Episode 190 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Portland Was Weird)

Another week, another Cascadian derby, another Fredy Montero goal. Only trouble was this week it ended in a 2-1 defeat. We dissect Vancouver Whitecaps' loss against the Portland Timbers. Was it the cliched game of two halves that it felt? Where did it all go wrong, who stood out, who was targeted, and should the 'Caps have taken something from it? We get the thoughts from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson and striker Fredy Montero after the match, about the game and where they go from here with three more tough away games coming up fast. We also chat with Christian Bolanos, who had a poor first half display but was likely the best player on the pitch for the Whitecaps in the second half. It's an honest take after the game, and there may be a little frustration starting to show. See what you think. With the MLS Transfer Window closing soon, are the 'Caps still likely to add some new faces? We hear from Robbo and ponder where they need to be and will they come? There's also chat about tactics, fitness levels, Kekuta Manneh, a look ahead to next week's Canadian derby at Montreal, and more. Have a listen!

Nish Kumar - Premier Passions : S01E08

This week comedian Nish Kumar joins us in the ‘Quickly Kevin…’ studio to discuss ‘Premier Passions’, the documentary series following Sunderland and then manager Peter Reid’s retrospectively harrowing attempt to establish the club as a Premier League force in the late 90’s. A fly on the wall look at how precisely NOT to run a football club, where boardroom level concerns about bathroom fixtures and Terence Conran designed stadium interiors took precedent over signing a striker capable of competing in the highest division. There are, unsurprisingly, more lows than highs, as the aspirations of club, manager and fans slowly turn to dread with the same traumatically inevitable sense of doom one gets from watching Denis Irwin and Brian McClair double teaming David Busst circa 1996. You can find the episodes we watched here…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbPKFiKE4-Ahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XRiu_z9f10It was so brilliantly bleak we only managed to watch two of the five episodes, and given the choice of watching the remaining three or being forced to drown a sack of kittens at gunpoint whilst footage of all England’s penalty misses in the 90’s played on loop in the background, we’d obviously choose to watch the remaining episodes. But only just…. There is also an unbelievable story about 90’s legend and Dube maestro Dion Dublin crossing paths with perennial landfill-indie whipping boys, Toploader. Efan Ekoku makes an obligatory (blink and you’ll miss it) cameo mention, plus all the usual correspondence, features, and items you’ve come to endure like the squad player nobody is ever excited to see warming up on the side-lines. Yes, that means you, Darren Caskey. As always, to get in touch with the show and keep up to date on all the latest news….Email: [email protected]: @QuicklyKevinFacebook: Quickly KevinAnd don't forget: instagram.com/quicklykevinAND LASTLY! Go on iTunes. Think of the most niche 90s footballer you can. Leave a review which mentions them. We'll read our favourites and the best will make an appearance in the following weeks show. (We’re contractually obliged to say the review doesn’t need to be 5 stars, but you’ve got as much chance getting picked as Steve Bruce did getting a senior cap for England if you don’t leave a five star review. As much chance getting picked as Kevin Keegan did at holding onto a 12 point lead at the top of the table if…..you get the idea) Enjoy the show and we are back next week for episode nine.Chris, Josh and Michael Hosted on Acast. With the Canadian Premier League set to start next year, we also chat about how that's shaping up and what we'd like to see from it. We talk with TSS Rovers owners and coaches Colin Elmes and Will Cromack about why they chose to start a PDL team now and whether we could see them move it to the Canadian PL one day. All this and the Sultans of Ping FC return for our Wavelength section. Have a listen.

The 'Caps headed to Salt Lake City to face RSL, but were demolished in the terrible weather conditions by a team that always looked to be one step ahead of them. How urgent is their need for new faces before the transfer window closes? Are the injury and road stretch coming up going to do irreparable damage for the season? Is there concern about the 'Caps attendance at both MLS and USL levels? So much to discuss. And The Business are featured in this week's Wavelength section. Have a listen!
