In particular, I like the legs in midfield, though I’m still concerned about where the goals might come from – none of the front three can reliably create for themselves, and there’s a lack of wingers and invention around and behind them. All that said, I’m really looking forward to seeing how Spurs look, having had a couple of weeks to absorb new instructions. I very much doubt De Zerbi leaves things alone for fear of confusing them – I’d expect his instructions to be the pro forma, from now.

For the fourth successive season Villa left the City Ground without the full bounty and they wasted a series of chances to earn victory, Morgan Rogers skying a routine rebound from close range while Ollie Watkins also sent a shot sailing over the bar.

It was a performance built on resilience, clinical finishing, and a decisive second-half spell that ultimately separated the sides. While the late consolation for the hosts denied a clean sheet, the result itself felt far more significant than the final moments might suggest. Early pressure and resilience from the Reds The opening stages were scrappy but intense, typical of a derby encounter with both sides showing urgency without real composure in the final third. Barnsley fashioned the first major opening from a set-piece, while Rotherham responded with chances of their own but failed to capitalise from close range.
