespeare”, but former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce. If you wander into your local book shop and head straight for the classics, it’s almost certain you won’t be confronted with the sacred text ‘Striker’ by Steve Bruce. So unlikely a career choice was it for Steve Bruce to have turned to crime fiction, that for many years, people refused to believe Steve Bruce had written it. The book is not autobiographical. Instead, it focuses on a Newcastle born football manager called ‘Steve Barnes’ who recently turned to management after retiring at ‘Mulcaster United’. Obviously, a massive literary stretch for the real-life Steve Bruce. We also discuss Steve’s short-lived TV show ‘Captain’s Log’. This week comedian Nish Kumar joins us in the ‘Quickly Kevin…’ studio to discuss ‘Premier Passions’, the documentary series following Sunderland and then manager Peter Reid’s retrospectively harrowing attempt to establish the club as a Premier League force in the late 90’s. A fly on the wall look at how precisely NOT to run a football club, where boardroom level concerns about bathroom fixtures and Terence Conran designed stadium interiors took precedent over signing a striker capable of competing in the highest division. There are, unsurprisingly, more lows than highs, as the aspirations of club, manager and fans slowly turn to dread with the same traumatically inevitable sense of doom one gets from watching Denis Irwin and Brian McClair double teaming David Busst circa 1996. He also pointed out that Southampton manufactured their own kit for a couple of seasons. A mix of these two scenarios happened at Derby County for the 1994/95 season. In 1993/1994 Derby had worn a kit manufactured by 'well known' sportswear firm Bukta. As a big admirer of the strip i was delighted to see the Rams wearing exactly the same shirt at the start of 1994/95, however the Bukta logo had been replaced by the clubs own stab at kit manufacturing 'Rams Pro Wear'. From what i can remember, the Rams Pro Wear logo had literally just been stitched over the top of the Bukta Motif.It only lasted for one season and i am unaware of the reasoning, i'd like to think the owners wanted to manufacture the kit themselves to save money only to give up and just recycle the Bukta shirts.Photo's of the 2 shirts attached for reference.
