Jimbo’s back with part 1 of our preview of Euro 2020, in the company of Michael Cox, Tom Williams and Sasha Goryunov. The Three Lions head into essentially a home tournament as favourites. Paul Ince tells us what life inside the camp was like at Euro 96. Are England and Croatia worse than we think they are? And are Scotland and Czech Republic better? Can Wales match their semi-final exploits of 5 years ago, with or without a striker? They’re in the same group as a young Turkey side who we’re very excited about watching. James Horncastle gives us the latest on Roberto Mancini’s Italy, unbeaten in 3 years and finally building the team around their best players. Kristof Terreur explains why Belgium’s golden generation are keen to play down their chances of a first major tournament victory. Plus how Michael incurred the wrath of the Finnish football fans. Dan Bardell welcomes Florence Lloyd-Hughes and David Preece to the show for reaction to England's last warm-up fixture before the belated 2020 European Championships. It was another 1-0 win and it had plenty more in common with the Austria game as Gareth Southgate selected a side featuring mostly fringe squad players, some who won't make the final 26, but at least one who will. James Ward-Prowse will hope to take the spot vacated by Trent Alexander Arnold but Ben White could be a dark horse with Harry Maguire's fitness still a doubt. Jack Grealish has started the last two friendlies, providing dynamism and a cutting edge, and he is fancied by some to make the starting XI against Croatia. Sam Johnstone almost certainly won't feature, but he will be a reassuringly solid third choice between the sticks. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Host Dan Bardell is joined by Flo Lloyd-Hughes & The Athletic’s Carl Anka following a mixed evening for England in their EURO 2020 warm-up game where the big headline was Trent Alexander Arnold hobbling off with an injury that could see him miss the tournament. We hear from The Athletic's England correspondent Jack Pitt Brooke down by The Riverside to get his thoughts on Trent and other matters on the pitch having spoken to England manager Gareth Southgate. Meanwhile did Jack Grealish & Jude Bellingham make strong cases to start at the Euros & are we edging closer to a back three to start at Wembley against Croatia? Hosted on Acast. Well, here we are: Gareth Southgate has settled on his final squad for this summer’s Euros. Kate, Luke and Jim hop on board and set sail for Wembley, with the barge veering right almost immediately. We also look over Carlo Ancelotti’s time at Everton, as The Uncle heads back to Real Madrid seemingly without warning, and we get the lowdown on the two biggest threats to England’s resplendent summer of glory: Croatia and San Marino. It’s a lighthearted show ahead of the return of the men’s domestic seasons, as Musa and Ryan touch on the Nations League between France and Croatia, Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland (4:01) plus Cristiano Ronaldo’s 100th and 101st international goals (11:51). They then dive into talk on the new season’s kits (17:07), plus how the death of the two-year kit cycle has made it hard for fans to form relationships with shirts, resulting in modern kits not being remembered as fondly as those of old (25:38). There’s more big FA WSL signings (33:36), a lot of catfish talk (36:10), and a brief chat about the takeaway from the first six episodes of Spurs’ 'All or Nothing' documentary series (42:28). On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, the New York Times’ Tariq Panja joins us to remember one of the most raucous football atmospheres he’s ever experienced, where his laptop “consistently bounced off the table in the press box for the full 120 minutes.” Tariq, Marcus and Jonathan reminisce about an error-ridden match where Turkey looked certain to go out as the game unfolded and Croatian pressure started to mount. Drama late in extra-time, a chaotic penalty shoot-out and a frantic battle to get to a European Championship semi-final ensured this was truly a game to remember. On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at an absolutely phenomenal match - one that Jonathan describes as potentially his favourite ever game of football. The Athletic’s Rafa Honigstein joins us to represent the other half of this fixture, as Bayern Munich take on Red Star Belgrade in the second leg of the 1991 European Cup semi-finals. Political instability formed an all-encompassing backdrop to this game, with Slovenia and Croatia both declaring independence unilaterally in the months leading up to this game, and it was built up as a momentous footballing occasion. The 1991 European Cup was a tournament both sides were desperate to win; Bayern were obsessed with winning the European Cup again after 1976, and had suffered some traumatic final defeats in subsequent matches, while the Yugoslavian national side had notoriously lost a range of finals in the latter half of the 20th Century. With a home defeat in the first leg, Bayern were praying for a miracle - as we discover, the game more than lived up to this sizeable billing. Fancy getting in touch? Then, the guys breakdown France's controlled victory over Belgium and preview Sunday's Final. Lastly, Rob and Rob are reminded that the Premier League kicks off in less than one month with some breaking news on Chelsea and Antonio Conte!

The semi-final may have been a game too far for England but what a journey it’s been. Gareth the Lionheart’s young team fell short but gave us memories that we’ll cherish forever. Knighthoods for all! We look back over England’s tournament with fondness, surprise and a little bit of curiosity about what could have been. That’s more like it. We also discuss the irrelevances that are the third place play-off and the final. Sorrow, heartbreak, dismay. Three abstract concepts that Croatian fans are definitely not experiencing on Day 23 of the World Cup. It's curtains for England, and the Tifo team gather to discuss the second semi-final & England's performance weighted against an impressive and, ultimately, superior Croatia team. Also: How might Croatia shape up against France? And another word on Raheem Sterling. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Well, here we are in uncharted Football Ramble territory, as England prepare for a World Cup semi-final with Croatia. We steel ourselves for the game by way of adventures with Keith Allen in Screw Fix, reminiscence of tournaments past and the fev-o-meter going into overdrive. Alongside that we look over an impressive, surgical win from France, enjoy a dig from Fabio Capello and learn to ‘drink more responsibility’. Needless to say, Cristiano has the last laugh. And on it goes. England guarantee that they’ll play the maximum amount of games in a World Cup by making the semi-final. It’s one of the most surprising things to happen in the time we’ve been doing the podcast and, frankly, we are giddy. There was another game too, as the mighty England’s opponents need to be decided. Russia bow out having had a memorable tournament in a game full of surprising expectations, excellent goals, ratty goals and misjudged dinks. Even when this World Cup is bad it’s brilliant! We look back on two games that managed to have very little and absolutely loads going on at once as Russia and Croatia send Spain and Denmark home. Elsewhere there’s advice for Pete’s sunburn, yoghurt themed of course, Mexico go for glory, and Antoine Griezmann seems to get mind games badly wrong.
