Today’s episode of Greatest Games features one of the most significant games in the history of European football: the 1974 World Cup final between West Germany and the Netherlands. We’re joined by author and journalist David Winner, the author of ‘Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football’ and former biographer of Dennis Bergkamp, to recount the arrival of Johan Cruyff and Total Football on the world stage. With no real previous World Cup pedigree, the Netherlands arrived at the final in Munich having played some truly astounding football. They topped their group and beat East Germany, Argentina and Brazil on their way to the final whilst conceding only one goal. David joins us to explore the build up to the game and the ‘tragic’ outcome of the match, as we dispel some of the the myths that surround the Dutch perceptions of this game. Fancy getting in touch? There’s been plenty of good stuff going on at the top of the football pyramid but forget all that (for now) because Big Sol Campbell is back! Southend United have done us all a favour and installed the big man as their manager. More as we get it. We also look ahead to an Anfield thigh-rubber, a hair-based conspiracy, the wolf-like Christian Pulisic and Newcastle’s St James’ Park fortress. There’s also time for Burnley-as-furniture, our own boring dreams and some listener fashion tips. Get involved for goodness sake. We're on tour, and playing the Tyne Theatre & Opera House tonight! On today’s Ramble Meets… Andy Brassell sits down with Robert Klein, the CEO of Bundesliga International. Robert is responsible for promoting the Bundesliga brand and its football following to a wider audience. With Robert promoting a style of football he believes to be a combination of Premier League physicality and Spanish technicality, Bundesliga International have been setting up local offices in worldwide markets to appeal to brand new audiences. He sits down with Andy in this insightful interview to discuss how the Bundesliga’s commercial style differs from the Premier League, the immense international profiles of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and young British players broadening their horizons while playing in Germany. Man United brought an end to Liverpool’s perfect start, all among a sea of digs from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a Sky Sports studio panel that were set up to put the boot well and truly in. Elsewhere, Jack Grealish shone for Aston Villa and Marco Silva’s Everton seemed to listen to Everton’s Marco Silva for once as they secured a comfortable win over West Ham. If that’s all a bit serious, never fear, we’re still idiots so naturally there’s plenty of discussion of sausage pipes, footballers’ surprising full names and frankly unworkable VAR alternatives. We discuss the awful scenes in Bulgaria and what comes next - as well as England’s excellent performance on the pitch - Ireland’s disappointing night in Switzerland and the return of the Premier League. Alongside all that Pete thinks he watched North Korea vs South Korea, Marcus submits a thesis and the Gareth Southgate to Man United rumour train leaves the station, as well as some spittings, huggings and muggings. The gang are back together for another episode of On The Continent, and we begin with the troubles in Catalunya. We discuss the protests that have caused Barcelona to change their travel plans for their upcoming trip to Eibar, as well the possibility of moving next week’s El Clasico. Elsewhere, we discuss some managerial movements in Serie A— Tuttosport has reported that Max Allegri is being lined up to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Old Trafford. There’s also a welcome return for everyone’s friendly neighbour Claudio Ranieri, as he takes over at Sampdoria. Across a career spanning 22 years and over 700 senior appearances, Nigel Winterburn developed a reputation as a fiercely competitive and reliable operator at the top of the game under varied managers, from Dave Bassett to Arsene Wenger. In this exclusive interview with Football Ramble Daily, the Arsenal and England left back divulges exactly what it takes to be a pro footballer, how different he was on the pitch when compared to everyday life, and why he hardly ever used his right foot. On what should have been a night for analysing England’s impressive performance in Bulgaria, racist abuse from the stands is, rightly, the main focus on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. We discuss the dignified response of the England players and staff, the unprecedented actions taken by UEFA and how this abuse can be stamped out at future matches. There’s also time