Chelsea's Roman Empire: The Abramovich Takeover

Welcome to the latest episode of The Overlap’s football history podcast, It Was What It Was. This week Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper tell the story of probably the most-consequential football club takeover ever: When Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003. Before sportswashing was even a word and in an age when Financial Fair Play didn’t exist, we examine the background to the most-startling and unexpected deal in Premier League history. And the extraordinary impact it would make, as Chelsea splurged what was at the time an eye-watering £100m in that first summer transfer window, laying the foundations for Chelsea to become a super club that would win 18 major trophies in the Roman era. It transformed the Premier League, threatened Fergie, ruined the latter years of Arsene Wenger’s career, caused UEFA to dream up new FFP rules to curb them and paved the way for the era of nation state investors at Manchester City, Paris St Germain and Newcastle United. It Was What it Was goes back to that stunning summer which changed the game and debates whether football was ever the same after the Roman Conquest. Please subscribe to never miss an episode. Everton with Sean Norton | Correspondent Week ep.5 | Planet FPL 2024/25

Planet FPL Correspondent Mini-League Winner Sean Norton joins James to kick off Day 2 of Correspondent Week by discussing all things Everton including interest in their FPL assets, particularly the defensive one's. The Toffees go into this season having had two attempted club Takeovers collapse and it's to be their final campaign at Goodison Park. What would constitute making their final season at their current home a success? Does it need to be more than just survival? There will be interest in Everton defensive assets but Jordan Pickford, Jarrod Branthwaite and James Tarkowski are now 5.0. Should managers look at a 4.5 alternative for coverage? Plus, there's discussion on Everton's new signings and whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin can be relied upon to lead the line on a consistent basis. How Dyche got Everton out of trouble

Four weeks on from being hit with a record Premier league points deduction, Everton's fighting spirit is undeniable... After four wins on the bounce, the Toffees already clear of the drop-zone - and in fact - if their appeal was successful they'd be firmly in the race for European football. So how has Sean Dyche masterminded their escape, and with a takeover and the January transfer window looming - are they out of trouble just yet? Ayo Akinwolere is joined by The Athletic's David Ornstein, Jacob Whitehead and Everton correspondent Patrick Boyland to discuss. Chelsea v Bournemouth | CotC with @Phantomantle & @AFCBNG | Planet FPL 2022/23

On the return of Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Chelsea fan Gary Mantle and Bournemouth fan Neil Grover to discuss the latest at their clubs ahead of the return of Premier League Football. It's 5 league games without a win for Chelsea, is Graham Potter already under pressure from Blues fans? Can they get themselves back in contention for the top 4? And with a trip to Nottingham Forest and a Double gameweek following the visit of Bournemouth who are the best Chelsea assets for FPL managers? Will it simply come down to who's fit for selection? While for Bournemouth a club takeover is still 'imminent' and Gary O'Neil has been appointed manager permanently, but is it underwhelming for Cherries fan following links with Marcelo Bielsa? Bournemouth too have some appealing enablers for FPL managers but do Fulham's fixtures mean they'll be overlooked? Business of Sport: Hibs owner on trying to topple Old Firm + Hostile takeover at Rochdale

Mark Chapman and The Athletic's Matt Slater take a trip north of the border as they are joined by Hibs owner Ron Gordon, who has a fascinating story. Arriving in Edinburgh via a life that started in Peru, passed through Laos with the CIA, before becoming a successful media entrepreneur in the US, he joins us with insight into why he bought the club, the challenges of trying to compete with Celtic and Rangers and his thoughts on the growth potential for Scottish football as a whole. We're also joined by the Rochdale chairman Simon Gauge after a tumultuous few months that has seen the club trying to fend off a hostile takeover by two businessmen, but with the takeover having fallen apart we get an update into exactly what went on and have a wider discussion about the threats many EFL clubs face from potential new owners and the challenges the EFL has in trying to adequately assess the suitability of anyone wanting to buy a football club. And staying with the subject of ownership wrangles, Swindon Town have also been the subjected of a protracted row over who owns the club so we speak to newly appointed CEO Rob Angus for the latest and get some insight into what it's like to go from working in banking to all of a sudden being charged with running a League Two football club. Newcastle with @fpl_fitballer - Correspondent Week ep 3 | Planet #FPL

Day 1 of Planet FPL's Correspondent Week concludes with Simon Bibby joining Suj & James to discuss all things about Si's club Newcastle United. Is it a case of Callum Wilson or nothing from an FPL perspective? The case is made for Newcastle's talisman and a there's a warning that his consistency shouldn't neccessary be overlooked. There's frustration about the classification of some of the FPL assets but there could be some cheap enablers who appeal (The Sports Direct bench!), but there is an ongoing Goalkeeper crisis to be conscious of. And the proposed Takeover of the club will drag on until at least 2022 and Steve Bruce looks set to stay as manager. Si gives his opinion on why it's likely to be same old, same old for his club this season... but should we be taking more note of their brilliant and almost unnoticed end of season form...?
