Mi ricordo però che ero molto, molto veloce. All’epoca non esistevano i campi a cinque, a sette o a nove: si giocava direttamente a undici, su campi grandi. I numeri certificano tutto: tiri, tocchi, errori.

Steve Crossman sits down with Brentford’s Fabio Carvalho and club psychologist Michael Caulfield to discuss how the club’s culture of talking openly has helped their players. Michael installed a bench at the training ground, dubbed Michael’s bench, where players can discuss what is on their mind and share. It has been such a success that the club have installed three more benches at the training ground for their Academy teams and are now putting up more benches around the local community, encourage people to talk to help with their mental health. In an honest interview, Fabio discusses the difficulties he faced as a young man moving from Portugal, how faith and removing himself from social media has helped him and how he thinks modern footballers could benefit from having deeper conversations and sharing their struggles.

This week we have 2 hours with Dave Jones where we are trying to get to the bottom of why on earth he thought Parkin was the answer. Along the way we hear stories of the financial struggle Cardiff went through and how he had to hijack players on motorways to get them to come to Cardiff. While at Southampton Jones was falsely accused of abuse allegations which ultimately led to his dismissal and a great deal of mental stress, with football being his escape during his period. We also dig down on his recruitment strategy which is like a half way house for players with 'flawed' lives off the pitch that other clubs don't want to touch and just how Jones managed to get the best out of them. David Forde is with us this week. For a bloke who has quit playing football countless times Forde managed to carve out a great career and cement himself as a Millwall legend. Forde has suffered with performance anxiety for large parts of his career and often found himself skipping training to travel to India to practice meditation to help him battle this and find a new form of focus. After getting a 2 week fine while playing in the Welsh league Forde was ready to quit football and move back to Ireland but in a very quick U-turn he got a move to West Ham and was training with his hero David James. In a career spanning across 20 years Forde has had his fair share of encounters with mavericks including Martin Allen, Di Canio & Stephen Bywater. While at Millwall he saw everything a Millwall legend would have; promotions, relegations, fights, smoking cigars at Wembley after winning in the play-offs and of course the elbow Jermaine Beckford. On this week’s episode on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, we are joined by former Wales captain and Premier League footballer turned coach Craig Bellamy. Craig takes on Gary at the Cube in Manchester before a fascinating sit-down interview. Having clocked up over 500 professional appearances and represented nine clubs over a career that spanned almost 20 years, Bellamy does not lack in stories to tell. Find out how much of a big influence legendary boss Bobby Robson was at Newcastle United before an acrimonious fall-out with Graeme Souness led to a St James Park departure. Hear the full anecdote on his infamous Golf attack at Liverpool and which other member of the squad was involved in a separate incident on the same night. Bellamy also reveals where he was told to look for another club under Rafa Benitez. Craig reveals his own mental health battles from childhood through to career injuries and the impact of losing a close friend and former-team mate Gary Speed. Finally, we talk about how the Cardiff-born man has ventured into coaching through his love of the tactical side of the game and how he won’t be changing his philosophy any time soon.
