Is 'underestimated' Raya the best goalkeeper in the world?

Kai Havertz declared David Raya the best goalkeeper in the world after his saves helped Arsenal secure a 1-0 win over Sporting in their Champions League quarter-final first leg in Lisbon.

Restored David Raya makes the difference to help Arsenal shake off their angst | Jacob Steinberg

Mikel Arteta discovered that playing your best goalkeeper can be a good idea as his side recovered from cup exits with late win in Lisbon There was a temptation to fixate on the moment when Arsenal won this game with a goal that could change their season. Mikel Arteta had urged his players not to panic, not to sink away with hopes of a quadruple long gone, and Kai Havertz got the memo. Gabriel Martinelli crossed from the left and, as the ball dropped, Havertz caught the Sporting defence napping at last, controlled with a feathery touch, took a breath and rolled a finish past Rui Silva to give Arsenal victory in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. It had been a slog at Estádio José Alvalade. Arsenal attempted 488 passes and it was not until the first of two added minutes that they made one really count. Before then it was a grind. Arsenal were often constipated in open play. Although they controlled the game, at least until allowing it to become ragged during a fraught finale, there were long spells when the best the Premier League leaders offered was set-piece wrestling. Noni Madueke, mostly ineffective as he deputised for Bukayo Saka on the right wing, curled an early corner against the bar. Viktor Gyökeres was recorded as being on the pitch. Leandro Trossard tried to score from 40 yards. Leandro Trossard did not score from 40 yards.

Arteta admits Arsenal had point to prove after ‘big moment in season’ with win at Sporting

Havertz goal offers response after back-to-back defeats Arteta praises ‘extraordinary’ Raya for crucial saves Mikel Arteta acknowledged that Arsenal had a point to prove against Sporting after losing their last two matches and believes that Kai Havertz’s late winner could prove to be a “big moment” in their season. Arsenal had David Raya to thank for making three superb saves that kept the scores level before Havertz came off the bench to seal a priceless away victory. It was a huge relief for Arteta, who had urged his players to rediscover their identity after they suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup.

Sporting 0 Arsenal 1: Kai Havertz steals last gasp victory for Gunners following David Raya heroics

KAI HAVERTZ delivered a late winner and after a rough couple of weeks, Arsenal are on their way to the Champions League semi-finals. But after getting his players balancing pens between their fingers while dribbling with the ball before the trip to Portugal, maybe Mikel Arteta needs to get his team to stick with good...

Arteta looks for Arsenal identity ahead of Sporting clash

Good morning from Lisbon. Arsenal and Mikel Arteta arrived yesterday evening, and the team news is mixed. Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel have all travelled, but Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber have stayed behind in London, not quite ready for this one. With a huge game on Saturday against Bournemouth, you have to imagine […] The post Arteta looks for Arsenal identity ahead of Sporting clash appeared first on Arseblog ... an Arsenal blog.

David Raya breaks silence on controversial Mikel Arteta Carabao Cup final decision

David Raya admitted there was little he could do but accept Mikel Arteta's controversial decision to leave his first choice goalkeeper out of his starting line-up for the Carabao Cup final defeat against Manchester City.

‘Use that fuel’: Mikel Arteta and David Raya urge Arsenal to feed off cup losses

Team will not panic in wake of City and Southampton defeats Raya set to return in goal for Tuesday’s first leg at Sporting Mikel Arteta has insisted that Arsenal will not panic after losing successive games for the first time this season but admitted that they must rediscover their identity to get their campaign back on track. The Premier League leaders face Sporting in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon on Tuesday after seeing their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple crumble with defeats by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and the Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup. Bukayo Saka and Jurriën Timber have been ruled out as they continue to struggle with injuries, although there was better news for Arteta with Gabriel Magalhães, Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard all expected to feature against the Portuguese champions.

Arsenal Under Pressure? | Villa’s 11-Game Streak | Has Wirtz Arrived?

Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Mark Ogden, John Cross and Jason Burt to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We start with Arsenal’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brighton, sealed by a stunning David Raya save, that kept them top of the league. But are Arsenal beginning to feel the pressure? The focus then shifts to The Ashes, where England finally claimed a Test win in Australia—but John believes it was a hollow victory played out on a dreadful pitch. Next up is Aston Villa’s superb run of eleven consecutive wins. A 2–1 victory at Stamford Bridge has moved them to within three points of league leaders Arsenal—but with Unai Emery’s side consistently outperforming their xG, can they keep this run going? Finally, we turn to Liverpool’s 2–1 victory over bottom-of-the-table Wolves. With his first league goal of the season, we ask: has the real Florian Wirtz arrived in the Premier League? Brentford with Tom Medd | Correspondent Week ep. 6 | Planet FPL 2023/24

Tom Medd joins James to talk all things Brentford and with an attractive set of opening fixtures there’s plenty to be excited about and attacking assets particularly appeal, but who can step up and reward FPL managers in the Absence of the suspended Ivan Toney? Intriguingly, the players of interest offensively are all at different price points, with Bryan Mbuemo at 6.5, Yoane Wissa at 6.0, Kevin Schade at 5.5 and as discovered on the Podcast Keane Lewis-Potter shouldn’t be discounted at 5.0 either. But interest remains in investing in another forward; so how much should that play on the minds of FPL managers? Will new signing Mark Flekken start in goal, with with David Raya likely to depart? But importantly, is he actually any good? Pre-season performances have caused concern, so would it be better to invest in a defender? And the Podcast begins with discussion on Toney’s suspension. On the first of two Clash of the Correspondents this week focusing on the 4 teams who Double in GW27, James is joined by Southampton fan Matt Samuel and Brentford fan Tom Medd to discuss all the latest at their clubs and the FPL assets for the Double. There's discussion on if Ivan Toney is likely to be the most captained player in the week ahead with the trip to Southampton proceeded by a visit to Everton. But the in demand forward is at risk of a ban, be it via yellow cards or the alleged gambling breaches that he is accused of. Who's the best Brentford defensive asset to invest in? Is David Raya an obvious buy for those who have a Brentford spot open in their squad and invested in Robert Sanchez? Are Southampton assets being overlooked? Or is it still James Ward-Prowse or no one? Plus, reflection on Nathan Jones time in charge of Saints and why Director of Football Rasmus Ankersen remains under pressure and he was previously very much a part of the success story at Brentford. Suj & James wrap up Correspondent Week Tuesday by discussing Brentford with @FPLDummyTom and there should be plenty of interest for FPL managers with some well priced assets and a very interesting opening set of fixtures. There's a detailed debate on the goalkeeper situation followed by concern about injuries at centre-back, a position which has been bolstered by the addition of Ben Mee. Is record signing Keane Lewis-Potter likely to start or will fellow 5.5 FPL midfielder Yoanne Wissa keep his place?
