Record-breaking Bayern Munich squad depth shines against St. Pauli

Bayern Munich added another big record to their ever-growing list as they dispatched St. Pauli 5-0 on Matchday 29 to become the highest scoring Bundesliga team ever, overtaking the iconic Bayern team of 1971/72. What made the result even more impressive was that victory came courtesy of a significantly rotated team as the Bavarians continue to fight on three fronts.

The Truth: Are Bayern Munich the Best Team in Europe?

It's time for The Truth! Sam and Dougie are back together (although sadly not in the studio) to take a look at just how well things are going at Bayern Munich right now for Vincent Kompany (and company). After winning 2-1 at the Bernabeu to record their first away win against Real Madrid in 25 years, many people have them as the favourites to lift the Champions League title at the end of the season, and there's plenty of reasons to be positive around Bayern right now. The scintillating form of their front three - Luis Diaz, Harry Kane, and Michael Olise - has led to the trio scoring 87 goals between them this season already, and 52 assists for good measure. There's the age-defying quality of Manuel Neuer in goal, a formidable midfield spearheaded by veteran Joshua Kimmich and rising star Aleksandar Pavlovic, the introduction of Jonathan Tah has been a masterstroke in the middle of defence, and the pace of Alphonso Davies combining with the guile of Konrad Laimer at full back. To top all that off, there's a late-stage rejuvenated Serge Gnabry flying in the middle, the mind-bending talent of Jamal Musiala returning from injury, and the prodigious teenage sensation Lennart Karl popping up with crucial moments that have many in Germany arguing he should go to the World Cup with the National Team. So, right now, are there any weaknesses in this Bayern side? Can this growing team now match up to an Arsenal side that beat them in the League stage? And could PSG be the wildcard in the pack as they attempt to go back-to-back in the Champions League? As ever, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Kylian Mbappé’s Real Madrid reportedly target Michael Olise in $185 million move from Bayern Munich

Looking to boost their offensive output, Real Madrid would be seeking to strengthen Kylian Mbappé. For this reason, Michael Olise emerges as the ideal solution, as the Blancos are reportedly preparing to make a $185 million offer to Bayern Munich. Throughout the 2025–26 season, Real Madrid have shown themselves to be quite limited offensively, as Vinicius Jr. has not been at his best and Kylian Mbappé faced physical issues. In this context, Michael Olise emerges as the ideal solution to their problems, being a target for the next season. In fact, the Spanish side is reportedly considering making a $185 million offer to Bayern Munich for the Frenchman. According to Christian Falk, via CF Bayern Insider, Michael Olise’s brilliant performance at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has caught Real Madrid’s attention. As a result, president Florentino Pérez is determined to pursue his signing, preparing a €160 million offer (around $185 million) to Bayern Munich. Far from being competition for Mbappé or Vinícius, the Frenchman would be an ideal complement. With a contract until 2029, the German side are in no rush to sell Olise, as he does not have a release clause. In addition, they have made it clear that they would not sell him even for an offer exceeding $200 million, labeling Michael as untouchable. With this, Bayern Munich aim to establish him as the cornerstone of their future project, ahead of Lennart Karl or Jamal Musiala. While Michael Olise is quite comfortable at Bayern Munich, Real Madrid’s interest could push him to consider a departure from the club. However, this is far from simple, as he is unique in his position within the German side and is the future star of the squad—something he would not necessarily have at the Spanish side. Moreover, coach Vincent Kompany has brought out his best version, being a key factor in maintaining his continuity at the Bundesliga side. Michael Olise of Bayern Munich. Michael Olise emerges as Bayern Munich’s most influential player Vincent Kompany has managed to establish Bayern Munich as one of the best sporting projects in Europe. With his imposing style of play, Harry Kane and Luis Díaz have been able to bring out their best versions, leading the team in scoring. Nevertheless, Michael Olise stands out as the most decisive player in the entire squad, delivering masterclass performances throughout the season. Unlike Kane or Díaz, Olise is a player capable of shining both centrally and out wide. With his tactical intelligence and pace, the Frenchman has managed to become the most decisive player on the team. In addition, he consistently finds space to break on the counter, being the focal point of the attack against Real Madrid. Alongside this, he has been highly productive, scoring 16 goals and providing 25 assists.

