A new £800m setting for the Merseyside derby contained an old and familiar script. Everton came to christen Hill Dickinson Stadium’s derby debut in style but were devastated by the latest Liverpool show of all, as Virgil van Dijk’s 100th-minute header brought victory, relief for Arne Slot and Champions League qualification a little closer. It was some response to a trying week for the Premier League champions. The old guard led the way for Liverpool once more with Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah on the scoresheet, either side of a Beto equaliser, and the visitors refusing to settle for the point that both teams merited. Liverpool tried to exploit Everton’s vulnerability at set pieces all afternoon, mostly without success, but in the 10th of 11 minutes added on it finally paid off. Van Dijk held off James Tarkowski to convert Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner at close range, and Slot’s prospects of leading Liverpool into next season’s Champions League soared.

Liverpool have secured a massive win against Everton courtesy of captain fantastic Virgil van Dijk. The Reds, still battling to secure a top-five finish under Arne Slot, knew anything less than three points would dent their UEFA Champions League hopes. Upwardly-mobile hosts are raising expectations heading into the first showdown against Liverpool at Hill Dickinson Stadium David Moyes extended sympathy and support for Arne Slot – which may not be what any Liverpool manager wishes to hear from an Everton counterpart before a Merseyside derby – yet could not resist the temptation to stir up some local rivalry in the same breath. There was a gleam in the eye and a barely suppressed grin on Moyes’s face as he ridiculed one of the reasons Slot has presented for the champions’ decline this season. “Absolutely,” said the Everton manager when asked whether he sympathised with Slot’s predicament, just 12 months after he was on the verge of winning the Premier League title in his debut season. “Arne Slot has done a brilliant job and, I have got to say, he is really good coach. That is from a neutral point of view.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot found himself in hot water after the final Merseyside derby to ever take place at Goodison Park

There is reportedly some tension brewing inside Anfield amid uncertainty over Arne Slot’s position as Liverpool manager. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by ESPN’s Mark Ogden, The Mail’s Craig Hope and The Mirror’s John Cross to reflect on the weekend’s sporting action. We begin with Man United’s chaotic home win against Chelsea. Craig believes United will always have enough quality to keep bad managers in good jobs. But will this win be a turning point in their season? Next we look at Graham Potter, who’s feeling the pressure as West Ham were booed off, after a loss at home to Crystal Palace. Mark believes Potter tries to play an attractive style of football, but is there any way back for him from here? We also look at the difficult situation at Wolves, and whilst Vitor Pereira is struggling, Craig argues that Wolves have the right man in the role, and losing Cunha and Ait-Nouri was always going to be tough. Elsewhere, we look at Arsenal v Man City; John thinks Liverpool are setting such a relentless standard, that already in the season we have must-win games for the teams looking to challenge. We then move to Liverpool’s Merseyside derby win. Mark highlights Liverpool’s fire power but there’s also a running theme of throwing away leads this season. Finally, The Athletic’s Charlotte Harpur comes on to the pod to talk of the sad news of Liverpool FC Women’s manager Matt Beard’s passing. Charlotte talks of Matt’s legacy both on and off the pitch, including consecutive WSL wins and Matt's empathetic character. Musa and Ryan start with a quick dash around the continent, beginning in Serie A, where José Mourinho obviously saw red as his Roma side grabbed a late win against Monza (03:16). They also discuss Juventus's win at San Siro, another defeat for Union (06:20), wins for the Bundesliga’s top five, and much more. They touch on the passing of the great Sir Bobby Charlton (10:26), widely regarded as one of England’s greatest players, and then head to the Premier League (12:19). There were great goals, handballs, goalkeeping errors, comebacks, and emphatic score lines, including Aston Villa’s 4-1 win over West Ham, Liverpool’s Merseyside derby win (28:44), Arsenal's comeback from 2-0 to draw 2-2 against Chelsea (32:47), Spurs going top, and more. Praying for Ashley Young and James Milner’s hamstrings this morning are Marcus, Luke, Vish and Pete! On today’s show, we look back on the Merseyside derby and wonder how we can access it via Phil Neville’s new VPN next time. Plus, Marcus continues to valiantly nail himself to the Harry Maguire mast, Andy Carroll is full of beef and gravy but still scores from 40 yards out in France, and Birmingham City fall foul of Ramble lore!
