The Ramble: Liverpool take the points at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester are better than OK, and Watford finally win

Advantage Liverpool! Jurgen Klopp’s men struck a huge blow over their rivals in the race for the title, who themselves comfortably beat Arsenal at the King Power stadium the day before. Wolves impressed once again, while we’re starting to fear for Norwich after a home defeat to Watford. Where are you, Norwich? Let’s be ‘avin you. The Blizzard: Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal, 1989

For anyone who thinks the 2012 Aguero goal was the most startling finish to a top flight season, you’ve not looked back at the final day of the 1988/89 First Division. That’s where we are heading on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re joined by Amy Lawrence, journalist for The Athletic and author of 89: Arsenal’s Greatest Moment, Told in Our Own Words. She’s the perfect person to talk us through Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal, the title decider that came after every other English professional side had already finished their season. We discuss the game’s connection to the Hillsborough disaster just six weeks before, and the feeling of dread around the Arsenal camp leading up to a clash with their title rivals. Listen on for the story of one of the most dramatic matches in the history of the game in this country. Fancy getting in touch? Ramble Meets... Jason Bell & Osi Umenyiora

We’re doing something slightly different on today’s episode of Ramble Meets… as we swap pass backs for a pass rusher, and corner flags for a cornerback. We’re joined by two-time Super Bowl champion Osi Umenyiora and former Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and New York Giants cornerback Jason Bell. After two hugely successful careers, many of you will now know Jason and Osi as NFL broadcasters for the BBC and NFL UK. They join Luke for a discussion about the differences between the Premier League and the NFL featuring discussions around nutrition, player safety and trading - and they find stark comparisons between every NFL team having a decent shot at glory and the majority of Premier League sides languishing beneath the elite. With The Ramble off on their American sojourn, we’re here to take a look at all the action from Sunday’s Premier League fixtures! We begin with Everton and Spurs’ dreary draw, where the horrific injury to André Gomes was unfortunately the game’s biggest talking point. We also discuss the two teams’ respective struggles, before heading south to the other game from the day: Crystal Palace vs Leicester. It was another flying weekend for Jamie Vardy, and we discuss this Indian Summer he’s enjoying at the twilight of his career. We also get to some of your correspondence! At The Match: Union 1-0 Hertha, November 2019

At The Match returns for a big one - it's the first-ever top flight meeting between Berlin's two premier clubs, Union and Hertha, as the former mark their debut campaign amongst the elite. In an intense atmosphere between clubs that played in different national leagues until Germany reunification in 1990, Andy speaks to Union social media guru Ross Dunbar about the club's stratospheric rise in the two years that he has been there. Then, after Union's historic win, we catch up with Hertha defender Dedryck Boyata, supporter Marcel on the away fans' experience and finally Union spokesman Christian Arbeit on a long day ultimately becoming a rewarding one. The Ramble: Late winners from Liverpool and Man City, a big win for Newcastle, and more beige gruel for Man United fans

The weekend’s football looked like it was going to be full of surprises until it wasn’t, as Man City and Liverpool kept up their intriguing ding dong, followed by some mind games from Pep, while plucky Man United tried their best against Bournemouth but continued to struggle at this level. Andy Carroll got onto the pitch though, and in a Newcastle win! So that was nice. Aside from this Jim unfairly slanders Tyrone Mings, we hear about Rafael van der Vaart’s change of career and for some reason Liz Taylor makes her Ramble debut. The Blizzard: Fulham 4-1 Juventus, 2010

Jonathan has to deal with an exceedingly giddy Marcus on today’s episode of Greatest Games, produced in association with The Blizzard. We’re here to discuss the 2009-10 UEFA Cup- specifically Fulham’s spectacular 4-1 win over Juventus on their route to the final, alongside journalist and author Philippe Auclair. Throughout a season that saw Fulham play over 60 games, managed by the underrated Roy Hodgson, there were some truly memorable midweek nights at Craven Cottage- but this was the pinnacle. An admittedly ageing and unspectacular Juventus side brought a 3-1 lead back from Turin but it proved insufficient, as Fulham secured qualification with a fantastic result. Marcus’ giddy aunt, indeed. Fancy getting in touch? Email us at [email protected] or find us social media— just search 'Football Ramble Daily'. The Preview Show: A madness at Anfield, Southampton travel to Man City for a whoopin' and Man United go to Bournemouth

