Distancing from a potential move to Cristiano Ronaldo's SPL, Bruno Fernandes has made his intentions clear on 'competing' at Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes was one of the most intriguing names of last summer’s transfer window, with the midfielder coming genuinely close to making a move to the Saudi Pro League. Now, the prospect of another high-profile Portuguese arrival alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the Middle East appears increasingly remote, as Fernandes has made clear his focus is firmly on “competing” at Manchester United. Al Hilal mounted a serious push to sign Fernandes in the summer of 2025, reportedly tabling a fee in excess of 100 million euros and dangling a salary in the region of £700,000 per week. The midfielder even held conversations with Cristiano Ronaldo about life in Saudi Arabia and the league itself, but ultimately relented under pressure from then-head coach Rúben Amorim and chose to remain part of United’s project despite the club’s persistent struggles. In an interview with The Times, Fernandes was asked whether the two cup trophies claimed since his arrival were enough for a club of United’s stature. “Everyone who comes to Man United wants to win every trophy. No one thinks in coming to the club, ‘We’re going to fight for just one or two trophies in six years,’ let’s say. You want to fight for all of them. We went to three other finals and didn’t win. That can happen. But at least you’ve been in the fight. We were close,” he said. With his contract set to expire at the end of the 2026-27 season, the question of his future will inevitably come back into focus, but Fernandes has laid out a clear set of conditions for staying. “And what I said to the club every time I spoke with them, what I want from the time I’m here, I just want to compete. Because if I compete, I will be close to winning. If I don’t compete, there’s no chance I’m going to get close to any silverware,” he added. Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United celebrating. Fernandes also addressed the financial allure of other leagues while making it clear that trophies, not money, are what drives his decision-making. “Money, you can get anywhere. A lot of clubs in the Premier League pay well, a lot of clubs in Italy, Spain, pay you a lot. You come to this club because of the history, because of what you think you can achieve,” he stated. “(Whether) you end up achieving or not, that’s a question of you being better than the other teams. But what I always say to the club is you can’t promise me I’m going to win the Premier League, that’s impossible, but if you promise we’re going to be competitive — that’s all I need to know,” Fernandes concluded, in remarks that point more toward a continuation at Old Trafford rather than a move to the SPL. Will Manchester United compete in the 2026-27 season? Last season was one to forget for Manchester United, who suffered defeat in the Europa League final and finished 15th in the Premier League, the lowest top-flight finish in the club’s history. The campaign was further destabilized by the sudden departure of Ruben Amorim midway through, but the team has since shown signs of steadying the ship and pushing toward the upper reaches of the table. United currently sit third in the Premier League with 55 points from 31 games, putting them on track to return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2023-24 season. Set to turn 32 in September 2026, Fernandes will be entering the final year of his contract, with everything to play for both individually and collectively as he waits to see whether United can truly deliver on the promise of competing for the biggest prizes.

After Arsenal’s setback against Bournemouth, there are questions about their mentality, what mindset do they need to carry them over the line in the Premier League title race? While the star remains focused on his objective of reaching full fitness with Santos, Neymar's father and agent is reportedly set to hold talks with FC Cincinnati representatives to complete his move to the MLS. Neymar has been linked with a blockbuster move to Major League Soccer, with FC Cincinnati emerging as the frontrunner to land his signature. While the Brazilian star continues working his way back to full fitness at Santos, his agent is reportedly set to hold talks with Cincinnati over a potential deal. According to ESPN Brasil, Neymar’s father, who also serves as his agent and the primary manager of his business affairs, is awaiting a face-to-face meeting with FC Cincinnati to move the conversation forward. With the MLS club’s interest in the former Barcelona star confirmed as genuine, the meeting would represent a significant step in the early stages of negotiations. The outlet reports that Neymar’s entourage intends to hold the meeting with Cincinnati’s representatives in person. While financial terms have not yet been disclosed, the primary objective of the gathering is to assess the viability of a deal, covering salary expectations and bonus structures. The meeting is expected to take place in the coming days, with Cincinnati’s delegation aiming to make their case for Neymar to join the league after the World Cup, regardless of whether he ultimately features in the tournament. Club president and owner Jeff Berding and sporting director Chris Albright are among those set to make the trip, accompanied by a team of image rights specialists to help advance the discussions. Neymar Junior of Santos competes for the ball with Ruan of Atletico Mineiro. Neymar focused on returning to fitness While speculation over his future continues to swirl, Neymar’s attention for now remains firmly on getting back to peak condition and earning a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup. Despite the noise surrounding his next move, the forward took the field for Santos last Saturday in a 1-0 win over Atletico Mineiro. In an encouraging sign on the fitness front, Santos head coach Cuca expressed confidence that Neymar will be available for every upcoming fixture. “Neymar filled his tank, and Gabigol did too. They performed well in the match. It might have been their best game in terms of competitive and physical levels,” Cuca said after Saturday’s win. “The trend is for him to keep playing; he doesn’t need to play the full 90 minutes. We’ll manage his workload so they are ready to go every three days,” the coach added. Santos face Recoleta on Tuesday in the Copa Sudamericana, followed by Fluminense next Sunday and Coritiba on the 22nd in the Copa do Brasil. The optimism comes at a critical time, as questions have lingered over whether Neymar would be able to withstand the physical demands of a World Cup, where teams can be required to play every three to four days. Notably, Neymar has not played four matches within a three-day window since July of last year, making the upcoming fixture run a significant test for a player who was once considered among the very best in the world.

