We'll be playing through our original episodes in release order. And this is... Man Utd sufferer Nish Kumar watching Peter Reid's mighty Sunderland in Premier Passions. This episode was first broadcast on the 24th April 2017. ----- This week comedian Nish Kumar joins us in the ‘Quickly Kevin…’ studio to discuss ‘Premier Passions’, the documentary series following Sunderland and then manager Peter Reid’s retrospectively harrowing attempt to establish the club as a Premier League force in the late 90’s. A fly on the wall look at how precisely NOT to run a football club, where boardroom level concerns about bathroom fixtures and Terence Conran designed stadium interiors took precedent over signing a striker capable of competing in the highest division. There are, unsurprisingly, more lows than highs, as the aspirations of club, manager and fans slowly turn to dread with the same traumatically inevitable sense of doom one gets from watching Denis Irwin and Brian McClair double teaming David Busst circa 1996. You can find the episodes we watched here…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbPKFiKE4-Ahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XRiu_z9f10It was so brilliantly bleak we only managed to watch two of the five episodes, and given the choice of watching the remaining three or being forced to drown a sack of kittens at gunpoint whilst footage of all England’s penalty misses in the 90’s played on loop in the background, we’d obviously choose to watch the remaining episodes. But only just…. There is also an unbelievable story about 90’s legend and Dube maestro Dion Dublin crossing paths with perennial landfill-indie whipping boys, Toploader. Efan Ekoku makes an obligatory (blink and you’ll miss it) cameo mention, plus all the usual correspondence, features, and items you’ve come to endure like the squad player nobody is ever excited to see warming up on the side-lines. Ipswich Town and Kieran McKenna have done the impossible. They have become the first team after Southampton 12 years ago to gain successive promotions from League One to the Premier League. Rog and New York Times chief soccer correspondent Rory Smith deep dive into the history of Arsenal to look back at just exactly how they became one of the biggest clubs in Europe, why legendary manager Arsene Wenger managed to do everything but lift the Champions League trophy, and whether or not Mikel Arteta's current squad have a legitimate shot at European glory. Then, Rog and Rory hop on over to the Europa League to look at giant-killers Atalanta, fresh off of slaying Liverpool at Anfield in the first leg of their semi-final matchup. Just how did this little club from Bergamo become so successful? And what is the ceiling to their success? All of this and more on the latest European Nights... Rob sits down with Dennis Tueart this week at the City Football Academy to discuss his rich and varied career. Tueart has had three stints at City – two as a player and one as a director – giving him a unique perspective of the Club. He joined from Sunderland in 1974 and went on to win the 1976 League Cup, scoring in the final with a brilliant overhead kick that has gone down as one of the all-time great City goals. He left City in 1978 and joined the New York Cosmos, replacing Pele in a star-studded lineup, before returning to City in 1979. During his time as a director, City enjoyed back-to-back promotions under Joe Royle and after a year spent back in the old First Division, established themselves in the Premier League under the guidance of Kevin Keegan. Tueart, as ever, is frank and open as he discusses his life and times. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information. We’re back with the second part of our extended Ramble Meets… interview with former Liverpool, Fulham and England midfielder Danny Murphy! On today’s episode, we rejoin Danny’s story when he left Charlton and joined Martin Jol’s Tottenham. Danny talks to Luke about how the initial differences with Jol gave way to problems in his family life that ultimately hampered his career in North London. He then swapped North for West, joining Fulham, and they reminisce about the club's journey to reach the 2009/10 Europa League final under Roy Hodgson. They also discuss what it’s like challenging a manager whose philosophy isn’t working, wonder whether he could have achieved more and remember Clint Dempsey’s unbelievable reaction to being told he’d been dropped on the day of that Europa League final. We did it! We booked a Leicester City guest. But we never could have guessed at how cool this guest would be. He's been supporting the club since 1998, so he has seen a lot of shit. That's through several relegations, a quick stop in League One, a couple of years duking it out in the Championship, the return to the Prem, the title, Champions League, mainstays, and now the team that is giving Liverpool the most cause to look over their shoulder. Jason and his twin brother started New York Foxes, which is a supporters group based at Footfall Factory in New York city. They are responsible for building support for the club in the USA and have become a sounding board for others around the US that are interested in building groups in other cities. So much cool Leicester information in this episode. Christian Fuchs shout-outs, Jamie Vardy worship, players that have come and gone, take on the current season, preview of some trips to Leicester, and more.
