The Blizzard: Spain 1-5 Netherlands, 2014

We’re heading back to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. The Guardian’s Jonathan Liew joins us to discuss the Netherlands’ 5-1 dismantling of Spain, as “Louis Van Gaal created something he loved - and then destroyed it.” Spain arrived at this tournament with the same formula that saw them win the preceding three as the likes of Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta looked to dominate possession. They took the lead and controlled the early exchanges in El Salvador but, with Louis van Gaal switching to a back three for this game, his Netherlands side took advantage of Spain's lethargic midfield. We discuss a fantastic game that featured scintillating goals from Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben, and saw the end of Spain’s possession-dominating era. Ramble Meets... Troy Townsend

To kick off 2020 on Football Ramble Daily, Andy Brassell is joined by Kick It Out’s Head of Development, Troy Townsend. In this exclusive interview Troy discusses his varied career as a cornerstone of the footballing community, as well as how football’s social climate has changed over his life as a football fan. From his love of Pelé and Brazil throughout the 1960s, to experiencing racism on the terraces as a fan, and coaching at a variety of grassroots clubs, Troy has led a fascinating life. And, as racism continues to pervade the game, he also discusses how seriously it can affect young black footballers as well as the hugely commendable and important work of Kick It Out. The Blizzard: Netherlands 1-2 West Germany, 1974

Today’s episode of Greatest Games features one of the most significant games in the history of European football: the 1974 World Cup final between West Germany and the Netherlands. We’re joined by author and journalist David Winner, the author of ‘Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football’ and former biographer of Dennis Bergkamp, to recount the arrival of Johan Cruyff and Total Football on the world stage. With no real previous World Cup pedigree, the Netherlands arrived at the final in Munich having played some truly astounding football. They topped their group and beat East Germany, Argentina and Brazil on their way to the final whilst conceding only one goal. David joins us to explore the build up to the game and the ‘tragic’ outcome of the match, as we dispel some of the the myths that surround the Dutch perceptions of this game. Fancy getting in touch? We’re off to the 2000 Intercontinental Cup final where Boca Juniors took on Real Madrid, and our tour guide for today is football writer and editor of Brazil Global Football Rupert Fryer! This was a hugely significant game for both sides; the Boca side featured three legends of the game fleetingly crossing paths, as manager Carlos Bianchi led a team featuring Juan Román Riquelme and Martín Palermo. Whilst on the Spanish side of the ledger, Luís Figo recently signalled the beginning of the Galáticos era by moving to Real as the world’s most expensive player.
