MLS weekend wrap: Revel in the joy and agony of absurd long-range goals

In the era of VAR where most goals get picked apart, strikes from distance offered a much-needed immediate emotional hit In an era where the sport’s biggest moments are scrutinized in slow-motion to find an inch of infraction, the long-range goal has become a necessary thrill. VAR only comes into play if a loitering teammate is caught between the shooter and goalkeeper. They also hatch a comfortingly familiar point of debate: was there anything that could’ve been done to save it? We can safely count Zavier Gozo’s wonder goal this weekend among the unsaveable. The Real Salt Lake homegrown has been one of the best players in Major League Soccer’s early weeks, a 19-year-old danger down the right flank who can slot in as a winger or wing back with similar impact. He’s quickly become one of the most proven progressive dribblers in the entire US player pool, and has shot up the scouting priority queues of several major European clubs.

Emma Hayes Olympic expectations, U23 U.S. Men’s fall to France, Canada Soccer Spygate

Alexi Lalas and David Mosse react to a hectic first day of Olympic soccer. The U23 U.S. Men’s team fell to France in their opening match. After a goalless first half, the French dominated with 3 unanswered goals in the second. Morocco also secured 3 points over Argentina behind a dramatic ending with a stoppage time goal, VAR, fans unrest, and over an hour long game suspension. On the women’s side, more pre-tournament drama broke out as Canada Soccer goes under investigation and Emma Hayes tries to lower Olympic expectations while explaining that the playing field has become more even. (6:30) The guys also discuss Real Salt Lake’s Diego Luna who was left off the U.S. Men’s Olympic Roster. Soon after, Luna announced that he will keep his options open to represent Mexico at the international level. Javier Aguierra has also been named as the new head coach for El Tri, and it is reported that we will likely see names such as Hirving Lozano and Memo Ochoa back on the roster under his tenure. (29:45) In #AskAlexi, Mosse and Alexi answer questions on the mindset of overage men's Olympic players, the state of USMNT heading into 2026 World Cup, and whether Alexi would consider the USMNT head coach position if offered.