for deserved praise for the likes of Raheem Sterling and Tyrone Mings, the latter hugely impressive on his international debut, who are sought out for comment by the media spotlight on occasions like this. We do manage to talk about England’s hugely impressive display on the pitch and take stock of where this England team are, eight months out from Euro 2020. We're currently on tour! International breaks can sometimes make for a dearth of talking points, but not today! DI Coleen Rooney has been sleuthing and she’s uncovered some suspicious activity on Instagram. In a slightly less charged battle North Korea take on South Korea, while England revisit the scene of many, many appalling stags as they take on the Czech Republic in Prague. With Andy Brassell away on various continental crusades, we’ve got Lars Sivertsen on today’s On The Continent, alongside messrs Moore and Horncastle. After beginning with renewed praise for Lars’ goalscoring compatriot Erling Braut Håland, we discuss the fallout from St-Étienne’s last gasp win over Lyon in Le Derby. The fortunes of the two managers could not be more different, as Claude Puel got his dream start as Saint-Étienne coach and Sylvinho subsequently lost his job in the Lyon dugout. Elsewhere, we discuss Freiburg’s hugely impressive start to the Bundesliga season under long-serving coach Christian Streich. We also get a Milan roundup from James, after Stefano Pioli replaces Marco Giampaolo in the Milanese hot seat, and Lars gives us a preview of Norway’s upcoming EURO 2020 qualifiers! On today’s episode of Ramble Meets… we welcome former Leicester, Liverpool and England legend Emile Heskey! With the recent launch of his new book, Even Heskey Scored, Emile speaks to Luke about his storied 24-year professional career. From breaking through at Leicester City at 17, to winning a hatful of trophies with Liverpool and earning 64 international caps, this candid interview gives a unique insight into a man at the heart of England’s ‘Golden Generation.’ Emile also discusses the importance of team benefitting from his talents rather than chasing individual statistics, the atmosphere around the England squad throughout the 2000s and the burgeoning discussions around mental health in modern football. Of course, there’s only one place we’re starting on this week’s episode of Jules & Andy: Brighton’s cracking win against Spurs. Jules, our delighted Brighton representative, recounts her recent meeting with manager Graham Potter and discusses how much the team have improved under his tenure. There’s even time for a Wimbledon update from Andy, since they won as well! Halcyon days indeed. Elsewhere, we take a look at struggles further down the south coast at Southampton who have gone three league games without a win. There’s some praise for their weekend opponents Chelsea- Willian in particular- and we also try to unpick Marco Silva’s troubles at Everton. A weekend full of surprises as Man City, Spurs and Man United lose after limp displays— but what a day for Steve Bruce and Matty Longstaff! No Brucey belly rub for Man United this time. Could the Longstaffs be the new Ameobis? Bruce in! Marcus’ giddy aunt, Ruddy Nora and Gordon Bennett were all present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Bayern Munich continued their sustained efforts to destroy all football in North London with a comprehensive battering of Spurs. Can they put it right against Brighton? Liverpool had a strange Champions League experience themselves, and entertain Leicester and the disrespect-machine that is Jamie Vardy on Saturday. We also look ahead to Norwich hosting Aston Villa and Man United heading up to Newcastle, if only to see if both teams can remember what sport they play. On top of all this gold there’s a peek into our live documents, the return of the Brucey-belly-rub and a half understood assessment of the Robin Williams movie Bicentennial Man. It's time for a brand new episode of Jules & Andy, hot off the press after Monday Night Football! We delve into that slightly underwhelming affair between Man United and Arsenal, before discussing the sides' capacity for any sort of success this season. We then head north to Tyneside to try and understand what's been going wrong at Newcastle. With Rafa Benitez out and Steve Bruce cautiously drinking from the poisoned chalice, we ask what can be done to restore some hope to a proud footballing city. Sheffield United came so close to earning a point against Liverpool only for young Dean Henderson to make a costly mistake. Chris Wilder’s response was less arm-around-the-shoulder and more foot-square-in-the-nuts. IT’S THE ONLY WAY HE’LL LEARN. A man’s punched a horse