Adam Hurrey is joined on the midweek Adjudication Panel by Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker. On the agenda: Carabao Cup curiosities, the exact status of Arsenal's quadruple hopes, a very subtle footballing prefix for a certain level of player, two listeners submit their 1,500-word mini-thesis on what constitutes a “finish”, the January Transfers That Just Feel So Right XI and a first-ever attempt at quiz format Happy Hunting Grounds: The Ladder. Meanwhile, the panel react to the bombshell news of Keys & Gray's departure from beIN Sports at the end of this season. A very enjoyable weekend of football in the Premier League that included comebacks, momentum shifts and late drama and some FPL haulers too in the likes of (substitute) Joao Pedro and the Liverpool pair of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. Pedro and other Chelsea assets will take on greater appeal should they overturn their Carabao Cup deficit at Arsenal. The team that progresses now has a confirmed Double Gameweek in 26 and that may influence forthcoming moves with both have attractive fixtures this weekend too. But Chelsea were given a big scare against West Ham, The Blues completed one of a number of comebacks this weekend, as did Liverpool against Newcastle and Tottenham showed fight to come back from two down against Manchester City, who slipped further behind Arsenal. Whilst Manchester United let their own two goal advantage slip, but still won, with Bruno Fernandes again returning well for those who captained him, and he's likely to be even more popular this forthcoming weekend. All the games covered as usual and all the key FPL points deliberated. Champions League top eight qualification and the gap to the Premier League leaders down to four points... You'd have to say that's a pretty good week for Manchester City, all told. David Mooney is joined by Joe Butterfield from The City Ramble and Adam Carter from StatCity.co.uk to discuss the wins over Wolves and Galatasaray. That being said, there's a couple of bogey teams up next in the league at a pair of grounds that are, frankly, cursed when City go to visit... So how will that picture look in a couple of weeks? Jack from Rule The Roost joins the show to tell us about Spurs this season so far, plus we'll look ahead to next week's Carabao Cup semifinal second leg with Newcastle. And as the squad continues to evolve, we discuss Oscar Bobb's departure and the options in the team for the final months of the season following some key players returning to fitness to join the two new signings.==========To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Carrick Perfect Debut as Man United Stunned City in the Derby Michael Carrick started his Manchester United managing career in the best possible fashion after winning the derby against Man City this weekend. The Red Devils shocked their rival and put Pep Guardiola’s side’s title challenge under serious threat. It's been a week of excellent cup victories for Manchester City. To celebrate, David Mooney is joined by Dom Farrell from Sporting News and City fan Chris Higginbottom. They discuss the 10-1 win over Exeter and then the 2-0 success in the first leg of the League Cup semifinal at Newcastle. It was the first time since 1987 that City scored double-figures in a game and, strangely, the scoreline matched the date (for only the 18th time in City's history)... but it was a remarkable bit of history-making from Pep Guardiola's side. At the same time, City were also on the receiving end of a VAR controversy, as the video assistant took five-and-a-half minutes to disallow what seems to be a perfectly reasonable goal at St James's Park. With trips to Manchester United and Bodø/Glimt to come, we hear from Jay Mottershead from The Stretford Paddock and Norwegian journalist covering Glimt, Stian Høgland to get some idea of what City can expect this week.Plus, as young players like Max Alleyne and Ryan McAidoo impress, we discuss what options Guardiola has for the upcoming games and how necessary it is for the club to move again in the transfer market this month, as Antoine Semenyo settles in very nicely.==========To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. It's that time of year, where January arrives, the FA Cup 3rd round has gone & the Carabao Cup Final can be projected. That means for FPL managers it's time to think seriously about what to do with chips. Suj and James discuss the calendar for the rest of the season, understanding permutations and fixture projections to give an overview of when might be best to save chips for. Wildcard now or save it? Could there be a Double Gameweek soon? There will also be a popular template strategy... but there needs to be an awareness that it could all change! On Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Wolves fan Bradley Parker and Newcastle fan Simon Bibby to discuss the latest at their clubs ahead of Sunday's meeting at Molineux. Both have hit a recent resurgence of form when it was really needed, with both unbeaten in four in all competitions, with Newcastle winning their last three in the Premier League and Wolvescfinally managed their first league win of the season against West Ham. Cause for optimism or do respective concerns persist for both? Matheus Mane, price as a 4.5 forward in FPL is now attracting serious attention and looks good for minutes moving forward. But is he the only Wolves asset that can be considered. Bruno Guimaraes is having an outstanding season, but is there a case to now ignore him and the likes of Malick Thiaw and Anthony Gordon as Newcastle approach a difficult and packed schedule starting with tonight's