Reaction to Portugal: Pochettino Gets It All Wrong, USMNT Tactics Under Fire

Matt Doyle and Tab Ramos react to another disappointing USMNT performance against Portugal, questioning the tactical approach from Mauricio Pochettino, including the decision to deploy Christian Pulisic as a lone forward in a false 9 role. Looking ahead, Tab reveals his projected Starting XI for the FIFA World Cup and dives into the toughest roster decisions facing the USMNT. USMNT blanked in World Cup tune-up | USA vs. Portugal recap & reaction (Soccer 3/31)

After a 2-0 defeat to Portugal, more questions than answers surround Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT. Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Tony Meola break down a frustrating night and a March camp defined by constant tinkering, with tactics, personnel, and, most notably, a back four that still isn’t convincing this close to the World Cup. There were bright spots - Auston Trusty made the most of his opportunity - but who else helped or hurt their case with the roster deadline looming? The guys debate the biggest selection dilemmas and build their ideal XI for the opener against Paraguay. Despite back-to-back losses, Pochettino and Christian Pulisic are striking a positive tone… but is that optimism justified, or a warning sign? Plus, Türkiye punch their ticket to Group D - are they the immediate favorites to top it? And what did Pochettino really mean by saying his squad doesn’t feature “top 100” players? Pochettino's World Cup mandate for USMNT is clear: Intensity is not optional

The U.S. manager bemoaned his side's 90-minute effort against Belgium. Will the players' response meet the challenge?

Can USMNT close March on a positive? | USA vs. Portugal preview & predictions (Soccer 3/30)

The vibes are… complicated. After a sobering 5-2 loss to Belgium, Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Tony Meola regroup to unpack what went wrong, starting with a sharper reassessment of Johnny Cardoso’s first half and what it means for his role moving forward. The guys also take a closer look at Matt Turner and dig into what Mauricio Pochettino may (and may not) have learned from a night where intensity was a major question. From there, the focus shifts to Christian Pulisic, who reaches the 10-year mark with the United States men's national soccer team. But it’s not just a celebration as the crew weighs his current goal drought with the national team. Then it’s on to the final dress rehearsal. The USMNT faces Portugal national football team, a side missing stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Leão, but still loaded with quality. The crew dives into Roberto Martínez’s setup and talks through what Pochettino’s projected XI could look like with roster decisions looming. One last test. Big calls ahead. Drink in the jeopardy of the World Cup playoffs, it’s the last we’ll get for a while | Jonathan Wilson

The expansion of this summer’s 48-team tournament mean Tuesday’s games will be the best we see until the round of 16 Sign up for Soccer with Jonathan Wilson here Live in a World Cup host city? Tell us your stories There is always a slightly odd rhythm to the World Cup. The final round of qualifying games is almost invariably more exciting than the early games at the tournament itself, and now with 32 teams making it through the group stage and into the knockout rounds, that is likely to be even more true for the 2026 edition. Those final qualifiers in November were thrilling and meaningful – Troy Parrott’s hat-trick! Scotland scoring two absurdly good goals in the same game! DR Congo beating Nigeria on penalties as bottles rained down from the stands! Honduras failing to score against Costa Rica! – and Tuesday will be too as 12 teams battle for the six remaining slots. But for those not involved in World Cup playoffs, there is an unsatisfying phoniness to the friendlies they must play instead, with experimental line-ups and weary players going through glorified training exercises. While it’s never good to be letting in five goals, neither the USA nor Ghana should be too concerned about the defeats to Belgium or Austria.