Is There Any Redemption For Liverpool This Season?

PSG dismantled Liverpool at the Parc des Princes and were unlucky not to score even more. Did Arne Slot get it wrong with a back five, or are PSG simply on another level? Elsewhere in Madrid, a brilliant performance from Michael Olise helped Bayern Munich take a crucial lead back to Munich. Another goal for Harry Kane brings his tally to 49 for the season, could he become the first English Ballon d’Or winner since Michael Owen? Gary, Alan and Micah also look ahead to a pivotal week for Arsenal. Despite an unconvincing performance against Sporting, they got the win, but can they carry that momentum into the weekend against Bournemouth and get their season back on track? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Rest Is Football is powered by Fuse Energy. Champions League review: a brilliant Georgian, Bayern’s regret and Arsenal refind their faith

This week’s quarter-finals provided some classic action as this season’s competition hurtles towards its conclusion Bayern Munich had not won at the Santiago Bernabéu since May 2001, when they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final on their way to becoming European champions. Tuesday night’s match changed all that. The 29th Champions League meeting between the teams lived up to its heavyweight billing, though Bayern, superior on the night, may rue their failure to extend their 2-1 lead. Real Madrid meanwhile could point to Manuel Neuer making nine saves – not bad for a 40-year-old. “We won’t win the competition without more of these kinds of performances,” said Bayern’s manager, Vincent Kompany, of his keeper. Big trophies are rarely won without great goalkeepers and Neuer continues to play like an all-time great. Bayern’s second goal was a trademark finish from Harry Kane, who made the difficult look easy. The goal will also have calmed England fans’ fears that their captain will arrive at the World Cup suffering from his usual summer malaise. A word too for Luis Díaz and Michael Olise, Bayern’s brilliant wingers whose performances brought back memories of the club’s modern greats Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben. Kompany’s team were commanding in Madrid, but may fear the backlash from the 15-times champions, the kings of comebacks.

Champions League Takeaway: Atleti Spin Sorry Spurs, Newcastle Hit By Late Barça Sting, Liverpool'...

Hello Rank Squad! It's the first Champions League Takeaway of the week, looking back at Tuesday's action from the First Legs of the Round of 16 - where there were a glut of goals, some games put to bed already, a couple of shocks, and another nadir from perhaps the saddest club in world football right now in Tottenham Hotspur. We start with Spurs' visit to the Metropolitano to play Atletico Madrid, where in the first 15 minutes a catastrophic collapse plumbed new depths in what has already been a disastrous season for the Lilywhites. This time Antonin Kinsky was the man in the firing line, with the young keeper substituted just 15 minutes into his Champions League debut. Atleti hit five, and whilst Spurs managed two in reply to nominally keep them in the tie, this was another brutal night for interim manager Igor Tudor, who has now conceded 14 goals in the four games he has been in charge of - all four of them losses. Surely, this can't go on. We then head to Tyneside, where Newcastle United put in a very impressive performance against a lacklustre Barcelona, and were rewarded with Harvey Barnes' late opener to give them the lead...only to see that wiped out by a Lamine Yamal penalty in injury time after Dani Olmo was felled in the box. Scant reward for a good showing for the Toon, but Barça escaping with a draw despite being nowhere near their best at St. James' Park. In Part Two we look to Istanbul - where Galatasaray repeated their league stage scoreline against Liverpool with a 1-0 win over the Reds at Rams Park, in a game that ended up being a microcosm of Liverpool's season - fragile defensively and wasteful up top; before rounding things off with a chat about Bayern's mesmerising 6-1 win over Atalanta in Bergamo, where Michael Olise dazzled on a night where Bayern ran absolute rings around their opposition, and confirmed their status as one of the outright favourites to win this competition this season. The Champions League returns! + Barca’s 11-game winning run is over

