Tom Craine reviewing a Chester City legend in an episode first broadcast on 3rd December 2018. --- Back in the studio this week is Quickly Kevin regular Tom Craine as we take a look at Terry Smith's failed spell at Chester City in the late 90s. Deploying such tactics as 'regular 442 rules', appointing "three captains" and passing on half time advice such as "they keep putting it in the hole"; Terry (an American who came to the English football league via the NFL) had been accused of not knowing much about football. We took to a Chester City documentary to discover the truth. There's also an update on Man Utd's away hotel room pairings and an amazing new Eddie McGoldrick chant. In an effort to become podcasting's version of UK Gold, we're spinning it back and replaying the glory days of QK, every Tuesday and Thursday. This is: QK Reloaded. We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... Scorer of the greatest own goal of the 90s, Lee Dixon. The episode was first broadcast 26th March 2018. -- In terms of value for money, there can be few more astute signings than the £375,000 George Graham paid Stoke City for Lee Dixon in January 1988. 25% of arguably the greatest 90s defence, Lee finished his Arsenal career with four league titles, three FA Cup winners medals, a UEFA Cup Winner's Cup medal and infamously a runners-up medal in the latter competition too. But it was the first of his league championship medals that intrigued us most; the night of 26th May 1989, Liverpool v Arsenal - a championship play off in the last game of the season. For a whole host of reasons, from Fever Pitch to the ramifications of the Hillsborough disaster, the 1988/89 season marked the end of football as it had largely been for 100 years. And in it's culmination, Michael Thomas' last minute winner didn't just cement the league for Arsenal, it also cemented the idea of live football as a major box office draw, with the dawn of the Premier League coming soon after. We put all of this to Lee. Plus... we speculate as to whether Sean Dyche eats worms. Synonymous with a golden period of Calcio, the sight of James holding aloft a pink paper on Football Italia was as regular an occurrence as a Baggio goal. We get the gossip on all the big topics; did Paul Ince ring James up for tips on Tomb Raider? What was Elvis Costello like? And did James ever have a night out with Gazza and Jimmy Five Bellies? We’ve also got big updates on both James Beattie’s Latin textbook and Lee Sharpe’s infamous fan club. We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... Broadsheet newspaper reading left-back, Graeme Le Saux. This episode was first broadcast 27th November 2017. ----- Our guest this week is one of the central characters of 90s English football; Chelsea, Blackburn and England's answer to the infamous 'left sided problem', Graeme Le Saux. Discerning broadsheet reader and noted 'clever footballer', Graeme's career was a 90s rollercoaster ride through triumph, success and controversy. From scoring England's 18th greatest goal to washing his own training kit at Blackburn; we do our best to cover it all. We also have a mid-90s child's perspective on Tony Adam's alcoholism via the medium of poetry, Jason McAteer's social media porn star flirtation and some curious player descriptions from a 1990 Panini sticker album Learn more about your ad choices. This episode was first broadcast on 9th October 2017. ---- Our guest this week is one third of our favourite comedy sketch troupe ‘Pappys’; it’s upper-body nudity enthusiast and massive Wolves fan, Tom Parry. The 90s were a period of medium resurgence for Wolves after a desperate period in the late 80s which saw them drop into the fourth tier of English football for the only time in their history. Spearheading that charge for Wolves was Tom Parry’s hero; Mr Steve Bull. We find out about Steve’s remarkable inclusion in the England squad for the 1990 World Cup, his inexplicable local newspaper column, and which deep-fried foodstuff Steve was seen carrying in inordinate amounts. We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... Man Utd sufferer Nish Kumar watching Peter Reid's mighty Sunderland in Premier Passions. This episode was first broadcast on the 24th April 2017. ----- This week comedian Nish Kumar joins us in the ‘Quickly Kevin…’ studio to discuss ‘Premier Passions’, the documentary series following Sunderland and then manager Peter Reid’s retrospectively harrowing attempt to establish the club as a Premier League force in the late 90’s. A fly on the wall look at how precisely NOT to run a football club, where boardroom level concerns about bathroom fixtures and Terence Conran designed stadium interiors took precedent over signing a striker capable of competing in the highest division. There are, unsurprisingly, more lows than highs, as the aspirations of club, manager and fans slowly turn to dread with the same traumatically inevitable sense of doom one gets from watching Denis Irwin and Brian McClair double teaming David Busst circa 1996. You can find the episodes we watched here…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbPKFiKE4-Ahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XRiu_z9f10It