In this episode, Gary Curneen sits down with Joop Oosterveld, transition coach at BK Häcken and former PSV coach, to break down what it actually takes to prepare players for the highest level of the game. We get into why most training environments are too easy, how underloaded pressing (3v7, 4v6) can accelerate development, and why the best players often stop improving if they are not constantly stretched and challenged. Joop shares insights from his time in Holland, Sweden, and learning from environments like Liverpool, giving a clear picture of what elite player development really looks like. This is a must-watch for any coach serious about developing players who can perform at the highest level. A big thank you to Zone 14 for supporting the podcast. First Contact: Ansan's Tim Hartzell & Machop Chol on getting to grips with the K League

Ansan's new faces have brought a mix of international flair and optimism to Ansan following the club's dismal 2025 campaign. It has been a mixed start so far for the Greeners with a first opening win for over half a decade, but poor home form has continued. Nevertheless, Lee Moon-sik's attacking style has brought with it a lot of optimism for the season ahead. So, how have two of those new faces settled to life so far in the K League? Tim Hartzell Hartzell arrives in Ansan off the back of winning the Superettan (Swedish second division) title with Västerås SK. Making 20 appearances, the towering the centre back also showed his goal threat by pitching in some match winning assists as his side clinched the title by a single point. Joining Ansan off the back of such a poor season last year, Hartzell reflects that he saw the results but there have been a lot of changes. In fact it was discussions with coach Choi Moon-sik that set the tone for that was to be expected, with a focussed and exciting plan for the season. Indeed the whole mood around the Wa Stadium seems different this season, with Tim stating there is "a very good mood in the team." Of course arriving in a new country is always a challenge, in particular as Hartzell's career has been spent in Scandinavia. However, the support has been great, especially from Felipe de Paula who works as the team translator at Ansan. Felipe himself has K League 2 experience, scoring 5 times in a stint at Goyang Zaicro in 2017. Tim also notes the role of his agents, as well as the wider Ansan staff in ensuring that the transition to Korea was a smooth one. In addition, Hartzell could also call upon friends in the league itself. Of note, he played with Bucheon midfielder Kazuki Takahashi at Swedish side AFC Eskilstuna. Kazuki assured Tim that he would have a good experience in Korea, offering positive advice with it being “a very good league.” This is echoed by other players and Tim’s own experiences with the K2 so far, noting that it is different from playing in Sweden and Denmark but it is “a high-quality league.” One of the big differences with Scandinavia is the Korean summer, and Hartzell notes that he has heard a lot about it, but he is prepared and even looking forward to it! Of course, the challenge for Ansan in the K2 is a difficult one and Tim reflects pragmatically that the goal is to: “Stay humble and keep working hard.” [READ: Kazuki Takahashi on the 2025 Play-off promotion chase] Tim Hartzell clears the lines against Busan I'Park Machop Chol Born in Khartoum but raised in the US, Machop has played at Wake Forest academy, as did former Greener Burno Lapa, and was picked up for Atlanta United, scoring in the MLS against Toronto and New England. His football journey has also taken him to Lithuania with Zalgiris, and he has been called up 4 times by the South Sudanese team. Machop managed his first goal in front of the home fans against Busan, reflecting that it “It felt good.” Indeed, the humble and pragmatic approach espoused by Hartzell is reflected in Machop who analysed his performance: “[I] Had some opportunities I wish I could have capitalised on but overall, a good feeling, but I just wish we’d have got a result today." His target for the season is to just focus on "helping the team and getting positive results." Following defeat to Busan Machop noted that of course the team is down but “there’s many points to be happy about we played well in certain moments and also got some things that we can learn from as well.” Can Ansan push on this season? Machop thinks so, the team does not like to lose and “there’s a lot of hunger in this group.” [READ: Bruno Lapa on the K League 2] Machop Chol celebrates his first goal for Ansan with the home fans

Are Inter the best team in Serie A? Plus Real v Juve leads midweek action

Jimbo’s got James Horncastle, Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús and Julien Laurens with him as the Euro crew gear up for MD3 in the Champions League. In La Liga, there were 15-second delays and it was the late show once again for Barcelona who had to rely on another stoppage time winner, this time against bottom of the table Girona. Real’s narrow 1-0 win at Getafe sets us up beautifully for Sunday afternoon’s Clásico… It was goals galore in Ligue 1 as Marseille put six past Le Havre, while PSG and Strasbourg played out a 3-3 thriller on Friday night. So how will Luis Enrique’s side fare away at a resurgent Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night? We’re running out of superlatives - and records for Harry Kane to break - after his latest goal in Bayern’s dominant 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund. Plus, what hopes of Eintracht Frankfurt piling more misery on Liverpool when they go toe-to-toe on Wednesday evening? And over in Italy, the title race continues to take turn after turn as Napoli and Juve dropped more points while the two Milan sides took advantage, with Serie A’s top four separated by just one point. Meanwhile, the controversy over the decision to plan Milan v Como in Australia isn’t going away… All that plus (more) sumo chat, Potter’s return to Sweden - and lots of jesting about goals vs clean sheets. Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend - crazy reds and free tickets… (00.45) • PART 2: Champions League MD3 standout fixtures (11.10) • PART 3: La Liga review - Barca leave it late again as Antony’s at the double (20.00) • PART 4: Ligue 1 review - PSG held again while Marseille run riot (31.35) • PART 5: Elsewhere in Europe - Ajax’s struggles and Potter’s back in Sweden! England World Cup-bound + can Man United add to Liverpool’s losing streak?

