Marcela Mora y Araujo | Argentina 'are not underdogs', final Messi moment on the world stage?

Adrian Barry was joined by South American football expert Marcela Mora y Araujo on her way to Doha for a discussion on the monumental World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and the Netherlands. Football with thanks to Sky Ireland

The cult of Lionel Messi

The Athletic's Abi Paterson is in Doha, Qatar at the World Cup and has a few burning questions regarding a player who many consider as the greatest footballer of all time: Lionel Messi. The forward has captained his Argentina side to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, which is widely thought to be his last ever World Cup tournament at 35 years of age. With questions ranging from; is Lionel Messi the greatest? To is he better than fellow Argentine Diego Maradona, or his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo? And has his ambassadorial role with Saudi Arabia effected him? Abi is joined by a host of guests including James Horncastle, Adam Crafton, Felipe Cardenas, Sam Lee, Michael Cox, and a number of other journalists and fans in Qatar. Hosted on Acast. Recapping the Round of 16, Previewing the Quarters: Part 1

We've got the Netherlands, Argentina, Croatia and Brazil through to the quarters. How they did it, how Brazil got so good with a broken team, what might be some ways for Van Gaal to approach Argentina, were we unfair to Scaloni, a lot going on here. Morocco make history as rampant Ramos replaces Ronaldo

After 17 days of non-stop action, Jimbo, Duncan Alexander, Tim Spiers and Daniel Storey take stock after another huge day at the World Cup. Portugal smash the Swiss 6-1 to progress to the quarter-finals, on an evening where all of Fernando Santos’s decisions paid off. Including dropping Cristiano Ronaldo for hat-trick hero Goncalo Ramos. Morocco become just the 4th African team ever to reach the last 8 of the World Cup. As Maher Mezahi explains, a star is born in manager Walid Regragui. But where now for Spain, who have very little to show for their thousands of passes. Plus former Netherlands winger Ryan Babel joins us to preview the Dutch team’s clash with Argentina on Friday and explain why he rapped about Louis Van Gaal. Produced by Charlie Jones. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Portugal 6-1 Switzerland (02.00) • PART 2a: Morocco beat Spain on penalties with Maher Mezahi (13.00) • PART 2b: Highlights from the first 17 days (27.00) • PART 3: Netherlands v Argentina preview with Ryan Babel (36.00) SIGN UP TO THE ATHLETIC TODAY FOR £2 A MONTH FOR 12 MONTHS • theathletic.com/totally Hosted on Acast. So close and yet so far: Jules, Pete and Andy discuss the big news. Mauro and Wanda Icardi are indeed back together. The Netherlands turn up as the USA exit, and Demba Ba on England-Senegal

Jimbo’s joined by Michael Cox and Tim Spiers as the knockout stages of the World Cup get underway. Argentina make their way past a spirited Australia with Lionel Messi turning it on. As for America, Paul Tenorio tells us the striker search starts now. England battle Senegal and the ITV curse on Sunday. Demba Ba tells us why Gareth Southgate should fear conceding the first goal. And penalties. Plus France take on Poland. But the Polish press aren’t feeling too proud of their team back home. Produced by Charlie Jones. Japan shock Germany and Spain smash Costa Rica

Jimbo welcomes Duncan Alexander and Sasha Goryunov into the studio on Day 4 of the World Cup. The less said about Morocco versus Croatia the better but after that there were some amazing games. Japan pegged back 2014 world champions Germany to produce the biggest shock of the tournament… had Saudi Arabia not beaten Argentina. The German players showed that a protest is actually possible at this World Cup with hands over their mouths and rainbows on their laces. Spain smacked Costa Rica for seven. Is this just a lovely day out for La Roja or the start of something more? Canada somehow lost to a Belgium side that have aged… And we look ahead to Thursday’s action as Jose Delgado talks to us about the prospects for Portugal against Ghana. Produced by Steve Hankey. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ronaldo leaves, Man Utd for sale, Saudi Arabia humble Messi & Argentina

Day three of the World Cup started with Saudi Arabia beating Argentina 2-1, and ended with the news that Cristiano Ronaldo has left Manchester United, the Glazers have put Man Utd up for sale, oh and England captain Harry Kane is having a scan on his ankle ahead of Friday's game vs USA. Here to reflect on all of that is the Athletic's Adam Leventhal, who is joined by Matt Slater following his trip to the Saudi/Qatar border to look at that shock result amid the backdrop of Messi's commercial relationship with Saudi Arabia, plus Matt gives us his expert view on how things will play out at Man Utd now the Glazers have effectively announced they want to sell. We also hear from David Ornstein, Adam Crafton and Laura Williamson on Cristiano Ronaldo's second tenure at Old Trafford finally coming to an end and what it means not just for his world cup but for the rest of his career. Plus we get the latest on the Harry Kane injury situation from our England correspondent Jack Pitt-Brooke Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
