Liverpool lose, Saints go marching down - and not even KDB can save dour derby

Jimbo's got Matt Davies-Adams, Daniel Storey and Tim Spiers alongside him for a deep-dive into all the weekend's Premier League action. We struggled to stay awake through a thoroughly underwhelming goalless Manchester derby - but at least there's time to talk about Kevin De Bruyne being special. Liverpool's recent struggles continued as they were beaten 3-2 at Fulham with the help of some calamitous defending - is their season at risk ending on a sour note even if/ when they lift the Premier League trophy? Southampton were finally put out of their misery - becoming the first team ever to be relegated from the Premier League with seven games to spare. Elias Burke was at the Tottenham Stadium to see Spurs flatter to deceive again despite their 3-1 win. Wolves are all but mathematically safe and Vítor Pereira's out on the town, Palace v Brighton was ill-disciplined but good fun indeed - and is Mikel Arteta really the hottest manager in the top flight? Bukayo Saka scores on his return for Arsenal but they lose Gabriel and potentially more defenders to injury. How will they cope when Real Madrid visit the Emirates next week? One of the Premier League’s fastest players Anthony Elanga scores the winner for Forest against Man United and it looks like a very exciting end of the season for Villa. Inter remain three points clear at the top of the Serie A table after their 2-1 win over Udinese, while Romelu Lukaku scored the 400th goal of his career in Napoli’s vital victory over struggling Milan to keep the pressure on the leaders. Over in Spain, three points is also the gap between Barcelona and Real Madrid - who both recorded wins with braces from Mbappe and Lewandowski. Plus, Antony’s Betis just can’t stop winning in a fiery Seville derby. PSG continued to romp towards the Ligue 1 title - which is now all but mathematically sealed - with an emphatic 6-1 victory at Saint-Etienne, while Strasbourg are on their best run in six years after their impressive 4-2 win over Lyon. The Timing Game – MH

The Timing Game describes a playing philosophy in which the right moment of an action is crucial. It not only allows pressing traps to be reversed but also enables teams to break down deep defensive blocks with precision. In the Premier League, Brighton’s then-manager Roberto De Zerbi took this tactical approach to a new level. […]

Are Atletico Madrid cursed?

On Wednesday night Atletico Madrid found a new way to suffer Champions League heartbreak at the hands of Real Madrid. Diego Simeone's side were knocked out courtesy of penalties after Julian Alvarez had his effort rule out for a 'two-touch' kick. From VAR, to penalty shootouts, to near misses, Atleti have once again failed to find a way past their neighbours. So why is there always something stopping Simeone’s and his team from getting over the line in this competition? Adam Leventhal is joined by The Athletic's Tomas Hill Lopez-Menchero and Phil Hay to reflect on a chaotic night at the Metropolitano, discuss Atleti's 'El Pupas' curse and analyse how Simeone lifts his side for the La Liga title run-in. Host: Adam Leventhal With: Phil Hay and Tomas Hill Lopez-Menchero Executive Producer: Adey Moorhead Producer: Guy Clarke Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ramble Reacts: Real Madrid somehow find a way (again)

Their best players were pretty flat throughout. England’s rose Conor Gallagher scored after 27 seconds. And they were dragged to a penalty shootout – and yet Real Madrid still found a way to get the job done against Atlético. Best stay out of Diego Simeone’s way… Luke and Pete try to remember anything else from one of the most chaotic, confusing Champions League ties you’ll see. We also celebrate Aston Villa’s cracking win as they march on and the shoddiest performance of the night was reserved for Luke’s Portsmouth. Turgid stuff. We’re going on tour!