again and there’s really nowhere else to start. This time it was a Portsmouth fan. We don’t know why supporters of our teams keep doing this and we assure you we’re not involved. Away from that there was an actual Carabao Cup game as Southampton won THE South Coast derby, while Spurs went out to Lolchester on penalties and Old Man Milner helped Liverpool past MK Dons. We also hear of a potential fix for VAR’s offside problem, another ding dong between Mo Salah and the Egyptian FA, and a potential pay day for Mino. We're on tour! Andy’s flown back in from Milan this morning, just in time for a brand new episode of On The Continent! We begin with a look at two sides struggling at opposite ends of Ligue 1, as PSG lost their second of the season against perennially-underrated Reims and Monaco won their first league game in seven attempts. We then discuss the remarkable underdog story in Liga Nos, as Famalicão are top of the table after six matches— where can they realistically expect to finish this season? On today’s episode of Jules & Andy we begin with a look at Crystal Palace and their place among the pack of varying mediocrity in the Premier League. Does this represent a wider problem? What can owners, players and fans of these clubs realistically strive for in these modern times of financial and commercial inequality? We then take stock of Leicester hugely impressive start to the season and assess where Brendan Rodgers’ side may be able to reach. There’s also time for an inevitable (but entirely necessary) chat about VAR, where both Jules and Andy have some ideas as to how the implementation of this technology can be improved! New manager bounce, you say? Oh no, Watford, there will be none of that. Man City got back to their ruthless best this weekend, while Liverpool saw off the plucky underdogs of Chelsea and Spurs lost at Leicester because Son Heung-min sloppily strayed a few atoms offside. And so to the South Coast for one of the biggest games of the season (apparently) as Southampton host Bournemouth, while Chelsea host Liverpool, desperately hoping they won’t win a penalty as they simply have no way of knowing what will happen if they do. The true main event is of course Sean Dyche vs Daniel Farke. Will it be Burnley or Norwich who take home the points? Who cares? This one is all about the eclectic sounds of the post match interviews. Alongside all this there’s a cheese-based blast from the past, an injustice for Jeff Hendrick and further ear worms. Brie you later. Our live tour starts very soon! In Daniel Farke’s voice: “A pleasing weekend of football in which many of the topics were covered, such as Norwich City’s win over Manchester City which was perhaps not expected, Liverpool asserting their sporting superiority over the struggling Newcastle United and Arsenal showing much quality in the first half of their game with Watford and then perhaps letting themselves down in the second. There is also much discussion of the parting of the Red Sea, which is slightly off of the topics, there is some controversy regarding the designated email section of the podcast and some perhaps unnecessary discussion of dog boobs.” Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: [email protected] ***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. It’s the first international break of the season and we have a look at the most important contest of the week, which is of course Michael Owen vs Alan Shearer. Where the hell did that come from? Let’s see how this fascinating story develops. As well as minor things such as the Euro 2020 qualifiers we learn how to keep tabs on various Peters, flying footwear and the spotting of a Ramble favourite in the wild… Meanwhile, Luke inexplicably forgets about the very existence of Alan Hutton. What’s going wrong at Manchester United? That’s our first question on today’s episode of Jules & Andy, as we cast a reflective eye over Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s time in charge. Despite some promising young signings in the summer, they still seem to be lacking in key areas further up the pitch. Can they turn it around? Or is Solskjær’s time running out? Later on, Andy makes a case for the defence in the recent public trial of Arsenal signing David Luiz. Then, we discuss whether Everton’s impressive roster of individuals can become a cohesive and consistent unit, and step up to the mantle when challenging for the Top 6. An exhilarating North London Derby at the Emirates headlined a great weekend of football and we take a fond look back over starring roles from Granit Xhaka and Harry Kane, the pros and cons of Chelsea’s wobbly start to the season and Everton and Wolves