The Preview Show: Transfer Tinder, Mikel Arteta’s “strange” return to Man City and Shaquille O’Neal

It’s not just the Premier League that’s returning next week but also the Premier League narrative. Mikel Arteta is preparing to return to The Etihad to face old boss Pep Guardiola and we are all EXCITED. West Ham are getting ready too, with a massive mosaic. To whom will this mammoth task fall? Is it not vulnerable to mischief making? So many questions need answering. Leagues One and Two have voted to end their season so we have lots to say about that, while also taking in a surprise visit from Shaquille O’Neal and having a lovely chat about Sir Les Ferdinand flirting with Juventus on football’s new dating app. We also have an open top plane update from a listener and Uncle Pete tells us about his camera roll, memories of a particular sideboard and the Dōtonbori river’s sinister Curse of the Colonel. The Blizzard: Barcelona 2-1 Arsenal, 2006

We’re back for some North London heartbreak on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. BBC Sport’s Gavin Ramjuan joins us to discuss Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final! After transitioning out of the Invincibles era, this Arsenal side had become incredibly solid defensively – they only conceded two goals on their route to the final, during which they dispatched Real Madrid and Juventus. They met a Barcelona side that, though it had the early shoots of their infamous Pep Guardiola side, was not up to the same standards. Sol Campbell put the Londoners up with a powerful header but, after Jens Lehmann’s red card and fatigue began to set in, a Henrik Larsson-inspired comeback saw the Catalan side win only their second Champions League trophy. The Blizzard: Juventus 3-1 Real Madrid, 2003

It’s a Football Ramble Daily crossover on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, as we’re joined once again by Andy Brassell! Andy joins Marcus and Jonathan to discuss Juventus’ spectacular 3-1 win over Real Madrid in the 2003 Champions League semi-final. The game was played at the notoriously derided Stadio delle Alpi on the outskirts of Turin. This, however, was different to the usually under-attended matches at Juventus’ ground, as Marcelo Lippi’s side played in front of rapturous home support. We discuss this gripping tie between two European heavyweights featuring the best and worst of Pavel Nedvěd, some questionable Real Madrid defending and an injury-enforced cameo from the great Ronaldo. The Blizzard: Manchester United 3-2 Juventus, 1997

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by football writer and Guardian contributor John Brewin. Here’s here to discuss a scintillating group stage match in the 1997 Champions League: Manchester United 3-2 Juventus. Even as Serie A’s reign as the world’s greatest league was coming to a close, Juventus were still a totemic footballing powerhouse. Sir Alex Ferguson regularly measured his side against his Italian counterparts, but struggled to break through the glass ceiling that English teams typically faced in European competition. Those who performed well domestically were then beaten by cannier, more impressive sides from across the continent- as the first minute of this game typified. However, what followed Del Piero’s first-minute opener was a fantastic response from United, buoyed on by the Old Trafford faithful, as they began to establish themselves as one of Europe’s elite. The Blizzard: Fulham 4-1 Juventus, 2010

Jonathan has to deal with an exceedingly giddy Marcus on today’s episode of Greatest Games, produced in association with The Blizzard. We’re here to discuss the 2009-10 UEFA Cup- specifically Fulham’s spectacular 4-1 win over Juventus on their route to the final, alongside journalist and author Philippe Auclair. Throughout a season that saw Fulham play over 60 games, managed by the underrated Roy Hodgson, there were some truly memorable midweek nights at Craven Cottage- but this was the pinnacle. An admittedly ageing and unspectacular Juventus side brought a 3-1 lead back from Turin but it proved insufficient, as Fulham secured qualification with a fantastic result. Marcus’ giddy aunt, indeed. Fancy getting in touch? Email us at [email protected] or find us social media— just search 'Football Ramble Daily'.
