Ruthless PSG prove that not even Anfield has an infinite capacity for miracles | Jonathan Wilson

Stage was set for one of Liverpool’s classic comeback nights – but not this team against these European champions Often in the past Liverpool has demanded and Anfield has delivered. Past glories perhaps shouldn’t influence the present, but they do; precedent begets belief. That’s part of the mythos of the great stadiums, how they develop a life and an identity of their own. But a club cannot simply give itself to an arena and hope that it will do the job that players and management and the executive body cannot. No ground, not even Anfield, has an infinite capacity for miracles. Just because Liverpool came from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona in 2019, there’s no reason to believe they could overhaul a two-goal deficit against Paris Saint-Germain in 2026. Anfield did its bit on a windy night on which early drizzle gave way to teeming rain. The rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone was suitably stirring, the noise from both sets of fans boisterous. But it was not enough.

Lamine Yamal Channels LeBron, Neymar As Barcelona Eyes Champions League Comeback

Lamine Yamal is looking to LeBron James for some inspiration as he tries to lead Barcelona to a Champions League comeback.

Where to watch Liverpool v Paris Saint-Germain plus kick-off time and team news for Champions League tie

Liverpool will hope for another memorable European night at Anfield when Paris Saint-Germain visit in the Champions League. Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia goals have the Parisians 2-0 up on …

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal issues a stern warning to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals: ‘This isn’t over’

Despite being defeated by Atlético Madrid, Barcelona remain hopeful of overturning the result. In fact, Lamine Yamal has sent a message of encouragement to the Culers, issuing a strong warning to the Colchoneros. Even though Barcelona arrived as clear favorites, Atlético Madrid managed to defeat them 2–0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. Hansi Flick’s team failed to convert the numerous chances they created, leaving Marcus Rashford exposed. Nevertheless, Lamine Yamal has sent a positive message to the Culers, while also issuing a clear warning to the Colchoneros ahead the second leg. After the defeat against the Colchoneros, Lamine Yamal sent a message of encouragement to Barcelona, issuing a warning for the second leg. “This isn’t over, Culers. We’ll give everything in the return match. All united, always,” he posted, via Instagram. With this, the Spaniard prepares himself for an anticipated comeback of a two-goal difference at Riyadh Air Metropolitano in the Champions League. Despite not scoring against Atlético Madrid, Lamine dominated on the pitch, being Barcelona’s most decisive player. He not only shone in dribbling but also constantly created space for his teammates. Nevertheless, Marcus Rashford and Dani Olmo were unable to convert all the opportunities generated by the 18-year-old star, cutting off any offensive possibilities. With Pau Cubarsí’s sending off, the Blaugrana lost full control of the game, conceding a free-kick goal from Julián Álvarez. Despite this, they dominated offensively, having more shots on goal and being the brighter team. For this reason, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona could be aiming for a comeback, relying on greater accuracy in front of goal, which could see the Dani Olmo–Fermín López duo deployed again. Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona is tackled by Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid. Lamine Yamal may need to take a scoring role in Barcelona’s offense Throughout the season, Lamine Yamal has proven to be the key axis of Barcelona’s offense. He is not only decisive in dribbling but also opens up space for his teammates. Nevertheless, the Blaugrana are not at their best in scoring, suffering from dips in form from their forwards, as neither Robert Lewandowski nor Ferran Torres are shining. For this reason, the 18-year-old star will need to take on a more goal-oriented role. Needing to overturn a two-goal deficit, the Blaugrana require scoring power more than ever. For this reason, Fermín López and Dani Olmo could take center stage creatively, while Lamine will need to excel in front of goal. As the team’s top scorer, the 18-year-old star has already shown his scoring ability, so he will need to step up at the forefront on this occasion. Frenkie de Jong’s comeback may prove differential for Barcelona Ahead of the first leg in the Champions League quarterfinals, Hansi Flick had to cope with the difficult absence of Frenkie de Jong in midfield. While Eric García emerged as a decent solution, he was unable to shine offensively, limiting the team’s progression. The Dutchman is set to get playing time against Espanyol, creating significant opportunities to start in the second leg against Atlético Madrid. If Frenkie manages to start in the second leg, the Blaugrana would gain consistency in midfield, as well as an ideal partner for playmaking. This would allow Lamine Yamal and Rashford to receive the ball further up the pitch, creating more opportunities to score and push for a comeback. Nevertheless, Fermín López might need to step up, shining once again offensively, breaking Atlético Madrid’s defense.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk up for vast PSG challenge but admits season ‘unacceptable’

‘No one gives us a chance … we have to show the fight’ Champions League first-leg loss was side’s 16th of season Virgil van Dijk has compared the scale of Liverpool’s task against Paris Saint-Germain to Barcelona in 2019 but conceded belief may not be as strong in Arne Slot’s team amid an “unacceptable” season. Liverpool require another remarkable Anfield comeback to salvage their Champions League aspirations after losing the first leg of their quarter-final against PSG 2-0 on Wednesday. The scoreline flattered the Premier League champions, who were outclassed at the Parc des Princes, yet Van Dijk is “100%” convinced the tie can be transformed on home soil. Memories of Barcelona in 2019 fuel the captain’s conviction.

Man City stage incredible comeback at Anfield to keep title race alive

Jimbo has Daniel Storey, Tim Spiers and Reuben Pinder for company after an action-packed Matchday 25 in the Premier League. Man City looked to be crashing out of the title race thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s outrageous free-kick. But late goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland keep the gap to leaders Arsenal at 6 points. What was going on with City’s disallowed 3rd goal? And what’s going on with Liverpool who stay 6th? Man United make it 4 wins out of 4 under Michael Carrick with a 2-0 win against Spurs, for whom Cristian Romero receives the 6th red card of his Tottenham career. It was a great weekend for West Ham at the bottom who beat Burnley while Nottingham Forest were taken apart at Leeds, halving the gap between Forest and the Hammers. Palmer strikes back with a hat-trick at Molineux, Gyokeres is in the goals against Sunderland and could Brentford or Everton qualify for Europe? Another Barca remontada & McTominay still leads the way at Napoli

Jimbo’s joined by Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús, Seb Stafford-Bloor and James Horncastle for your weekly dose of football chatter from across the continent. We begin in Germany, where Bayern Munich got their title defence underway in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig. Harry Kane picked up where he left off last season, scoring a 13-minute hat-trick to take him to a ludicrous 65 goals in 64 Bundesliga games. Not such good news for Erik ten Hag’s Leverkusen though - beaten 2-1 by Hoffenheim at the BayArena. In Ligue 1, despite the chaos off the field Marseille found some unity on it to beat Paris FC 5-2 at the Vélodrome, while PSG recorded another narrow 1-0 win as their underwhelming performances continued. Olivier Giroud stole the headlines with a 91st minute winner for Lille against Monaco - the 350th goal of his professional career! Over in La Liga, there was late drama as Barcelona fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Levante. Meanwhile Real Madrid made it two wins from two themselves in far more comfortable circumstances at newly promoted Real Oviedo. And there were plenty of intriguing scorelines in the first week of Serie A - including Inter’s 5-0 rout of Torino, Max Allegri’s Milan beaten 2-1 by the promoted Cremonense - and KDB kicking off life at Napoli with a goal in their 2-0 victory at Sassuolo - but he'll have to go some way to take Scott's crown...
