News linked to club: frankfurt

Jimbo’s joined by Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús & James Horncastle for a deep-dive into all the latest action and headlines from across the continent. There’s only one place to start - and the news that broke late on Monday afternoon that Xabi Alonso has been sacked as Real Madrid head coach - and replaced by the club’s reserve team coach Alvaro Arbeloa. The Athletic’s Guillermo Rai joins us for the immediate reaction to the news which followed the 3-2 defeat by dear friends Barcelona in the Supercopa on Sunday evening. There’s drama of a title race variety in Italy - where the hunt for the Scudetto was reignited once again as Inter, Milan and Napoli all dropped points to open the door for chasers Roma and Juventus. And in Germany - the Bundesliga returned from the Winterpause in style with goals galore across the weekend including Bayern putting EIGHT past Wolfsburg, while Frankfurt and Dortmund played out a 3-3 thriller on Friday night. Vincent Kompany’s side couldn’t win the title by a record-breaking points margin, could they? All that plus the latest from the Coupe de France as Endrick marks his debut for Lyon with a winning goal, reminiscing on the ‘Mohawk Trident’ - and dramatic snowscapes in Hamburg. The Euro crew are back as Jimbo, Pol Ballús, James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Seb Stafford-Bloor (in person!) assemble for a bumper look ahead to Matchday 1 in the Champions League. Barcelona proved it’s a case of no Yamal, no stadium, no problem - routing Valencia 6-0 in front of less than 6,000 fans at the Johan Cruyff Stadium. But it’s Real who continue to set the early pace - reduced to 10-men but still able to get the better of Sociedad to maintain their perfect start to the season. The game of the weekend came in Serie A, where the Derby d'Italia certainly didn’t disappoint as the Thuram brothers took centre stage in a 4-3 thriller in Turin. Plus - Antonio Conte 2.0 shows he’s not as inflexible as everyone thinks - with his Napoli side coasting to a 3-1 win at Fiorentina to also make it three wins from three at the start of the campaign. Bayern warmed up for the visit of Chelsea with an emphatic 5-0 Bundesliga victory over Hamburg on Saturday, while Leverkusen got the post-ten Hag era off to a winning start in their 3-1 beating of Frankfurt - despite being reduced to nine men! PSG suffered injury blows aplenty in their 2-0 win over Lens which featured an emotional goodbye to one of their own - Presnel Kimpembe - after more than 20 years at the club. Plus, how equipped are Marseille to come away from the Bernabéu with a result in one of the most intriguing ties of the round? All that plus training ground cats, Charli xcx’s wedding, nights out in Monaco and a whole lot of innuendo (we can only apologise). Produced by Lucy Oliva. Jimbo’s joined by Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús, Seb Stafford-Bloor and James Horncastle for your weekly dose of Continental chatter. It’s a clean sweep of four Clasico victories this season for Barcelona over Real after Sunday afternoon’s bonkers 4-3 win at Montjuïc. It moves Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear with three games left to play, while Carlo Ancelotti sets off into the Brazilian sunset… Over in Italy, after their midweek Champions League heroics Inter closed the gap on Napoli at the top of the table to just one point as Antonio Conte’s side conceded an 84th minute equaliser from Genoa to set up a nervy finish with two games left of this enthralling Serie A campaign. We touch base with the equally dramatic title race in the Eredivisie - where Ajax’s nine-point lead at the top of the table has evaporated to just one. Chasers PSV came back from 2-0 down at Feyenoord to win 3-2 in the 99th minute AND Ajax lost 3-0 at home! Michiel Jongsma stops by to tell us more. In France, Monaco locked in their UCL place courtesy of a 2-0 win over Lyon - while Marseille followed suit in their 3-1 victory at Le Havre - but could Roberto De Zerbi’s future be elsewhere? And in the Bundesliga, there’s wild celebrations in Hamburg as they return to the top flight for the first time in seven years - while the hunt for UCL football goes down to the last day as Dortmund look to pip Freiburg or Frankfurt to a top four finish. Plus - bicycle kicks, train journeys with footballers, Xherdan Shaqiri guiding Basel to glory and making friends with all of you… Produced by Lucy Oliva.
