Jules & Andy: What next for Olivier Giroud, Newcastle's takeover rumours return, and office football chat

With February here, we’re taking a look at some of the fallout from a fairly lively January transfer window on today's episode of Jules & Andy! We begin with marooned striker Olivier Giroud who, after touted moves both within the Premier League and overseas never flourished, he remains stuck in the stands at Chelsea. We discuss where it's gone wrong for the Frenchman and how he may be able to squeeze himself into Frank Lampard's squad. We then take a look at the suspiciously timely rumours of a takeover at Newcastle United and run the rule over their own new loan signings. There's all of that, plus a load of correspondence – including a dramatic turn in the "Shrews" vs "Shrows"-bury debate. 2020.01.29 - Le Magie de la Coupe

We're back! After an extended winter break, Kris, Phil, Rich and Jez are joined by Coupe correspondent John Mainland to look back at the post-Christmas action, including many cupsets in the Coupe de France, one of which happens as we are recording. Along with the Ligue 1 positions and Coupe de la Ligue, we will be starting our series 'French Football Future' in the coming weeks, so if there are any players you are anxious to hear about, let us know in the comments or on Twitter.

On The Continent: Lyon's amazing academy, Jurgen Klinsmann's misplaced badges, and Taça de Liga scenes

We’re back with some more continental conversation as Luke Moore, Andy Brassell and Lars Sivertsen bring you another episode of On The Continent on Football Ramble Daily! After a fantastic Coupe de France performance we begin with a discussion on Lyon’s latest academy product, 16 year-old Rayan Cherki. We discuss his impressive technical qualities and also look at the wider history of exciting graduates from their academy’s illustrious history. After that, we check in with a struggling Hertha Berlin and their coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who recently couldn’t produce his coaching badges to Bundesliga officials after leaving them in a cupboard back in the USA - an apt metaphor for their season… Elsewhere we discuss some typically insane scenes in Portugal’s Taça de Liga, delve into the backstory of Braga manager Rúben Amorim and preview the Rome derby in our Games of the Week! On The Continent: Milan blandness, Coupe de France madness, and Dries Mertens' sadness

We’re back in the studio with some more continental content, as Luke Moore and Andy Brassell are joined by The Guardian’s Nicky Bandini! We begin, as the man himself would expect, with Zlatan Ibrahimović’s largely uneventful debut for Milan. Nicky discusses how his leadership off the pitch might be more valuable than his contribution on it, as well as assessing Stefano Pioli’s struggles in the dugout. We also mention some struggles down south, as Gennaro Gattuso hasn’t had the best start at Napoli and club legend Dries Mertens now find himself resigned to the subs bench. Elsewhere, Andy runs us through Porto’s impressive win over Sporting and their impressive boss Sérgio Conceição. There’s also some chat on perhaps Europe’s best cup competition, the Coupe de France, and a preview of some cracking Games of the Week. Table-toppers Inter against free-scoring Atalanta, anyone? On The Continent: Håland completes his big move, Leonardo Jardim has been sacked again, and Milan send out the Zlat-Signal

We’ve got a debutant joining us on the first On The Continent of the new decade, as Andy and Lars are joined by German-based writer Ryan Hunn! We begin with the biggest continental news as Erling Braut Håland completes his move to Borussia Dortmund. We discuss how the transfer came about and how he’ll fit into Dortmund’s front line as their first out-and-out striker in a fair while. On the other side of their transfer ledger, we also take stock of Julian Weigl’s recently-completed his move to Benfica. Elsewhere there are some truly glorious transfers for us to celebrate, including Messrs Ben Arfa, Ibrahimovic and Cavani all making moves. And Andy gives us an update from the South of France as Leonardo Jardim has been sacked by Monaco for a second time in fourteen months. Correspondence? Fire away: [email protected] or find us on social media by searching 'Football Ramble Daily'. The Blizzard: France 2-1 Italy, 2000

n today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by Michael Cox - writer for The Athletic and author of both The Mixer and Zonal Marking. We’re taking a look back at the Euro 2000 final between world champions France and an unfancied Italy side. So unfancied, in fact, that Italian newspaper headlines read “Stay at home, Italy” on the eve of the tournament. But, after beating the Netherlands on penalties in the semi-finals, the Italians went up against a hugely talented France side featuring Zinedine Zidane at the peak of his powers. We discuss the buildup to the game, how football tactics were changing around the turn of the millennium and some unflustered coolness from Robert Pires. Fancy getting in touch? The Blizzard: Brazil 0-1 France, 2006