A night of absolute chaos at Anfield as Liverpool were victorious over Arsenal on penalties after a pulsating 5-5 draw. Is it time for Jose Mourinho to step in at The Emirates? NO. NO IT IS NOT. Arsenal host Wolves next, so we naturally discuss Nuno Espirito Santo’s attempt to balance such animals and how Halloween might effect the game, while we also look at Southampton’s potential destruction at the hands of Man City, Man United and Norwich making trips to the south coast to visit Bournemouth and Brighton, respectively. Will Daniel Farke be shouting yet? We can but wonder. Elsewhere more on Bruges, yet more Bristolian controversy and all the usual nonsense. On The Continent: Thiago Motta returns to Genoa, Dick Advocaat steps in at Feyenoord, and Atléti head to Sevilla

After a midweek packed full of continental football, Luke’s back at Football Ramble Daily HQ to run through it all alongside our continental compatriots James Horncastle and Andy Brassell! Ya! We begin over in Serie A and, as many listeners have been asking about him, discuss Thiago Motta’s recent appointment as the new coach of Genoa. There’s also talk about yesterday’s humdinger between Napoli and Atalanta, and Fiorentina favourite Franc Ribery earning himself a three match ban for pushing a referee. Elsewhere, Andy talks us through the links between Patrick Viera and the Arsenal job, as well as Dick Advocaat being confirmed as Jaap Stam’s replacement as coach of Feyenoord. And if you think we don’t have time for chat about GoldenEye and airports then you, dear listener, are greatly mistaken. Jules has just about recovered from the high of seeing Brighton first on the Match of the Day running order to hotfoot it to the studio for today’s episode! After the booing aimed at Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka on Sunday and some Southampton fans demanding a refund after their humbling loss against Leicester, we explore what fans can rightfully expect from their club. The Ramble: Liverpool win again, Leicester gub Southampton, and a bad ebening for Arsenal

Another excellent weekend of football, the plucky little game that’s really starting to take hold. Liverpool earned a hard fought three points against Spurs, Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic dazzled and Arsenal vs Crystal Palace once again did justice to the hashtag #arscry That’s not to forget Friday night’s game, (oh) when the Saints went piling in and Leicester City played like a team possessed (by Luke), setting a Premier League record for an away win as they eviscerated Southampton. Gubba lubba dub dub! As well as that we rank Belgian cities, there are imaginary chat shows, a pizza related injury and an early musical entry for our Christmas lists. We're currently on tour! The Blizzard: Netherlands 1-2 West Germany, 1974

Today’s episode of Greatest Games features one of the most significant games in the history of European football: the 1974 World Cup final between West Germany and the Netherlands. We’re joined by author and journalist David Winner, the author of ‘Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football’ and former biographer of Dennis Bergkamp, to recount the arrival of Johan Cruyff and Total Football on the world stage. With no real previous World Cup pedigree, the Netherlands arrived at the final in Munich having played some truly astounding football. They topped their group and beat East Germany, Argentina and Brazil on their way to the final whilst conceding only one goal. David joins us to explore the build up to the game and the ‘tragic’ outcome of the match, as we dispel some of the the myths that surround the Dutch perceptions of this game. Fancy getting in touch? There’s been plenty of good stuff going on at the top of the football pyramid but forget all that (for now) because Big Sol Campbell is back! Southend United have done us all a favour and installed the big man as their manager. More as we get it. We also look ahead to an Anfield thigh-rubber, a hair-based conspiracy, the wolf-like Christian Pulisic and Newcastle’s St James’ Park fortress. On The Continent: Midweek Champions League madness, Cagliari's centenary, and Atletico's stuttering start