Carabao Cup Semi Final 1st leg against Manchester City? Given we allowed for three games as we switched back to our regular Thursday recording schedule for the Blue Moon Podcast, you'd have been forgiven for thinking Manchester City might have won at least one of their matches in that time... but sadly not. Three draws and a potential eight-point gap to Arsenal as they face Liverpool not long after this recording means it's not been the happiest of New Years... David Mooney is joined by City fan Adam Monk and the BBC's football correspondent John Murray to work out what's happened. At least attention can turn away from Premier League woes for now, though, as Exeter City come to the Etihad in the FA Cup and the it's a tricky trip to Newcastle in the League Cup semi-final first leg. Since it's the first time City have ever played Exeter, we hear from football historian Gary James about the other one-off ties City have had courtesy of the FA Cup.We also get some insight into what to expect from the Grecians on Saturday from Jon from The Big Bank Theory podcast. With City perhaps naming an inexperienced side because of injuries and fatigue in the squad, are there nerves of an upset or should a heavily-rotated City side still have enough to make it into the fourth round draw? With the potential arrivals of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi (perhaps), we also discuss what the squad needs to give it a bit more oomf in the coming weeks... Plus, what's the most heart-breaking last-minute equaliser?==========To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Should we just be celebrating Ousmane Dembélé for winning the Ballon d’Or, rather than moaning about who didn’t? Jimbo's got Natalie Gedra, Duncan Alexander and Charlie Eccleshare alongside him for a look back on all the midweek action (so far) - and look ahead to MD6 in the Premier League. Then it's all eyes on the Premier League weekend - with the battle of the unbeaten sides at Selhurst Park, Arsenal trying to break their recent St James' hoodoo, Villa hoping to end their worrying start to the season - and Chelsea desperate to recapture some of that Cole Palmer magic after his remarkable first half showing in this fixture last year. Alexander Isak scored his first goal for the club, and Hugo Ekitike delivered the winner as Liverpool beat Southampton 2-1 in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Former Reds David Thompson and Jay Spearing also contribute their analysis of the encounter at Anfield.
With Manchester City entering a positive swing of fixtures that begins with the visit of Burnley, Suj and James decided this would be a good time to revaluate strategy for chip usage in the first half of the season. The Podcast kicks off with discussion on if Crystal Palace's progress in the Carabao Cup could lead to blanks and doubles in December and there's an assessment of 'danger fixtures' where rotation could bite due to short turnarounds or difficult fixtures either side of 'easier' games. And there's discussion on options available for all of the Bench Boost, Free Hit, Triple Captain and Wildcard chips right up until the final opportunity of GW19. Jimbo, Charlie Eccleshare, Colin Millar and Duncan Alexander assemble to pore over Tuesday and Wednesday's pretty tasty Matchday 1 Champions League ties. Another late Liverpool goal? You don't say! We begin with Wednesday night at Anfield and the dramatic 3-2 win over Atletico, before turning attention to Chelsea's self-inflicted wounds in their 3-1 defeat by a superb Harry Kane-led Bayern Munich. There's reflections on the wins for Tottenham and Arsenal on Tuesday night - and the rest of the action including the sacking of Bruno Lage at Benfica which seems to be opening the door for the return of a rather famous manager... There was chaos in Turin, PSG purring, Trent limping off and headers aplenty elsewhere across the 12 matches we've seen so far - with no doubt more entertainment to come tonight. We've got Carabao Cup fun - including Swansea's remarkable comeback against Ange's Forest - before a look ahead to the Premier League weekend that awaits! Remember, we're back on Friday to reflect on Thursday night's Champions League action and preview the rest of the weekend's matches. Produced by Charlie Jones and Lucy Oliva. Mark Sutherns joins James to discuss a dramatic start to Nottingham Forest's season that has seen the popular Nuno Espirito Santo depart and be replaced by a man James knows very well, Ange Postecoglu. There's discussion on where it went wrong behind the scenes for Nuno, which led to what felt to many, like an inevitable departure, despite his brilliant achievement in bringing European football back to The City Ground. And what we can expect from Ange, with the man himself saying changes will now be implemented, starting with tonight's trip to Swansea City in the Carabao Cup? But many are sceptical following his spell at Tottenham Hotspur where despite delivering a trophy the team fell to a 17th place league finish. Have lessons been learned? Should Forest fans be excited? Or nervous? And which players are likely to fit what the new man wants, and does he have the personnel to achieve it? You can hear more from Mark discussing Forest on Forest Focus: https://www.youtube.com/@Forest-Focus Tomorrow on Planet FPL: Ask James, live stream at 12pm BST with an audio to follow shortly after conclusion Today on Patreon: Tot&Ham (IT+) & The Midweek FPL Dilemma (AT) The full Planet FPL schedule for this week can be found via this post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/138901501 Want to become a member of our FPL community and support the Podcast?
