His Benfica side beat Real Madrid 5-3 in the 1962 European Cup final, and this extraordinary game was entirely reflective of an extraordinary man. He then took Benfica to two Primeira Divisāo titles and a triumph in the previous European Cup, before meeting five-time winners Real Madrid in the 1962 final in Amsterdam. This episode came immediately following the absolute slaughter of Tottenham Hotspur at the hands of the Bundesliga giant, Bayern Munich.