For Jack Wilshere, six months and 38 games into his managerial career, at the club he played for until joining Arsenal at seven, it was a first trophy of a second footballing life, Nahki Wells’ double securing victory. Rotherham United 1-3 Barnsley League One - Saturday 11th April Barnsley claimed a vital 3–1 victory over Rotherham United in a fiercely contested South Yorkshire derby, easing lingering relegation concerns and climbing to 12th in EFL League One. It was a performance built on resilience, clinical finishing, and a decisive second-half spell that ultimately separated the sides. While the late consolation for the hosts denied a clean sheet, the result itself felt far more significant than the final moments might suggest. Early pressure and resilience from the Reds The opening stages were scrappy but intense, typical of a derby encounter with both sides showing urgency without real composure in the final third. Barnsley fashioned the first major opening from a set-piece, while Rotherham responded with chances of their own but failed to capitalise from close range. The visitors had to withstand a spell of pressure midway through the half. Owen Goodman was called into action, and Eoghan O’Connell produced a crucial intervention on the line to keep the scores level. It was a reminder that, despite league position, this would not come easily. Phillips provides the breakthrough Against the run of play, Barnsley struck first—and the move encapsulated both opportunism and quality. A turnover high up the pitch created a numerical advantage, and the ball eventually fell to Adam Phillips, who showed composure and precision to drive a low effort into the corner from the edge of the box. It was a clinical finish in a half short on quality in front of goal, and it gave Barnsley a foothold they would not relinquish. Bradshaw takes centre stage The second half began with moments of uncertainty, but Barnsley gradually asserted control, showing greater purpose and cohesion in possession. After earlier opportunities went begging, the decisive second goal finally arrived midway through the half. Tom Bradshaw rose to meet a well-delivered cross and guided his header into the bottom corner—ending a lengthy goal drought and shifting momentum firmly in Barnsley’s favour. From there, the visitors grew in confidence, and their attacking play became sharper and more direct. Bradshaw soon doubled his tally, capitalising on a defensive error to race through on goal and finish emphatically. At 3–0, the contest was effectively over, and Barnsley’s superiority in key moments had been underlined. Late drama but job already done Rotherham pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time from the penalty spot, ensuring Barnsley’s unwanted run without a clean sheet continued. However, it did little to change the overall narrative. The visitors had already done the hard work, combining defensive resolve with clinical attacking play when it mattered most. What it means This result represents a significant step forward for Barnsley. Moving up to 12th place, they now sit comfortably clear of the relegation zone and can begin to look upward rather than over their shoulder. After a difficult run of form, this was exactly the type of performance required—disciplined when under pressure, and decisive when opportunities arose. If they can build on this level of efficiency and control, there is every chance they can finish the season strongly. Team Line-ups: Rotherham United (4 - 2 - 3 - 1): T. Cann, R. James, Z. Jules, L. While the performance was not flawless, it was effective—and at this stage of the season, that is what matters most. A brace from Bradshaw will take the headlines, but the broader takeaway is one of growing stability and belief. For the first time in a while, Barnsley look like a side with direction—and, crucially, breathing space.

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City can't waste time thinking about Arsenal's results, because they still need to win every one of their games to control the title race.

Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Miguel Delaney, Charlotte Duncker and Dan Kilpatrick to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We kick things off at the Emirates, where Arsenal’s 2–1 defeat to Bournemouth breathes new life into the title race. Is Miguel right to question Arteta’s fine-margin tactics as the finish line draws near? Staying with the title race, are City starting to smell blood—and could a domestic treble be on the cards? Dan isn’t expecting a huge points tally from this season’s winners, but worries Arsenal are fading when it matters most. Next, we head to The Masters, where Rory McIlroy is joint leader heading into the final day, despite a difficult Saturday. Riath Al-Samarrai joins us from Augusta, calling ‘moving day’ extraordinary and Cameron Young sensational—but could this be more than a two-horse race? And finally, we dive into Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival at Spurs—does starting his reign in the relegation zone only increase the pressure? Dan says he’ll return to the show in full Arsenal kit if De Zerbi lasts his contract. - •You can watch the sporting action live on Sky Sports. Rethinking Pass Repetition In many superficial analyses of contemporary football, the repetition of the pass is often interpreted as a sign of sterile possession or slow circulation without attacking intention. However, from a systemic perspective of the game, that reading is deeply incomplete. The reiteration of the pass does not constitute a symptom of a […] The post Rethinking Pass Repetition: From Paco Seirul·lo’s Theory To Gabriel Milito’s Chivas De Guadalajara – Tactical Theory appeared first on Total Football Analysis.