For our latest episode of Greatest Games, we’re joined by football writer and broadcaster Tom Williams as we take a deeper look at the 2006 World Cup quarter-final between Brazil and France. This match, despite being awash with some of the greatest players in history, was completely dominated by the balletic and utterly irresistible Zinedine Zidane. After two poor seasons with Real Madrid, many—Zidane included—felt his star was on the wane. So pervasive was this sentiment, that he announced his retirement ahead of this tournament. What followed however, against Spain in the Round of 16 and against Brazil, was a final glimpse of Zidane at his best in all his former glory. This Joga Bonito-inspired Brazil side, featuring some of the nation’s greatest attacking talent ever, could do nothing in response. Zidane left his mark on this game in broad, beautiful strokes and cemented himself as one of the greatest midfielders football has ever seen. On The Continent: Maurizio Sarri's transfer troubles, Lyon start strong, and Franck flies to Florence

James Horncastle’s back in one of our continental hot seats and he’s packed some Serie A chat in his hand luggage! We start by talking about Juventus, as Sarri begins his reign in Turin. With the transfer window closing soon, their squad still looks a bit bloated— James discusses how they might be able to offload some of their fringe players as Sarri looks to streamline the team. We also discuss Franck Ribéry’s lovely move to Fiorentina and how they might get on under new coach Vincenzo Montella. We then head to France as Andy’s faves Lyon have got off to a great start (against admittedly poor opposition). Plus, there’s talk on Zinedine Zidane’s difficult task at the helm of Real Madrid and Thierry Henry sticking his cultured boot in. 2019.05.21 - Good in the Air

Most things got sorted out in the last round, as Lille hammered Angers, and OL and ASSE both won, to sew up third and fourth spots and the European places for next season. However, there's still some stuff to sort out at the other end, so Kris, Phil, Jez and Rich are here to round that up, the recent UNFP awards, and the recent France squad announcement from Didier Deschamps.

2019.05.01 - Rennes win the Cup!

On Saturday, Rennes won the Coupe de France for the third time, their first since 1971, beating PSG on penalties after a 2-2 draw that saw them come from 2-0 down. Rich is purring as he, Kris and Phil look back at a highly enjoyable cup final, the implications for Europe, the rest of the Ligue 1 action, and PSG's continuing wibbles. Elsewhere, OL are through to the Women's Champions' League final after beating Chelsea 3-2 on aggregate, where they will face Barcelona who beat Bayern in their semi.

2019.04.23 - A sudden unexpected blip in form

PSG secure the title! Because Lille had a goalless draw at Toulouse, which meant they did that before even kicking off against Monaco. So the Kylian Mbappe hat-trick at the Parc de Princes on Sunday seemed a little underwhelming. Kris, Phil and Jez try to put all this into perspective, look at the race for Europe, the relegation battle, Lyon in the WCL, and other things.

2019.04.17 - Bumps in the road for PSG

Phil, Jez and Conor have a look at PSG's increasingly desperate attempts to sew up the Ligue 1 title that has looked nailed on since August, as the Parisians draw with bogey team Strasbourg, get hammered by Lille, and lose away at Nantes. We also cover Prince Gouano's response to racist chanting away at Dijon. the race for third, the amble for fifth, and various other issues.

2019.03.19 - European disappointment and a classic Classique

France are out of Europe, after PSG's capitulation against Manchester United is followed by Barcelona beating Lyon 5-1 and Arsenal overturning Rennes' first-leg lead with a 3-0 home win. The gang's all here to discuss that, and the Classique which saw PSG beating OM 3-1 in a game that saw Steve Mandanda sent off, banjaxing OM's chances. Kris, Jez, Phil and Rich cover all that, the relegation fight, various fan protests, the latest on Adrien Rabiot, and the France squad for the upcoming Euro qualifiers against Moldova and Iceland, as well as any other business.

2019.03.03 - the FFW Derby

European competition is back and while PSG take a 2-0 lead back to the Parc de Princes against an injury-hit Manchester United, the Europa League sees Rennes play Arsenal - this pits Kris against Rich, with Jez and Phil chipping in on the other stuff.