Jimbo assembles Natalie Gedra, Dom Fifield and Duncan Alexander for another dose of Totally as we gear up for the return of the Premier League - and look back on the midweek international action. England became the first European nation to qualify for the World Cup on Tuesday night after their 5-0 win over Latvia. But what are the key selection headaches that will be troubling Thomas Tuchel? And who's running out of time to secure their place on the plane come next summer? Elsewhere, Sweden have sacked Jon Dahl Tomasson after somehow conspiring to pick up just one point in his four games in charge, leaving their hopes of qualification in a highly perilous position. And it's been a rollercoaster of an international break for Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil - hammering South Korea 5-0 but then handed a 3-2 defeat by Japan in Tokyo which has gone down predictably well back in South America... Then, it's full steam ahead to MD8 in the Premier League. We've got the intrigue of high-flying Palace v Bournemouth, Liverpool looking to end their three-match losing steak against Manchester United, who are on a one-match winning streak of their own - while Ange's increasingly precarious position at Forest faces its next test with Chelsea visiting the City Ground. All that plus Grand Sumo, Arctic Circle sackings - and 'Ndiaye Will Always Love You'. Produced by Charlie Jones and Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1a: Hellos and naming rights (00.45) • PART 1b: World Cup qualifying round up (03.00) • PART 1c: Latvia 0-5 England - Three Lions qualify for WC '26 (05.10) • PART 2a: Big stories elsewhere in qualifying (15.15) • PART 2b: Sweden in a mess (17.55) • PART 2c: Japan beat Brazil (20.30) • PART 3a: Premier League MD8 round up (27.05) • PART 3b: Crystal Palace v Bournemouth preview (28.15) • PART 3c: Liverpool v Manchester United preview (34.30) • PART 3d: Fulham v Arsenal preview (38.30) • PART 3e: Man City v Everton preview (40.10) • PART 4a: Tottenham v Aston Villa preview (42.55) • PART 4b: Forest v Chelsea preview (44.55) • PART 4c: The rest of the Premier League weekend (49.50) Hosted on Acast. Kane rewriting records, Bellingham’s benched - and the end of San Siro?

Seb Stafford-Bloor, Pol Ballús, Julien Laurens and James Horncastle (at the airport!) are alongside Jimbo for your latest dose of intriguing European fare from across the continent. In Serie A, Juventus and Milan played out a goalless draw, allowing Napoli to take advantage and take back top spot after their come from behind 2-1 win over Genoa - courtesy of a late winner from Rasmus Hojlund no less. Over in La Liga, Barcelona were handed their heaviest defeat in over a decade after their shock 4-1 beating at the hands of Sevilla. Real got back to winning ways and back in first position after a Vini brace guided them to a 3-1 win over Villarreal. In Ligue 1, it’s awfully tight at the top after PSG were held to a 1-1 draw by Lille, with an Mbappe on the scoresheet… Marseille, Strasbourg and Lyon all sit just a point behind in what’s shaping up to be an exciting start to the season. And in Germany, you guessed it - Harry Kane’s broken another record! Bayern have won each of their first 10 competitive matches this season, with their number 9 becoming the first player in history to score 11 goals in the first six games of a Bundesliga season. Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend - and pineapple on pizza? (00.35) • PART 2: Serie A review - Draw specialists Juve and trouble for Fiorentina (14.55) • PART 3: La Liga review - Barca’s low point and a repetitive Simeone (28.35) • PART 4: Elsewhere in Portugal, Sweden and the Netherlands… (43.20) • PART 5: Ligue 1 review - PSG drop more points while Hütter’s on the brink (48.35) • PART 6: Bundesliga review - Stop it, Harry! Euro 2012: Spain's Pinnacle in Poland & Ukraine

In this week’s episode, we take an in-depth look at Euro 2012, a tournament fondly remembered as the crowning moment in Spain’s era of dominance, marking their third consecutive major win following Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. Journalists Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper kick things off by delving into the politics behind the decision to host the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, exploring how the host cities managed the logistical challenges and the lasting impact of the event. Jonathan and Rob provide a comprehensive overview of the group stages, highlighting memorable moments such as Danny Welbeck’s back-heeled winner against Sweden. They then move on to iconic knockout stage moments, including Andrea Pirlo’s masterful penalty, Mario Balotelli’s unforgettable performance against Germany and Spain’s utterly dominant 4-0 victory over Italy in the final. But this Sunday's game will first have to see some international players return. And if we're being honest, a couple of them should be getting regular call-ups and playing time, especially for Mexico. On today's show, hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter look at two players who should have a more significant role with El Tri but currently don't. And they look at how that could benefit the Galaxy if it all fell into place. But will Julian Araujo flourish under Tata Martino, or will he continue to ride the bench? And is the pressure getting to him? Have we seen that with both the Galaxy and Mexico? Plus, is Mexico making the same mistake as Jurgen Klinsmann and Sweden? Are they letting their pride keep them from capturing the last competitive breaths of one of their country's greatest goal-scorers? So what does Javier Hernandez need to do with the Galaxy to get Tata's attention? Josh and Kevin will also dive into the Galaxy's demanding schedule, tell you why the Galaxy still don't have a TV deal they've told us about yet, and why there are three or four pretenders above the playoff line in the Western Conference. And the Galaxy might be one of them. We've got a packed show tonight, and we're moving at an unusually quick clip. So buckle up for the return of CoG after a relaxing Thursday off!

Steven Gerrard is on the verge of leaving Rangers to become Aston Villa manager. Is this a bigger gamble for Villa or Gerrard? And does he need the experience at Villa before he can be considered as the next Liverpool manager? Elsewhere, would Lampard fit in at Norwich?
