Who will progress beyond the World Cup quarterfinals? Our look at the stats associated with the teams left in the...
France might have the best player in the tournament, but the most shackled squad. Uruguay might not be the worse version of Argentina that Goodman thought they'd be. Belgium...well...you can't say that wasn't a wild way to finish a match (just ignore the first 70 minutes where everything was very bad). Then there's Brazil, a team that somehow is getting nitpicked despite looking very, very good. How they got here – and where they go from here – in this week's episode, brought to you by The At...

Well! We are through the looking glass now, people. England won a penalty shoot out and are into the quarter finals after a yellow card-laden battle against Colombia. All of our aunts are giddy as we try to rap our heads and croaky throats around it. Sweden also played a Roger Federer-less Switzerland, and though that was nowhere near as good there’s still plenty of fun to be had in discussing it. Warning: contains distressing, Ian Botham-related content. Yet more scenes so unbelievable that we all need to accept that this World Cup is crazy as Belgium come from two down to beat a spirited Japan, with super subs Marouane Fellaini and Nacer Chadli. Prior to the game a hitherto successful psychic octopus was killed in Japan. Makes you think. Alongside this there’s time to look over Neymar’s theatrics, Brazil’s stoic professionalism and we of course take the opportunity to look ahead to England vs Colombia, and even a little further, as we get a little carried away while we have the chance. Vancouver Whitecaps must be wishing that the World Cup "break" was still going on. I know we do! Two defeats in two matches against two lowly teams has derailed all the good work done before the break and put the Whitecaps playoff hopes very much in trouble as they slip further behind in the points per game standings. We look back at Vancouver's Canada Day defeat at home to Colorado Rapids. What went wrong? How much of it was on the 'Caps and how much was down to the play of the visitors? And where does the team go from here? We also hear from both head coaches, Colorado's Anthony Hudson and Vancouver's Carl Robinson, plus we speak with Tim Howard, who had a lot to say about Vancouver fans and MLS security after the game. We also look back at what came out of the Whitecaps Town Hall meeting midweek and chat about a fantastic week of World Cup action and what lies ahead. Plus our exclusive chat with Kendall Waston upon his return from Russia after an eventful tournament with Costa Rica. Plus we take great joy at wallowing in Zach's German gloom and play one of the worst World Cup songs of all time, and that's saying something! We also bring you a double dose of Wavelength this week featuring Bell and Sebastian and Halftime Oranges. So, there’s no football today. It’s so weird. However, nature abhors a vacuum so we’ve got a podcast full of it anyway. We look back over England and Belgium’s strange, somewhat empty battle for top/second spot, Japan’s self-flagellation regarding their slightly ironic qualification via fair play and bid a fond farewell to some of the characters we’ll miss from a brilliant World Cup group stage. On top of all this we also have an update on the various Marci who are still in the competition, plot England’s route to glory and turn our attention to the last 16. Let's be honest, is anyone really all that excited about watching MLS matches when the World Cup is on? It was bad enough last week when Vancouver Whitecaps put in one of their worst performances of the season as they lost in Philadelphia. Now they have one of the worst teams in MLS this year coming to BC Place on Canada Day. Joe and Gideon look ahead to the match, discussing such things as what threat Colorado pose Vancouver, whether the Rapids have turned things around after last week's win, and what changes we might see to put some spark back into the Whitecaps. All that and more, plus a healthy dose of World Cup chat thrown into the mix as well. Have a listen!

Woo hoo! It turns out that very, very occasionally you can write off the Germans, and we at the Football Ramble are happy to embrace this opportunity mere hours before they play FIFA's third-ranked team. The dynamic player-management duo of Lionel Messi and a bleedy Javier Mascherano saw Argentina through the group after a scare. Was it ever in doubt? Yes. Yes it was. Alongside this there’s gushing over Croatia, scorn for France and Denmark as they provide the tournament’s first 0-0, and some odd chat about bones. Also, Luke writes off the Germans again, which is probably as close to a spoiler as you can get in a World Cup. Get involved, you Squares. We’re back to mash buttons, chat bitrates and harness the power of sexiness! Group B ended in chaotic fashion and we look back on it with fond memories. Farewell, old friend. Glancing further around the tourney we feel for poor Mo Salah, postulate on the merits of Argentina using Lionel Messi as an impact sub in an intriguing Group D, and delight in a surprise appearance from Scatman Speller. Variety is the spice of life. Or say they say. Hopefully it is as we have a variety of subjects to cover in the latest episode of the AFTN Soccer Show. We chat with Rob about all things CPL in BC, including the latest on what's happening with a team in the Fraser Valley and when we can expect to see a launch for the team in Victoria. We also bring you some World Cup chat as we look back at what's been an exciting week of shocks and big talking points, and friends of the show, Goldie Lookin' Chain are back in our Wavelength section with the official Wales 2018 World Cup anthem! Eeeeeeeasay! How about that, eh? We’re still giddy from England’s 6-1 demolition of Panama, a display that was as much a party as it was a football match. No we’re not getting carried away, we’re just loving every moment. We’re on such a high we’re even talking about England and Belgium trying a different sport for their final group game, tennis also gets a mention due to an old favourite, and a little bit of goat-based cabin fever sets in.