We’re back with another episode of On The Continent, serving up another slice of Champions League reaction on this fine Thursday! We discuss Kylian Mbappé coming off the bench and casually notching a perfect hat-trick as PSG swept aside Club Brugge, as well as important midweek wins for Inter and Atlético. The latter have had a tough time of late, and Andy breaks down their poor start that’s found them in sixth place and with an injured João Félix. Elsewhere there’s time for discussions on Cagliari’s impressive start to their Serie A campaign as they celebrate their centenary season and the longlist for this year’s Ballon d’Or. Magnifique! Jules & Andy: Spurs look lost, Haringey Borough abandon a game in protest, and the Champions League group stages return

Andy’s been to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and that’s where we begin on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. We discuss Tottenham’s ultimately underwhelming result against Watford and ask why Spurs have lost the dynamism that typified their early seasons under Mauricio Pochettino. We then again turn our attention to the fight against racism in football, as players at Haringey Borough walked off in protest during their game against Yeovil. Jules worked on the game for BT Sport and gives some further details on what was one of the hardest days of her professional career. We round off the chat with a look ahead to the Champions League this week, as the group stage fully gets into its stride! We're currently on tour! The Ramble: Liverpool still unbeaten, Everton pick up, and Villa turn it around

Man United brought an end to Liverpool’s perfect start, all among a sea of digs from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a Sky Sports studio panel that were set up to put the boot well and truly in. Elsewhere, Jack Grealish shone for Aston Villa and Marco Silva’s Everton seemed to listen to Everton’s Marco Silva for once as they secured a comfortable win over West Ham. If that’s all a bit serious, never fear, we’re still idiots so naturally there’s plenty of discussion of sausage pipes, footballers’ surprising full names and frankly unworkable VAR alternatives. The Blizzard: Aberdeen 3-2 Bayern Munich, 1983

On today’s Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by author and Sunday Times’ Chief Football Writer Jonathan Northcroft! He joins us to talk about “the greatest experience he’s ever had watching football”. After winning the Scottish Cup the previous season Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen side swept through the early rounds - conceding only one goal - and then drew the first leg of this quarter-final 0-0 in Munich, which was a success in itself. Ferguson then deployed some fantastic ruses to ensure the German side and travelling press pack underestimated Aberdeen, including a chaotic training session involving wayward passes hitting teammates in the head! But what followed was one of the most glorious ninety minutes of football The Dons’ fans will ever see. Jonathan talks through what it was like watching the game on the terraces as Aberdeen executed Ferguson’s tactics perfectly, and knocked out one of European football’s aristocrats. We discuss the awful scenes in Bulgaria and what comes next - as well as England’s excellent performance on the pitch - Ireland’s disappointing night in Switzerland and the return of the Premier League. Alongside all that Pete thinks he watched North Korea vs South Korea, Marcus submits a thesis and the Gareth Southgate to Man United rumour train leaves the station, as well as some spittings, huggings and muggings. On The Continent: Catalunyan protests spiral, Ranieri's Italian revival, and Allegri's potential arrival

The gang are back together for another episode of On The Continent, and we begin with the troubles in Catalunya. Elsewhere, we discuss some managerial movements in Serie A— Tuttosport has reported that Max Allegri is being lined up to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Old Trafford. There’s also a welcome return for everyone’s friendly neighbour Claudio Ranieri, as he takes over at Sampdoria. Ramble Meets... Nigel Winterburn

Across a career spanning 22 years and over 700 senior appearances, Nigel Winterburn developed a reputation as a fiercely competitive and reliable operator at the top of the game under varied managers, from Dave Bassett to Arsene Wenger. In this exclusive interview with Football Ramble Daily, the Arsenal and England left back divulges exactly what it takes to be a pro footballer, how different he was on the pitch when compared to everyday life, and why he hardly ever used his right foot. Jules & Andy: Abhorrent racist abuse, England’s united response, and impressive individual performances

On what should have been a night for analysing England’s impressive performance in Bulgaria, racist abuse from the stands is, rightly, the main focus on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. We discuss the dignified response of the England players and staff, the unprecedented actions taken by UEFA and how this abuse can be stamped out at future matches. There’s also time for deserved praise for the likes of Raheem Sterling and Tyrone Mings, the latter hugely impressive on his international debut, who are sought out for comment by the media spotlight on occasions like this. We do manage to talk about England’s hugely impressive display on the pitch and take stock of where this England team are, eight months out from Euro 2020. We're currently on tour! The Ramble: England stumble, Wales earn a hard fought point, and Scotland stun San Marino

