93: Player-Driven Culture: Leadership Lessons with Coach Stephen Cavallo

In this episode of Inside College Soccer, Don Williams sits down with Coach Stephen Cavallo, head women’s soccer coach at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, for an in-depth conversation on leadership, culture, and modern player development at the collegiate level. Coach Cavallo shares his philosophy on player ownership and accountability, emphasizing why the most successful teams are those where athletes take responsibility not only for their performance, but for the identity, standards, and culture of the group. He explains how empowering players to lead creates buy-in, resilience, and consistency throughout a long college season. A major focus of the discussion is how to build a player-driven environment. Cavallo outlines practical ways coaches can step back without losing control - allowing leadership to emerge organically while still holding the group to elite expectations. He highlights why this approach better prepares players for the realities of college soccer and life beyond the game. The conversation also dives into the challenges of today’s social media landscape, particularly how constant comparison and external validation can impact athletes’ motivation. Coach Cavallo breaks down the difference between extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation, explaining why players who chase likes, attention, or external praise often struggle with consistency, confidence, and long-term growth. Instead, he stresses the importance of internal standards, daily habits, and purpose-driven development. Throughout the episode, Cavallo connects these themes back to his vision for the UMSL women’s soccer program, discussing leadership, trust, and creating an environment where players grow as competitors, teammates, and people. This episode is a must-listen for: ✅ Aspiring college players navigating pressure and expectations ✅ Parents seeking insight into high-level college environments ✅ Coaches looking to build stronger, more autonomous teams And, as always, there was so much more - from leadership lessons to real-world coaching insight - making this a powerful conversation for anyone invested in the college soccer pathway.

Frank sacked by Spurs - where does this leave the relegation battle?

It's a midweek Totally Extra and Jimbo is joined by Jay Harris, Carl Anka, Liam Twomey & JJ Bull to discuss the midweek fixtures. David Ornstein broke the news this morning that Spurs have sacked Thomas Frank after 8 months in charge. It was no wins in 8 games in the league for Frank's injury-stricken side and the final straw was another home defeat at the hands of Newcastle, with the familiar boos ringing out at full time. Where did it go wrong for the Dane and who will replace him? Relegation-battling Leeds came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against their long time rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Man Utd were also held by relegation scrapping West Ham to deny Carrick's side 5 wins in a row, with Benjamin Sesko rescuing a point late on. Bournemouth made it 6 games unbeaten beating Everton 2-1 with their impressive new Brazilian winger Rayan scoring again. Plus the latest from Leicester and why not everyone wants Hearts to win the Scottish Premiership. Produced by Charlie Jones and Jesse Howard. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1a: Jay Harris joins to talk Frank sacking (2.50) • PART 1b: Spurs 1-2 Newcastle (10.15) • PART 2a: Roundup of the scores (15.40) • PART 2b: Carl Anka joins to talk West Ham 1-1 Man Utd (16.20) • PART 3a: Chelsea 2-2 Leeds (27.35) • PART 3b: Everton 1-2 Bournemouth (36.40) • PART 3c: The latest from Hearts and Leicester (40.00) Hosted on Acast. Mailbag: Has Eddie Howe taken Newcastle as far as he can?

Despite some amazing highs over the last few years - including some apoplectic hangovers for Donaldson - plenty of you have been asking if Newcastle have gone as far as they can under Eddie Howe. So should they move on? Or do they just need to make some alterations elsewhere? Marcus, Pete and Vish get stuck into that and have a right old barney about which teams are having a poor season by their own standards. Plus, in lighter climes: some historically brilliant strikers, former players rolling back the years and Pete unveils the most extreme Newcastle-related bet imaginable. Introverted full-backs, radio commentary synchronicity & the Champions League of trees

Adam Hurrey is joined on the Adjudication Panel by Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker. On the agenda: Steve Bruce adds a crucial syllable to Pep Guardiola's legacy, gloriously synchronised radio commentary at Derby County, an unlikely candidate to be the new David Attenborough, an all-conquering UK tree qualifies for Europe, and a new use for the much-maligned Stockley Park. Meanwhile, the panel pick apart the confused, "common sense"-obsessed discourse in the aftermath of Liverpool 1 Manchester City 2. Manchester City win at Anfield on a Super Sunday that got silly

Apologies for the late show today, but we’re finally here to chat all about another big weekend in the Premier League title race, which saw Manchester City come from behind to win away at Liverpool, for only the second time under Pep Guardiola. After shout outs for the WSL, PSG v Marseille and a few other results (04:21), Musa and Ryan head to Anfield (11:23), which saw another unbelievable free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai give Liverpool the lead, a great comeback and the world being cruelly robbed of one of the silliest goals of the modern era. That meant the gap was the same at the top as before the weekend, following Arsenal’s impressive 3-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday (30:52). Elsewhere, Aston Villa dropped more points, Manchester United may never lose again, Crystal Palace ended their winless streak and Cole Palmer scored another first half hat-trick. In Germany, Bayern and Dortmund teased a title race (48:13) and St. Pauli got a much needed win. Finally, there’s a round-up of La Liga and a bit of chat about Ademola Lookman’s move to Atlético Madrid (53:12). A reminder: Southbank Centre live show! March 1st! With special guest Nish Kumar! Go get your tickets here! For more podcasts, ad-free and in full, plus access to the Stadio Social Club and much more, you can become a Stadio member by signing up at patreon.com/stadio.