Jimbo’s got European football friends Pol Ballús, James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor and Tom Williams alongside him as the Champions League re-enters the room… We start with those midweek UCL MD7 ties - including the tight battle for a top eight finish with the likes of Tottenham v Dortmund, Marseille v Liverpool and Juventus v Benfica looking finely poised. In Serie A, there were tributes to Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso - who passed away on Saturday but left a huge legacy in not only Florence but across the Italian sporting landscape. La Viola honoured him by beating Bologna 2-1 on Sunday to move out of the bottom three. Over in La Liga, the gap’s been cut to just one point! That’s after Barcelona’s 11-game winning streak was ended by a 2-1 defeat at Real Sociedad. Real Madrid took advantage, beating Levante 2-0 amid a backdrop of boos, whistles and protests in the Spanish capital… Meanwhile in the Bundesliga, Bayern became the first team in Europe’s top 5 leagues to score 100 goals in all competitions this season as they came from behind to beat Leipzig 5-1 thanks to a second half masterclass from Michael Olise. Plus, what next for Frankfurt after Dino Topmoller was sacked after their latest 3-3 draw? And over in France - Lens are *still* top of the table thanks to a club-record eight straight Ligue 1 wins. PSG stay a point behind after their 3-0 win over Lille - which featured one of the goals of the season from Ousmane Dembele. All that plus pinchos, personalised apps - and poor ratings! Produced by Lucy Oliva. Arsenal v Bayern & Chelsea v Barca headline European midweek

Jimbo beams in Seb-Stafford Bloor from Hamburg and James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Pol Ballús in the studio (!) for a latest dose of European and poultry-based chitchat ahead of MD5 in the Champions League. It’s a midweek full of fascinating ties with Arsenal hosting Bayern, Chelsea welcoming Barca - and PSG taking on Tottenham (again) as we enter the latter stages of the league phase. We’ve got all the usual tales from across the leagues, including Marseille purring in Ligue 1 ahead of the visit of Newcastle on Tuesday night - as they put five past Nice in unkind fashion on Friday night. In Germany, Bayern gave Freiburg a two-goal head start but still managed to win 6-2, with Michael Olise turning on the style as he prepares to face former Palace teammate Eberechi Eze on Wednesday evening… The Serie A title race shows no sign of letting up as it was Milan who took the bragging rights in the Derby della Madonnina - but it’s Roma who lead the way at the top of the table as Evan Ferguson finally opened his account! While in Spain, there’s signs of discontent at Real Madrid as they dropped yet more points, this time at newly promoted Elche - and that’s before the news that Vini Jr and Xavi Alonso aren’t too chummy… more on that later in the week! Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Hellos, degrees - and moments of the weekend - (00.45) • PART 2: UCL MD5 key ties/ Ligue 1 review - João Neves = goal machine (11.10) • PART 3: More UCL fun/ Bundesliga review - Karl & Olise shine for Bayern (23.45) • PART 4: Serie A review - Milan is red and Bologna are great (40.00) • PART 5: La Liga review - Real drop more points as Antony sees red (53.00) Hosted on Acast. Crystal Palace with Ruaidhri McLaughlin-Dowd | Correspondent Week ep.12 | Planet FPL 2024/25

Day 3 of Correspondent Week concludes with Crystal Palace fan Ruaidhri McLaughlin-Dowd joining James to discuss his club who had an outstanding end to last season under Oliver Glasner and have a number of very interesting FPL assets. The futures of Marc Guehi and Ebe Eze are discussed and it's not implausible that both could follow Michael Olise through the exit door, and Ruaidhri has a warning for Fantasy owners of Eze even if it's confirmed he will stay. Jean-Phillipe Mateta couldn't stop scoring during the run-in but with him away at France and the Olympic final on Friday is he a likely absentee for the opener at Brentford? Plus, the new signings assessed (of which Ruaidhri currently has one for FPL), Joachim Andersen's high ownership, Daniel Munoz potential and the problem to picking the right 4.5 goalkeeper might have an answer. And are The Eagles the most likely team to break through into the top 8?