Oof, England’s visit to Prague wasn’t the stroll in the park many anticipated it being. It was more like a stumble into some stinging nettles because you were looking at your phone and had assumed the whole thing would be straightforward. Things were better over in Wales, as Gareth Bale’s brilliance earned the home side a point, while Andorra won their first ever European Championship qualifier and and John “Bangin’ ‘em in” McGinn kept up his goalscoring form. The Blizzard: Boca Juniors 2-1 Real Madrid, 2000

Hola y bienvenido to another episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re off to the 2000 Intercontinental Cup final where Boca Juniors took on Real Madrid, and our tour guide for today is football writer and editor of Brazil Global Football Rupert Fryer! This was a hugely significant game for both sides; the Boca side featured three legends of the game fleetingly crossing paths, as manager Carlos Bianchi led a team featuring Juan Román Riquelme and Martín Palermo. Whilst on the Spanish side of the ledger, Luís Figo recently signalled the beginning of the Galáticos era by moving to Real as the world’s most expensive player. He was backed up by a team that included Guti, Raúl and Steve McManaman and was manager by legendary coach Vicente del Bosque. The Preview Show: Euro 2020 qualifiers, Sergio Ramos and, of course… Coleen Rooney vs Rebekah Vardy

International breaks can sometimes make for a dearth of talking points, but not today! DI Coleen Rooney has been sleuthing and she’s uncovered some suspicious activity on Instagram. In a slightly less charged battle North Korea take on South Korea, while England revisit the scene of many, many appalling stags as they take on the Czech Republic in Prague. With Andy Brassell away on various continental crusades, we’ve got Lars Sivertsen on today’s On The Continent, alongside messrs Moore and Horncastle. After beginning with renewed praise for Lars’ goalscoring compatriot Erling Braut Håland, we discuss the fallout from St-Étienne’s last gasp win over Lyon in Le Derby. With the recent launch of his new book, Even Heskey Scored, Emile speaks to Luke about his storied 24-year professional career. From breaking through at Leicester City at 17, to winning a hatful of trophies with Liverpool and earning 64 international caps, this candid interview gives a unique insight into a man at the heart of England’s ‘Golden Generation.’ Emile also discusses the importance of team benefitting from his talents rather than chasing individual statistics, the atmosphere around the England squad throughout the 2000s and the burgeoning discussions around mental health in modern football. Jules & Andy: A superb win for Brighton, Southampton struggle on, and worries for Marco Silva

Of course, there’s only one place we’re starting on this week’s episode of Jules & Andy: Brighton’s cracking win against Spurs. Jules, our delighted Brighton representative, recounts her recent meeting with manager Graham Potter and discusses how much the team have improved under his tenure. There’s even time for a Wimbledon update from Andy, since they won as well! Halcyon days indeed. Elsewhere, we take a look at struggles further down the south coast at Southampton who have gone three league games without a win. There’s some praise for their weekend opponents Chelsea- Willian in particular- and we also try to unpick Marco Silva’s troubles at Everton. The Blizzard: Benfica 5-3 Real Madrid, 1962

Join Marcus Speller and Jonathan Wilson, this time alongside author and commentator David Bolchover, for another episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Today we’re heading back to 1962 to celebrate one of the most influential figures in 20th century football: Béla Guttmann. His Benfica side beat Real Madrid 5-3 in the 1962 European Cup final, and this extraordinary game was entirely reflective of an extraordinary man. After arriving at Benfica, having won the league the season before with Porto, Guttmann immediately sacked twenty first team players. He then took Benfica to two Primeira Divisāo titles and a triumph in the previous European Cup, before meeting five-time winners Real Madrid in the 1962 final in Amsterdam. A thrilling, chaotic game featuring a Ferenc Puskás hat-trick finished 5-3 to Benfica, with Guttmann cementing himself as one of the finest coaches of any generation. Fancy getting in touch? The Preview Show: A nightmare for Spurs, a stern test for Leicester and a potential thriller at St James’ Park

