Jimbo’s got Julien Laurens, Rory Smith, Seb Stafford-Bloor and Pol Ballús in tow to put all the action from across the continent under the microscope. Jimbo’s joined by his continental crew - James Horncastle, Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús and Seb Stafford-Bloor - to look back on the latest week of action from across Europe AND look ahead to the decisive Champions League matchday 8 ties. Nine teams have already been eliminated from the competition with three more to go, but can Manchester City avoid being one of them? Belgian football expert Kristof Terreur joins us to preview their must-win game against Club Brugge. Elsewhere, it’s also finely poised between Stuttgart and PSG who sit 24th and 22nd in the table… Back to domestic matters, and in Serie A Napoli continued their fine form and made it 7 wins on the bounce as they fought back from a goal to win 2-1 over Juventus and end their unbeaten record. Plus, drama at the San Siro as Conceição and Calabria almost came to blows… In La Liga Kylian Mbappé bagged his first hat-trick for Real Madrid as they went four points clear at the top of the table after a 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid. That’s after Atléti were held to a 1-1 draw with Villarreal, while Barcelona put just the seven past Valencia as they got back to winning ways in the league. Over in Germany, Bayern moved six points clear at the top after their 2-1 win at Freiburg, while closest rivals Leverkusen saw a two-goal lead evaporate as they were held by Leipzig. And in Ligue 1, PSG dropped points for the fifth time this season in a 1-1 draw with Reims at the Parc de Princes. Jimbo’s got his festive friends alongside him as Julien Laurens, James Horncastle and Pol Ballús bring the pre-Christmas cheer and reflect on all the action from across the continent. There was late, late drama in La Liga as Alexander Sørloth’s 96th minute goal made it 12 wins in a row for new league leaders Atleti following a 2-1 victory over Barcelona - who are down to third and in their worst run of form for over 20 years. Elsewhere, a certain Kylian Mbappé’s starting to look pretty good for Real Madrid… It was all about the Coupe de France in, well, France - including humiliation for Montpellier at the hands of fourth tier Le Puy Foot, memorable penalty saves and disappointment for Andy Carroll. Meanwhile in the Bundesliga it looks like we’ve got a two-horse race on our hands for the title, as Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen both registered big 5-1 wins to keep things nicely poised heading into die Winterpause. And it’s even tighter in Serie A, with Napoli just two points behind Atalanta - the leaders having extended their winning run to 11 straight games in a tight 3-2 victory at Empoli. Plus, we say goodbye to 2024 with some… potentially unconventional picks for our best moments of the past 12 months. Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moment of the weekend, festive plans and Christmas food (00.40) • PART 2: La Liga review - Sorloth stuns Barca and Mbappe finds his form (08.45) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - damaged Donnarumma and Coupe de France upsets (21.25) • PART 4: Bundesliga review - Bayern and Leverkusen bag five before die Winterpause (31.10) • PART 5: Serie A review - De Ketelaere stars as Napoli keep up the pace (34.55) • PART 6: Moments of 2024 - judo, comebacks and Knights (45.15) Hosted on Acast. Paris Saint-Germain surprised many during the summer transfer window by not finding a direct replacement for Kylian Mbappé (25) after his free transfer to Real Madrid. However, with Bradley Barcola’s (22) impressive start to the season, PSG may have validated their decision to skip signing another left-winger. Barcola, a former Lyon player, joined the Ligue 1 champions in the summer of 2023. Fans of Lyon were puzzled by his choice, given the fierce competition in Luis Enrique's forward line. Mbappé was seen as nearly irreplaceable in Paris, and with Barcola's preference for playing on the left, it seemed likely he would see limited playing time. Initially, that concern proved accurate, as the Lyon academy graduate struggled to secure a spot in the starting lineup early on. However, he gradually established himself as a reliable option next to Mbappé before the conclusion of the previous season. Now, with the France captain having moved to Spain, Barcola has emerged as a key player for PSG this season. Could he be the solution to filling the void left by Mbappé? Having started as a striker at Lyon's youth academy, scoring has always been part of Barcola's game, a facet he aimed to enhance. While he showed effectiveness in attacking positions during his time at PSG and Lyon, he often played a creative role rather than a finishing one, netting 9 goals in 51 appearances during his first two Ligue 1 seasons. This season, however, Barcola seems to have elevated his goal-scoring prowess. As of now, he leads the league with 6 goals in his first 6 matches. Despite starting every game, he hasn't played the full 90 minutes each time, totaling 374 minutes of action. His strike rate translates to a goal every 62 minutes, placing him among the elite in Europe. Since emerging at Lyon, Barcola has not lacked confidence, but the added responsibility this season has appeared to unlock new potential. He has assumed a leadership role in the attack, embodying the concept of leading by example through his performances. With remarkable skill and impressive dribbling, Barcola creates spectacular moments on the field. Defensively, his tireless work ethic and effectiveness in regaining possession make him a coach's ideal player. Compiling all his attributes, the 21-year-old has become essential this season, making the departure of Mbappé much more manageable for PSG.
Alexi Lalas and David Mosse breakdown the USMNT’s upcoming matches abroad, namely Christian Pulisic as he looks to continue his goal contribution streak. Has Pulisic reached “world class” status, or is there more he needs to accomplish first? Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright are set to face off this weekend in the Championship, and Josh Sargent looks to get back on track after a month without a goal. It is confirmed that Kylian Mbappe will be out for the Madrid Derby on Sunday and he will likely miss more time on the field. Alexi and Mosse also talk MLS Cup contenders and dark horses. (5:53) To wrap the pod, the guys answer a few questions on explaining USMNT to non-soccer fans, expanding MLS to Buffalo, and youth development in America. (38:00) Learn more about your ad choices. The supercomputer has chimed in on the Euros semi-finals and Luke and John Cross are NOT happy. Marcus, Luke and Andy preview Spain vs France tonight and try to figure out if Les Bleus can really grind Spain down with this whole 'not scoring goals' thing. We also give some deserved attention for one of the best football narratives in recent times: 38-year-old Jesús Navas being tasked with keeping Kylian Mbappé quiet. In more confusing events, the BBC double down on their 'Misstiano Penaldo' graphic, much to the fury of Cristiano Ronaldo's legion of fanboys, while French media spy on their own team. Come join us! Jimbo, Adrian Clarke and Benji Lanyado are in the studio after England fail to live up to expectations but Spain definitely don’t.
