Turf Wars Part One: The Making of ‘Hooligan’

Welcome to It Was What It Was, the football history podcast. In this first part of a two-part special on football hooliganism, co-hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper are joined by special guest Cass Pennant - former West Ham United Inter City Firm member who later became an author and film producer. They discuss director Ian Stuttard (known as “Butch”) and his 1985 groundbreaking documentary 'Hooligan', which challenged the stereotype of hooligans. Cass explains how Stuttard earned access by spending months with the ICF without a camera, building trust, and later filming from inside the action. The episode also covers the Thatcher-era context, the film’s controversial release and its wider impact on how 'firms' were understood. We finish the episode with Cass reflecting on Stuttard’s wider documentary career, their later partnership in a production company, and Stuttard’s lasting legacy. The Making of Mikel

A BBC World Service documentary revealing the untold stories behind Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s journey to the top. In Barcelona, former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina relives his time sharing bunk beds with Arteta at the world-famous La Masia academy, declaring that the boy from the Basque country was “born to be a manager”. Presenter John Bennett travels to Arteta’s home town of San Sebastian to meet his childhood coach at a small club, next to a hair salon, that has become an amazing football talent factory. Hear from former teammates at Everton, Arsenal and Rangers, from where Dutch great Ronald de Boer remembers Arteta stepping up aged 21 to score a stoppage-time penalty to snatch the title from Glasgow rivals Celtic: “To take that responsibility, at such a young age, in such an important game and moment of that decisive title race against Celtic was impressive.” And find out why the Welsh city of Newport played such an important part in Arteta’s journey into coaching. Arsenal legend Arsène Wenger and former Man City captain Vincent Kompany also feature in this documentary, which paints a picture of a single-minded, intelligent and meticulous man, schooled in the Barcelona style of play, who is now mixing it with the top managers in the game and has got Arsenal fans dreaming of glory once again.

Nish Kumar - Premier Passions : S01E08

This week comedian Nish Kumar joins us in the ‘Quickly Kevin…’ studio to discuss ‘Premier Passions’, the documentary series following Sunderland and then manager Peter Reid’s retrospectively harrowing attempt to establish the club as a Premier League force in the late 90’s. A fly on the wall look at how precisely NOT to run a football club, where boardroom level concerns about bathroom fixtures and Terence Conran designed stadium interiors took precedent over signing a striker capable of competing in the highest division. There are, unsurprisingly, more lows than highs, as the aspirations of club, manager and fans slowly turn to dread with the same traumatically inevitable sense of doom one gets from watching Denis Irwin and Brian McClair double teaming David Busst circa 1996. You can find the episodes we watched here…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbPKFiKE4-Ahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XRiu_z9f10It was so brilliantly bleak we only managed to watch two of the five episodes, and given the choice of watching the remaining three or being forced to drown a sack of kittens at gunpoint whilst footage of all England’s penalty misses in the 90’s played on loop in the background, we’d obviously choose to watch the remaining episodes. But only just…. There is also an unbelievable story about 90’s legend and Dube maestro Dion Dublin crossing paths with perennial landfill-indie whipping boys, Toploader. Efan Ekoku makes an obligatory (blink and you’ll miss it) cameo mention, plus all the usual correspondence, features, and items you’ve come to endure like the squad player nobody is ever excited to see warming up on the side-lines. Yes, that means you, Darren Caskey. As always, to get in touch with the show and keep up to date on all the latest news….Email: [email protected]: @QuicklyKevinFacebook: Quickly KevinAnd don't forget: instagram.com/quicklykevinAND LASTLY! Go on iTunes. Think of the most niche 90s footballer you can. Leave a review which mentions them. We'll read our favourites and the best will make an appearance in the following weeks show. (We’re contractually obliged to say the review doesn’t need to be 5 stars, but you’ve got as much chance getting picked as Steve Bruce did getting a senior cap for England if you don’t leave a five star review. As much chance getting picked as Kevin Keegan did at holding onto a 12 point lead at the top of the table if…..you get the idea) Enjoy the show and we are back next week for episode nine.Chris, Josh and Michael Hosted on Acast.