Marcus’ giddy aunt, Ruddy Nora and Gordon Bennett were all present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Bayern Munich continued their sustained efforts to destroy all football in North London with a comprehensive battering of Spurs. Can they put it right against Brighton? Liverpool had a strange Champions League experience themselves, and entertain Leicester and the disrespect-machine that is Jamie Vardy on Saturday. We also look ahead to Norwich hosting Aston Villa and Man United heading up to Newcastle, if only to see if both teams can remember what sport they play. On The Continent: Champions League roundup, Balo's back at Brescia, and Le Derby comes to Saint-Etienne

It’s time for another Champions League recap, as James and Andy are in situ for more continental coverage. We begin with Bayern’s tonking win over Spurs, thanks to four goals from Arsenal legend Serge Gnabry. We also take a look at some of your correspondence regarding Niko Kovač, and whether some of the doubts over his qualities have been alleviated, and we consider Bayern’s prospects for the season. Elsewhere, we discuss Real Madrid’s laboured, and largely undeserved, draw against Club Brugge, as well as revelling in the return of Mario Balotelli and Brescia. We also squeeze in a Ligue 1 roundup and look ahead to Le Derby this Sunday, as Saint-Étienne host Lyon! Ramble Meets... Maggie Murphy

On today’s episode of Ramble Meets… Andy Brassell is off to Lewes FC in Sussex to meet their general manager, Maggie Murphy. Lewes FC are one of the most forward-thinking clubs in the country and pay their men and women teams equally, with both sides drawing from the same cumulative revenue and sharing the famous pitch at The Dripping Pan. Andy joins Maggie in one of their pitch side beach huts to discuss scoring a hat-trick at her now-home for Shanklin Ladies when she was thirteen, her record breaking work with Equal Playing Field, her twenty-year footballing career and the potential legacy from the recent women’s World Cup. It’s a fascinating listen, as Maggie remains at the forefront of the advancement of gender equality within football and wider society. Jules & Andy: Arsenal stutter on, Man United slip to eleventh, and more troubles on Tyneside

It's time for a brand new episode of Jules & Andy, hot off the press after Monday Night Football! We delve into that slightly underwhelming affair between Man United and Arsenal, before discussing the sides' capacity for any sort of success this season. We then head north to Tyneside to try and understand what's been going wrong at Newcastle. With Rafa Benitez out and Steve Bruce cautiously drinking from the poisoned chalice, we ask what can be done to restore some hope to a proud footballing city. We also get to some of your correspondence, which includes chat on VAR and Australian pizza shops! The Ramble: Liverpool edge past Sheffield United, Villa struggle, and Watford are officially terrible

Sheffield United came so close to earning a point against Liverpool only for young Dean Henderson to make a costly mistake. Chris Wilder’s response was less arm-around-the-shoulder and more foot-square-in-the-nuts. IT’S THE ONLY WAY HE’LL LEARN. Elsewhere in the Football Universe, Wolves got a much needed win, the magnetic Slaven Bilic marches on with West Brom, we hear of ill-disciplined ball boys, Mario Balotelli makes a welcome return and Mike Dean steals the show in another sport all together. The Blizzard: Rangers 2-2 Celtic, 1987

There are some football derbies that transcend the ninety minutes on the pitch and the few annual fixtures, and instead become knitted into the fabric of the societies they inhabit. The Old Firm Derby is one of the definitive derbies in world football and we’re heading to the 1987 tie between Rangers and Celtic for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re joined by Guardian sports writer Scott Murray to discuss a truly incendiary affair - Graeme Souness’ Rangers had suffered a turgid start to the league campaign and hadn’t won the title for nine seasons, while Billy McNeil’s Celtic were flying. The two sides met in front of 44,000 people at Ibrox for one of the craziest matches you’ll ever see. Four goals, red cards, fights and a retrospective police enquiry— this game had it all... The Preview Show: Giant killings in the Carabao Cup, the return of the Premier League, and more horse bothering