was so brilliantly bleak we only managed to watch two of the five episodes, and given the choice of watching the remaining three or being forced to drown a sack of kittens at gunpoint whilst footage of all England’s penalty misses in the 90’s played on loop in the background, we’d obviously choose to watch the remaining episodes. But only just…. There is also an unbelievable story about 90’s legend and Dube maestro Dion Dublin crossing paths with perennial landfill-indie whipping boys, Toploader. Efan Ekoku makes an obligatory (blink and you’ll miss it) cameo mention, plus all the usual correspondence, features, and items you’ve come to endure like the squad player nobody is ever excited to see warming up on the side-lines. Yes, that means you, Darren Caskey. As always, to get in touch with the show and keep up to date on all the latest news….Email: [email protected]: @QuicklyKevinFacebook: Quickly KevinAnd don't forget: instagram.com/quicklykevinAND LASTLY! Go on iTunes. Think of the most niche 90s footballer you can. Leave a review which mentions them. We'll read our favourites and the best will make an appearance in the following weeks show. (We’re contractually obliged to say the review doesn’t need to be 5 stars, but you’ve got as much chance getting picked as Steve Bruce did getting a senior cap for England if you don’t leave a five star review. As much chance getting picked as Kevin Keegan did at holding onto a 12 point lead at the top of the table if…..you get the idea) Enjoy the show and we are back next week for episode nine.Chris, Josh and Michael Learn more about your ad choices. This episode was first broadcast on 10th April 2017. ----- ITV in the 90s were famous for three things; Deirdre Barlow, adverts and our guest this week, Jim Rosenthal. He's covered 8 World Cups, even getting embedded with the England team for Italia 90. He was pitchside reporter the night Gareth Southgate missed in the shootout against Germany in Euro 96. In an effort to become podcasting's version of UK Gold, we're spinning it back and replaying the glory days of QK. This is: QK Reloaded. We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... Welsh heart-throb and Oh What A Time podcaster Elis James, S01E02. First broadcast on March 6th 2017. -------- Bobby Gould's tenure as Wales manager in the 90s will go down as one of the most bizarre eras in the history of sport. To relive the horror, this week we're joined by Wales' foremost 90s football expert; comedian and actor Elis James. There's also a discussion about 90s management styles and some cracking feedback from listeners; including one fantastic story about bumping into Colin Cooper on a water slide. Elis brought his favourite 90s football clips which included this one of Leyton Orient manager John Sitton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYDIMWpcKqI And this one of then-Huddersfield manager Neil Warnock (note chimney in the middle of dressing room): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im85NY4NKt4 Meanwhile, in follow up to episode one thank you to Chris Rann for sending us a clip of Ali Dia almost scoring: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k9vVV8Q9CXc And also thank you to Oliver Wilson who sent us this story about Derby County: Last week you discussed shirt sponsorship and Matt Le Tissier mentioned the Southampton once wore a Denmark kit that had been rebadged as Southampton. He also pointed out that Southampton manufactured their own kit for a couple of seasons. A mix of these two scenarios happened at Derby County for the 1994/95 season. In 1993/1994 Derby had worn a kit manufactured by 'well known' sportswear firm Bukta. As a big admirer of the strip i was delighted to see the Rams wearing exactly the same shirt at the start of 1994/95, however the Bukta logo had been replaced by the clubs own stab at kit manufacturing 'Rams Pro Wear'. From what i can remember, the Rams Pro Wear logo had literally just been stitched over the top of the Bukta Motif. It only lasted for one season and i am unaware of the reasoning, i'd like to think the owners wanted to manufacture the kit themselves to save money only to give up and just recycle the Bukta shirts.Photo's of the 2 shirts attached for reference. One club Saints legend, and Goal of the Month stalwart, Matthew Le Tissier. If you aren't sure who he is then the podcast probably isn't for you but here is a brief summary: And here is a refresher on his best goals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB9HjYmYwpk The main topic for discussion beyond Le Tiss is "George Weah's cousin" Ali Dia, who can read about here if that is your thing: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/nov/22/ali-dia-story-20-years-on-southampton-souness We also discuss Le Tissier's hat-trick for England B, which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAjGyTHLgK4 If you have met a 90s footballer in a restaurant or cafe email us at [email protected] Learn more about your ad choices. This episode we take a deep dive into some iconic 90's Football Fall-Outs. We've got Houllier vs Ginola. Fergie vs Keegan. And Andy Cole vs Teddy Sheringham. Yes, you read it right.