playing out a humdinger of a ding dong. For our latest episode of Greatest Games, we’re joined by football writer and broadcaster Tom Williams as we take a deeper look at the 2006 World Cup quarter-final between Brazil and France. This match, despite being awash with some of the greatest players in history, was completely dominated by the balletic and utterly irresistible Zinedine Zidane. After two poor seasons with Real Madrid, many—Zidane included—felt his star was on the wane. So pervasive was this sentiment, that he announced his retirement ahead of this tournament. What followed however, against Spain in the Round of 16 and against Brazil, was a final glimpse of Zidane at his best in all his former glory. This Joga Bonito-inspired Brazil side, featuring some of the nation’s greatest attacking talent ever, could do nothing in response. Zidane left his mark on this game in broad, beautiful strokes and cemented himself as one of the greatest midfielders football has ever seen. There can be nowhere to start other than with the terrible news that Bury have been expelled from the EFL. Our commiserations to any Bury fans. Let’s hope that this never happens again. We start today’s episode of Jules & Andy with a look at some of the abhorrent racist abuse on social media that has been gaining publicity over the weekend. We discuss the possible ways to combat and reduce such abuse, and Jules discusses her own experience as a woman working in the game. Elsewhere, we take a look at an impressive year for Wolves, as they stand on the brink of qualification for the Europa League group stage. With some of the league’s brightest talents playing at Molineux we try to gauge what success might look like for Wolves, as well as the joys of adventure that their fans are tantalisingly close to. James Horncastle’s back in one of our continental hot seats and he’s packed some Serie A chat in his hand luggage! We start by talking about Juventus, as Sarri begins his reign in Turin. With the transfer window closing soon, their squad still looks a bit bloated— James discusses how they might be able to offload some of their fringe players as Sarri looks to streamline the team. We also discuss Franck Ribéry’s lovely move to Fiorentina and how they might get on under new coach Vincenzo Montella. We then head to France as Andy’s faves Lyon have got off to a great start (against admittedly poor opposition). We’re back to take a deep dive into the biggest stories from another hectic weekend of football. We begin with a thorough look at Frank Lampard’s Chelsea after a promising but inconsistent draw with Leicester— will we see a return to the unease that plagued much of last season? Then we take a look at some of the players who have come up from the Championship as they look to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. Teemu Pukki has taken the bull by the horns after his hat-trick against Newcastle, while Southampton’s new star Che Adams hasn’t enjoyed as successful a start. We also look at Sol Campbell’s recent exit from Macclesfield after he excelled last season despite the constraints of ‘the worst job in the football league.’ Tell us your thoughts! Time for a new episode of The Ramble, fresh out of the oven! We begin with the inevitable chat about VAR in City’s game against Spurs, but also take the time to acknowledge Kevin De Bruyne and Érik Lamela looking back to their imperious best as well as Pep's wild gesticulating. Elsewhere, we try and unravel that dismal Newcastle performance at Norwich as Teemu Pukki grabbed a glorious hat-trick. And Marcus tells us about his trip to the Emirates with Camerman Sam to watch Dani Ceballos and David Luiz have a lovely old time. Oh, and with no apology, we get a glimpse into the mind of a horny Alan Pardew. It's just the service we aim to provide. For the latest episode of Greatest Games, in association with the Blizzard, we’re off to the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille with Norwegian writer Lars Sivertsen. He talks us through the 1998 World Cup group game between Norway and reigning world champions Brazil, where two late goals from his unfancied home nation beat an XI featuring Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Dunga and Roberto Carlos. Lars discusses a risk-averse but hugely talented Norwegian side who, after disappointing results against Scotland and Morocco, had to win to secure their qualification from the group. After an 83rd minute equaliser from imposing striker Tore André Flo, Kjetil Rekdal struck the game-winning penalty in the final minutes— “with the lowest heart rate of any Norwegian.” For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!