A man’s punched a horse again and there’s really nowhere else to start. This time it was a Portsmouth fan. We don’t know why supporters of our teams keep doing this and we assure you we’re not involved. Away from that there was an actual Carabao Cup game as Southampton won THE South Coast derby, while Spurs went out to Lolchester on penalties and Old Man Milner helped Liverpool past MK Dons. We also hear of a potential fix for VAR’s offside problem, another ding dong between Mo Salah and the Egyptian FA, and a potential pay day for Mino. We're on tour! On The Continent: Neymar's quest for forgiveness, Famalicão's fantastic start, and this weekend's Madrid derby

Andy’s flown back in from Milan this morning, just in time for a brand new episode of On The Continent! We begin with a look at two sides struggling at opposite ends of Ligue 1, as PSG lost their second of the season against perennially-underrated Reims and Monaco won their first league game in seven attempts. We then discuss the remarkable underdog story in Liga Nos, as Famalicão are top of the table after six matches— where can they realistically expect to finish this season? There’s also praise for Chris Smalling’s impressive Roma debut, questions about whether Romelu Lukaku suits Antonio Conte’s requirements and a preview of this weekend’s Madrid derby! Jules & Andy: Questions for Crystal Palace, joy for Leicester, and problems at Stockley Park

On today’s episode of Jules & Andy we begin with a look at Crystal Palace and their place among the pack of varying mediocrity in the Premier League. Does this represent a wider problem? What can owners, players and fans of these clubs realistically strive for in these modern times of financial and commercial inequality? We then take stock of Leicester hugely impressive start to the season and assess where Brendan Rodgers’ side may be able to reach. There’s also time for an inevitable (but entirely necessary) chat about VAR, where both Jules and Andy have some ideas as to how the implementation of this technology can be improved! The Ramble: Man City smash Watford, VAR perplexes Spurs and Man United lumber on

New manager bounce, you say? Oh no, Watford, there will be none of that. Man City got back to their ruthless best this weekend, while Liverpool saw off the plucky underdogs of Chelsea and Spurs lost at Leicester because Son Heung-min sloppily strayed a few atoms offside. Down in London, Man United continue to suffer the fate of whatever Faustian bargain they must have made, while Arsenal won a fraught and at times ridiculous game with Aston Villa, because Arsenal gonna Arsenal. The Blizzard: Maccabi vs Hapoel, 1928

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by Nicholas Blincoe, the author of ‘More Noble Than War: A Football History of Israel and Palestine.’ We’re heading to that part of the world for today’s match as we take a look at the 1928 Tel Aviv Derby, where Maccabi took on Hapoel for the first time. In these clubs’ formative years, football was an entirely different proposition in Israel-Palestine. Initially seen as too individualistic a sport, it was gradually introduced by the British military and helped by mass immigration of younger people from Austro-Hungarian cities after the First World War. Jonathan, Marcus and Nicholas discuss the background around the two sides, each formed of an entirely different demographic, as well as the 3-0 Maccabi win and its historical significance. The Preview Show: A South Coast derby, Liverpool travel to Chelsea, and Spurs visit Leicester

And so to the South Coast for one of the biggest games of the season (apparently) as Southampton host Bournemouth, while Chelsea host Liverpool, desperately hoping they won’t win a penalty as they simply have no way of knowing what will happen if they do. The true main event is of course Sean Dyche vs Daniel Farke. Will it be Burnley or Norwich who take home the points? Who cares? This one is all about the eclectic sounds of the post match interviews. Alongside all this there’s a cheese-based blast from the past, an injustice for Jeff Hendrick and further ear worms. Brie you later. Our live tour starts very soon! On The Continent: PSG put a marker down, Napoli beat the holders, and Erling Braut Håland bags another hat-trick

The first round of Champions League fixtures is done and dusted, and we’re here to break it all down! We begin with Real Madrid’s loss to a surprisingly industrious PSG, as Ángel Di María put his former employers to the sword— is Zinedine Zidane’s job already at risk? We then round up the fortunes of the Italian sides with James, as Napoli earned a hard-fought victory over Liverpool and Inter drew with Slavia Prague. There’s also some deserved praise for goalscoring machine Erling Braut Håland after his amazing hat-trick for Salzburg. Our live tour starts very soon!
