Maybe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer IS the Messiah after all His winger-cum-striker filled Man United team have found some consistency and a convincing win over Man City could just… help Liverpool win the title a bit sooner. It’s another At The Match episode from Germany, but this time Andy and Luke wander off the beaten track, and out of the top flight. The plan was for Andy to experience some fourth-tier football in Wuppertal but, as Uli Hesse (or Pyrolator) will tell you, it always rains in Wuppertal. Today we take a look back at a game of genuine historical importance in European football history. On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by The Independent’s Miguel Delaney to discuss the 1963 European Cup final between Milan and Benfica. This pivotal moment in the history of the European Cup cannot be understated; it represented two dominant teams at opposite ends of their respective cycles. Milan arrived as purveyors of a free-scoring, but still pragmatic, catenaccio and regarded themselves as significant underdogs. But, with their manager Nereo Rocco’s pre-match antics on the bus helping to lighten the mood, two goals from José Altafini denied Benfica their third consecutive European Cup. This was an early example of modernity in football tactics; a team winning on the strength of a tactical system with eleven components, rather than relying on eleven individuals beating their opposite man. We welcome a footballing icon to today’s episode of Ramble Meets… as Andy is joined by one of England's first black footballers, former West Ham striker Clyde Best! After choosing football over cricket in his native Bermuda, and becoming involved in the national side when he was just fifteen, Clyde flew across to London for a trial with West Ham United and went on to score 58 goals over seven seasons. Clyde sits with Andy to discuss the horrific racist abuse from the terraces and how teammates like Bobby Moore and Harry Redknapp helped him through it. Clyde also talks about some of his favourite moments from playing in England, gives some advice to the current generation of black footballers and reminisces about managing the Bermudan national team. On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at the heady days of the 1987 Littlewoods Cup. John Cross, the Mirror’s chief football writer, joins us to remember the semi-final second leg replay between Tottenham and Arsenal! With Arsenal languishing in comparative mediocrity by the early 1980s, George Graham’s arrival begun a revolution at the club – and nowhere was this typified more than in this game. Arsenal, spurred on by the half-time announcement at White Hart Lane detailing how Spurs fans could buy tickets to the final, fought back to level the second leg and force this replay. John remembers this incredible game and its crackling atmosphere as David Pleat’s free-scoring Spurs side took on Graham’s resilient Arsenal for a place in the final against Liverpool, as well as the amazing story of David Pleat giving George Graham a lift home after a cup of tea and a sandwich!
